Matsumoto Castle and City Museum

Base yourself in Matsumoto for the wooden castle on day one and city-history displays on day two. Choose this for both castle architecture and life in the town.

Day 1: explore Matsumoto Castle's keep and moat

Look at the wooden keep's structure, then walk outside the moat.

  1. Matsumoto Station, Oshiro exit → Matsumoto Castle, Kuromon Gate

Walk about 20 minutes from the eastern Oshiro exit and enter through Kuromon Gate on the south side. The red bridge is not the admission entrance.

  2. Kuromon Gate → Keep and Honmaru enclosure

The keep has narrow, steep stairs. If stairs are difficult, choose the exterior and moat walk instead. Regular hours are 8:30 am to 5 pm, with entry until 4:30 pm. The castle is closed from 29 to 31 December. From 1 to 3 January, it is open from 10 am to 3:30 pm, with entry until 3 pm.

Learn about the city's history and daily life after seeing its castle the day before.

  1. Matsumoto Station, Oshiro exit → Matsumoto City Museum

Walk about 15 minutes from Matsumoto Station to the museum. This plan visits the permanent city-history exhibition rather than climbing the keep again.

  2. Museum entrance → Permanent exhibition

Exhibition rooms are open from 9 am to 5 pm, with ticket sales until 4:30 pm. The museum is closed on Tuesdays, or the next weekday if Tuesday is a public holiday, and from 29 December to 3 January. Check separate ticket coverage if adding a special exhibition.
