Three days in Nagano: where should you spend the middle day?

Two Matsumoto nights allow one day each for castle, art museum and City Museum. For Hokusai and a town walk, stay in Nagano City and spend the middle day in Obuse. On either itinerary, stay at the same hotel throughout and return to that city’s station after your final visit.

Matsumoto Castle, City Museum of Art and City Museum

Give the castle, art museum and City Museum a day each in Matsumoto. Spend separate days on wooden architecture, artworks and city history.

Examine the wooden keep’s structure, then walk outside the moat after your visit.

  1. Matsumoto Station Oshiro Exit → Matsumoto Castle Kuromon Gate

Walk about 20 minutes from the east-side Oshiro Exit and enter through the southern Kuromon Gate. The red bridge is not the visitor entrance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change straight from a JR platform to the Obuse train?

Nagano Electric Railway departs from a separate underground station. From JR’s second-floor gates, head towards Zenkoji Exit/MIDORI, take the right-hand escalator down and outside at ground level, then descend underground and turn left to the railway station. The operator advises about 15 minutes including ticket purchase. Allow this transfer between JR arrival and railway departure.
