How can you spend a day in Obuse from Nagano?
Stay in Nagano City for an Obuse return trip with Hokusai’s works and chestnut sweets. Separate Obuse from the day you change hotels from Matsumoto to Nagano.
Leave and return via the underground railway station
From JR Nagano’s Zenkoji Exit side, transfer underground for a local train stopping at Obuse. Allow about 15 minutes from JR, including tickets. Walk about 12 minutes to Hokusai Museum; after exhibits, lunch and a town walk, return from Obuse Station on a Nagano-bound local. Should you move from Matsumoto to Nagano for one or more nights?
After visiting Matsumoto’s castle and art museum, change hotels to Nagano for Zenkoji and Obuse. Choose one Matsumoto night and three Nagano nights for both, or two nights in each city to add Former Kaichi School and omit Obuse.
Transfer by Shinano and start visits the next day
After the morning art museum visit, walk about 12 minutes to Matsumoto Station and take Shinano to Nagano. Use that day for travel, meals and rest, leaving Zenkoji or Obuse until tomorrow.
