Five days in Nagano: which city gets the extra day?

For both Zenkoji and Obuse, stay one Matsumoto night then three in Nagano City. For old-school architecture and education, stay two Matsumoto nights to visit Former Kaichi School before moving to Nagano. Both visit the prefectural art museum on the final day and return to Nagano Station. Bus costs use weekday Zenkoji Daimon stops; recheck stops and return services for weekends and public holidays.

How can I spend a day in Obuse from Nagano?

Stay in Nagano City for a return visit to Hokusai and chestnut sweets in Obuse. This plan separates moving hotels from Matsumoto to Nagano and visiting Obuse.

Leave and return through the underground Dentetsu station

From JR Nagano's Zenkoji exit side, go to the underground Dentetsu station for a local train stopping at Obuse. Allow about 15 minutes from JR including ticket purchase. Walk about 12 minutes to Hokusai-kan; after viewing, lunch and town walks, return from the same station on a Nagano-bound local train. Check the final return and cancellation notes in your date's official station timetable.

Take Shinano, then start sightseeing the next day

After the morning art museum visit, walk about 12 minutes to Matsumoto Station and take Shinano to Nagano. Use today for travel, meals and rest; visit Zenkoji or Obuse the next day. The JPY 3,160 reserved-seat reference was searched on 8 October 2026 for travel on 10/11 October. Select your date's train, fare and seat in the official search.
