Four nights in Nagano: which city gets the extra day?

For both Zenkoji and Obuse, spend one night in Matsumoto followed by three in Nagano City. For old school architecture and education displays, spend two nights in Matsumoto, visit Former Kaichi School, then move to Nagano City. Both itineraries end with the prefectural art museum and a return to Nagano Station. Bus costs use the weekday route via Zenkoji Daimon. For a weekend or public-holiday visit, recheck the stops and both bus directions.

Leave from the underground Nagano Electric Railway station and return there

From the Zenkoji Exit side of JR Nagano Station, transfer to the underground Nagano Electric Railway station and take a local train that stops at Obuse. Take the Shinano, then start sightseeing the next day

After a morning visit to Matsumoto City Museum of Art, walk about 12 minutes to the station and take the Limited Express Shinano to Nagano. Use the rest of that day for transportation, a meal, and rest; visit Zenkoji or Obuse the following day.
