Where should you spend time: castle, art or temple approach?

Explore Matsumoto Castle’s wooden keep and moat, or Yayoi Kusama and Higashiyama Kaii works in the two cities’ art museums. Give Zenkoji’s approach and Obuse’s Hokusai Museum separate days too. Compare stairs and closure dates in each attraction guide.

Itineraries by trip length

Two- and three-day options stay in either Matsumoto or Nagano. From four days, change hotels between the cities. Choose according to the art and architecture you want to see and your final departure time.

1 night, 2 days

Choose one city: Matsumoto for the castle and City Museum, or Nagano for Zenkoji and the prefectural art museum. For late arrival or early second-day departure, omit one visit and prioritise travel time.

2 nights, 3 days

Stay in Matsumoto for separate castle, art and history days, or stay in Nagano with an Obuse day between temple and art. Neither option changes hotels.

3 nights, 4 days

Visit Matsumoto’s castle and art museum before moving to Nagano. Choose Zenkoji worship or Hokusai’s works in Obuse for the remaining day. Plan intercity trains and luggage separately.

4 nights, 5 days

Divide nights between Matsumoto and Nagano and add Obuse, or replace Obuse with Former Kaichi School’s classrooms and architecture. Shorten final-day visits to fit your return train.

Where should you stay?

Matsumoto · 松本

The castle is about a 20-minute walk from the station, with a North Route bus alternative. Choose a walk around the castle exterior or a keep visit according to whether you can use the stairs.

For a hotel within walking distance of the station, compare Matsumoto Tourist Hotel · 松本ツーリストホテル as one option. It is about six to seven minutes from the station and offers reception luggage storage before check-in and after check-out. Your actual hotel may have different walking directions and storage conditions.

Nagano City · 長野市

Use buses from Nagano Station for Zenkoji and Nagano Electric Railway for Obuse. A hotel near Zenkoji’s entrance suits early worship, but requires a return journey to the station when travelling to another city.

Compare Hotel Metropolitan Nagano · ホテルメトロポリタン長野 if a direct station connection matters. Luggage storage is available at the first-floor reception before check-in and after check-out. The hotel lists the second-floor station passage as open 05:30–24:30; check the available entrance outside those hours.

Check transport and visiting dates before departure

Choose castle visits, worship or Hokusai as your main interest

Matsumoto Castle · 松本城

Choose the wooden keep interior or a walk around the castle. The keep has steep stairs; if these are difficult, focus on the exterior and City Museum.

Zenkoji Temple · 善光寺 / Hokusai Museum · 北斎館

Zenkoji is in Nagano City and the Hokusai Museum in Obuse. Similarly named art museums in the two cities are separate facilities; match your preferred exhibitions with your accommodation base first.

Plan JR transfers and the Obuse return separately

Use JR for Matsumoto–Nagano and Nagano Electric Railway for Nagano–Obuse. Allow about 15 minutes from JR Nagano to the underground railway station, including ticket purchase. For Zenkoji/art museum, distinguish Alpico stops and weekday/weekend/public-holiday timetables. Choose the bus back from your final visit and the onward train together. For a morning departure, first compare omitting the final paid visit.

Have Shinshu soba for a meal and choose chestnut snacks in Obuse

Shinshu soba is a local buckwheat noodle dish. On castle days, eat between the station and castle; on Zenkoji days, choose the temple approach to fit onward travel. Enjoy Obuse chestnut sweets after a meal and choose a separate lunch place. Check restaurant opening dates, menus and reservation conditions; budget meals beyond the admission/transport subtotals.

Use cameras for exterior views

Matsumoto Castle’s camera looks from City Hall towards the exterior and Northern Alps. It does not show the keep interior or complete Kuromon queue. Zenkoji’s Sanmon camera alternates main-hall and Nakamise views, without showing interior worship. Check facility guidance for hours and admission, whether or not the camera plays.
