One night in Nagano: castle or temple approach?
Spend one night in Matsumoto for the wooden castle keep and city history, or in Nagano City for Zenkoji and art exhibitions. On day two, visit the City Museum or prefectural art museum, then return to the station in the city where you stayed. If you leave in the morning, skip that day's visit and allow time for departure.

Day 1: explore Matsumoto Castle's keep and moat
See the wooden keep's structure, then walk outside the moat after your visit.
- Matsumoto Station Oshiro Exit → Matsumoto Castle Kuromon
Walk about 20 minutes from the station's east Oshiro Exit to the castle, entering through Kuromon on the south side. The red bridge is not the visitor entrance.
- Kuromon → Keep and Honmaru
Narrow, steep stairs connect the keep's interior levels. If stairs are difficult for you, choose the exterior and moat walk instead. General hours are 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m. The castle closes December 29–31. January 1–3 hours are 10:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., with last admission at 3:00 p.m.
- Matsumoto Castle → Matsumoto Station area
After your visit, head back toward the station and have a meal. Allow separately for the keep visit and ticket queue. If arriving late, first check admission hours for your date.
Day 2: explore Matsumoto's history through exhibits
Learn about the city's history and daily life after the previous day's castle visit.
- Matsumoto Station Oshiro Exit → Matsumoto City Museum
Walk about 15 minutes from Matsumoto Station to the City Museum. This option visits the city-history permanent exhibition rather than climbing the castle keep again.
