Where should I stay and what should I see in Niigata?
Stay near Niigata Station for Bandai riverside walks and aquarium or deck visits. Choose Marinepia for marine life, or deck/Pia Bandai for city views and market lunch. Continue by rail to Yahiko for shrine worship, or ferry to Sado for mine tunnels.
What would you like to see in Niigata?
Walk beside the river for views of Bandai Bridge’s six arches. Observe marine life at Marinepia or see the city from above at the deck. Choose Pia Bandai lunch afterwards, or explore an old residence and garden at Former Saito Villa. Yahiko shrine approaches need a rail transfer; Sado mine tunnels need ferry and island buses.
Itineraries by trip length
Choose river and aquarium/deck for short city trips, giving Yahiko a separate rail day if adding it. Sado courses separate crossing day, island sightseeing and Niigata return. Accommodation, food and long-distance travel are outside subtotals.
2 days / 1 night
Stay one Niigata night with Day 1 river walks. Choose aquarium exhibits or free deck/port market on Day 2, then return by bus to the station.
3 days / 2 nights
Two Niigata nights give Yahiko and aquarium a day each. For Sado, choose one night each in Niigata and Ryotsu; this course excludes the mine.
4 days / 3 nights
Stay three Niigata nights for separate Yahiko, aquarium and deck days. For the mine, choose one Niigata night and two Ryotsu nights, separating mine day from ferry return.
5 days / 4 nights
Four Niigata nights add Former Saito Villa. For both aquarium and mine, choose two nights each in Niigata and Ryotsu. Check island buses and ferry returns together.
Where to stay
Around Niigata Station
A station-area base is convenient for Yahiko rail trips or a short city visit. Sado ferries leave Niigata Port, so take a bus from the station to the port.
Bus operator fares and timetablesHotel access and station-area map
Bandai and Furumachi
Consider Bandai or Furumachi for riverside walks and city dining. Walking distance to the station and bus stops depends on your hotel address.
Ryotsu, Sado
Stay in Ryotsu to rest near the port after arriving by ferry. For a next-day mine visit, check the route from your hotel to the island bus departure point.
Aikawa, Sado
Consider Aikawa accommodation if the mine is your main island visit. Travel there by bus from Ryotsu Port; hotel pickup has separate conditions.

Choose travel-date returns in JR, bus and ferry timetables below. Yahiko needs a Yoshida transfer; Sado needs ferry, port buses and island buses coordinated. Keep weekday/weekend and validity-period timetables separate. Ferry fare validity is listed in course costs. Yahiko JR fares are outside subtotals.

Stay in Niigata city for river scenery and market dining. Shrine approach paths require a Yahiko trip; mine tunnels require Sado. Yahiko rail transfers and Sado ferries are easier to coordinate as separate days from city sightseeing.
Arrival day: station to Bandai riverside
Bandai Bridge · 萬代橋
Walk from Niigata Station via Media Ship and Bandai City to the bridge. Yasuragitei is the riverside path. For late arrival, walk only the bridge/nearby river, then eat dinner near the station. The course passes Media Ship towards the river rather than visiting indoors.

Where do I board at Niigata Station?
Aquarium, deck and Sado port buses use different stands. Check destination names and return stops together.
Aquarium: C22 from stand 9
Take aquarium-bound C22 from stand 9 to the aquarium stop, returning on a Niigata-bound bus. The sightseeing loop has a different direction/timetable from regular services; choose it separately rather than using the same return calculations.

Deck/market: Toki Messe from stand 17
Take a Toki Messe/Sado Kisen bus from stand 17. Visit the deck at Toki Messe, then walk to the market. Return from the regular Niigata-bound Pia Bandai-mae stop, distinct from sightseeing-loop stops.

Sado: Niigata Station, Niigata Port, then Ryotsu

What should I eat in Niigata?
Choose station, Bandai or Furumachi restaurants after river walks, or Pia Bandai lunch on deck day. Check market shop hours and leave time for the return bus.
Hegi soba: buckwheat noodles with seaweed
Hegi soba is Niigata buckwheat noodles with funori seaweed in the dough. Look for it on menus for a noodle meal; accompaniments, portions and prices vary.
Wappa meshi: rice with seafood
Wappa meshi combines broth-cooked rice and seasonal seafood in a wooden bowl. Choose it for rice and seafood together. Not every Pia Bandai shop sells it; check your chosen menu.

Can JR TOKYO Wide Pass reach Niigata city?
Coverage in Niigata Prefecture does not mean coverage to Niigata Station. Check Joetsu Shinkansen coverage only as far as Echigo-Yuzawa. For Niigata city, compare uncovered rail sections and Sado ferry/bus costs separately. Check seasonal GALA notices if visiting. Port buses, Sado Kisen, island buses and admission are also extra.
