Where should you stay in Nagano?

Stay near Matsumoto Station for the wooden castle and exhibitions of city history and art, or near Nagano Station for Zenkoji and a trip to Obuse. If you visit both cities, allow time for the JR train and luggage storage on the day you change hotels.

Castle, art museums, or temple approach?

At Matsumoto Castle, explore the wooden keep and moat area. The art museums in the two cities offer works by Yayoi Kusama and Kaii Higashiyama. You can also set aside separate days for Zenkoji's temple approach and the Hokusai-kan Museum in Obuse. Compare stairs and closure dates in the individual attraction guides.

Itineraries by length of stay

One- and two-night options stay in either Matsumoto or Nagano City. Three- and four-night options change hotels between the two cities. Choose around the art or architecture you want to see and your final-day departure time.

2 days, 1 night

Choose one city: Matsumoto for the castle and City Museum, or Nagano for Zenkoji and the prefectural art museum. If you arrive late on day one or leave early on day two, drop one visit and allow time for transportation first.

3 days, 2 nights

Stay in Matsumoto and spread the castle, art museum, and history museum across three days, or stay in Nagano and fit an Obuse day trip between Zenkoji and the prefectural art museum. Neither option changes hotels.

4 days, 3 nights

See Matsumoto's castle and art museum, then move to Nagano City. Choose whether to spend the remaining full day at Zenkoji or viewing Hokusai's art in Obuse. Plan the intercity train and luggage transfer separately.

5 days, 4 nights

Split your stay between Matsumoto and Nagano and include Obuse, or replace Obuse with the old classrooms and architecture of Former Kaichi School. Shorten the final day's visit to fit your departure train.

Where to stay

Matsumoto · 松本

The castle is about a 20-minute walk from the station, with a North Route bus option too. The castle interior has stairs, so choose separately between an exterior walk and entering the keep.

For a hotel within walking distance of the station, compare Matsumoto Tourist Hotel · 松本ツーリストホテル as one example. It is about a 6–7-minute walk from Matsumoto Station and lists front-desk luggage storage before check-in and after checkout. If booking another hotel, your station-to-hotel walk and luggage-storage conditions will differ.

Nagano City · 長野市

Use buses from Nagano Station for Zenkoji and Nagano Dentetsu trains for Obuse. A hotel near Zenkoji's entrance suits an early temple visit, but you must travel back to the station on days taking trains to another city.

Hotel Metropolitan Nagano · ホテルメトロポリタン長野 is directly connected to the station and worth comparing if that connection matters to you. You can leave luggage at the first-floor front desk before check-in and after checkout. The hotel lists the second-floor station walkway as accessible 5:30 a.m.–12:30 a.m.; check the on-site entrance route outside those hours.

Check transportation and visiting dates before departure

Choose the castle, temple, or Hokusai as your trip's focus

Matsumoto Castle · 松本城

Choose separately between entering the wooden keep and exploring the castle surroundings. The keep has steep stairs; if stairs are difficult for you, focus on exterior walks and the City Museum.

Zenkoji Temple · 善光寺 / Hokusai Museum · 北斎館

Zenkoji is in Nagano city, and the Hokusai Museum is in Obuse. Similar museum names in the two cities do not identify the same facility; match your chosen exhibits and hotel base first.

Plan JR transfers and Obuse round trips separately

Use JR between Matsumoto and Nagano, then Nagano Dentetsu between Nagano and Obuse. Allow about 15 minutes, including ticket purchase, to walk from JR Nagano Station to underground Nagano Dentetsu. For Zenkoji and the prefectural art museum, distinguish Alpico bus stops and timetables for weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. Choose a bus back to the station from your last visit and a connecting train together. If departing in the morning, first compare the itinerary with the final day's paid visit removed.

Have Shinshu soba for a meal and chestnut treats in Obuse

Shinshu soba is Nagano's well-known buckwheat noodle dish. On a Matsumoto Castle day, eating between the station and castle can help you fit onward travel; on a Zenkoji day, look along the temple approach. Enjoy Obuse chestnut sweets and snacks after a meal, and choose lunch separately. Check each shop's opening days, menu, and reservation terms. Add meals to the itinerary's admission and transportation total.

Use cameras for exterior views

The Matsumoto Castle camera looks from City Hall toward the castle exterior and Northern Alps. It does not show inside the keep or the full Kuromon queue. Zenkoji's Sanmon camera alternates toward the main hall and Nakamise; it does not show the indoor worship space. Whether or not a camera plays, check official facility information for hours and admission availability.

Zenkoji approach snacks and Obuse chestnut sweets

Look for local snacks such as oyaki on Zenkoji's Nakamise street. Obuse is known for chestnut sweets, which you can add to your museum day as a snack rather than a lunch replacement. Opening days and last-order times vary by shop.
