Shiga travel: which side of Lake Biwa should I stay on?

What would you like to explore?

Choose Hikone Castle for the keep and garden, or Ishiyamadera to explore temple grounds and worship. Follow old streets beside the canal at Hachiman-bori. For indoor exhibitions on a rainy day, take a bus from Kusatsu to Lake Biwa Museum.

Itineraries by trip length

Compare the one-night Hikone course for the keep, garden and castle museum with the one-night Kusatsu course for Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum. For Hachiman-bori’s canal and old streets too, choose a two-night Hikone course. Check visiting order and returns to accommodation in each course.

2 days / 1 night

Stay in Hikone for the castle and garden one day and castle museum the next, or stay in Kusatsu for separate days at Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum. Reduce visits if arriving late or departing early.

3 days / 2 nights

Stay in Hikone for the castle and Hachiman-bori, or in Kusatsu for Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum. On the last day, take a short walk near your hotel only if time remains before your train.

4 days / 3 nights

From Kusatsu, take separate day trips to Ishiyamadera, Lake Biwa Museum and Hikone Castle. Alternatively, stay in Hikone and give the castle, castle museum and Hachiman-bori separate days.

5 days / 4 nights

Give each of the four attractions a day from the same Kusatsu hotel, or spend two nights in Hikone followed by two in Kusatsu. On the moving day, allow time to reach the museum and explore before its admission deadline.

Accommodation bases

Ishiyama Station

Otsu · 大津 (Shiga Prefecture · 滋賀県)

Look near Ishiyama Station if Ishiyamadera is your main visit. Temple buses depart from stand 1. For Lake Biwa Museum too, take JR to Kusatsu and change to a museum bus. The temple and museum buses depart from different stations.

Kusatsu Station

Kusatsu · 草津

Choose a base near Kusatsu Station if you want to visit the museum first, or give the southern temple and eastern castle and canal separate days. Museum buses depart from west-exit stand 2. Take JR to other stations for Ishiyamadera, Hikone Castle and Hachiman-bori. Even with a hotel near the station, check its address for walking time to the bus stand.

Omihachiman Station

Omihachiman · 近江八幡

For more time around Hachiman-bori, distinguish accommodation near the station from accommodation by the canal. Canal buses depart from north-exit stands 6 and 7. If visiting Hikone Castle too, check outward and return JR trains between Omihachiman and Hikone alongside your return bus.

Hikone Station

Hikone · 彦根

Look near Hikone Station for time at the castle, Genkyuen Garden and castle museum. Official guidance gives a walk of about 15 minutes from the station to the castle and museum. Allow extra time for ticket queues, slopes and stone steps up to the keep. Castle and museum opening times differ; a Hachiman-bori day trip adds return JR and bus travel.

Will you see Hikone Castle and museum on the same day?

Adult castle and Genkyuen admission costs 1,000 yen; individual museum admission costs 700 yen. For both on the same day, check the 1,500-yen combined ticket and exhibition arrangements. Courses on different dates use 1,000 plus 700 yen. Avoid trying to squeeze the keep, garden and museum into a short gap before departure.

Hachiman-bori walks and cruises are separate choices

From Omihachiman north-exit stand 6 or 7, take a service stopping at Hachiman-bori. Adult return buses cost 520 yen and the canal is directly accessible on foot from the stop. The basic itinerary explores the canal and old streets on foot; cruises are optional extras. For a boat trip, check the operator’s boarding point, times and fares first.

Give another city a day and return to the same hotel

For Hikone Castle from Kusatsu, take JR towards Maibara. For Hachiman-bori from Hikone, take a Kyoto-bound JR service to Omihachiman, then the canal bus. Return JR services run towards Kyoto stopping at Kusatsu, or towards Maibara or Nagahama stopping at Hikone respectively. You can use ordinary JR tickets. Before comparing a WEST QR Kansai Area Pass, check coverage and ordinary fares for the sections you will use. Temple, canal and museum buses and admission are calculated separately from JR in course costs. The pass lasts one to four consecutive days, so one pass does not cover a full four-night, five-day trip.

Where should I walk after visiting an attraction?

Choose the Hikone Castle area, Hachiman-bori’s old streets or a park near Kusatsu Station. These are in different cities; combine a walk with that day’s attraction rather than linking all of them in one day.

Yumekyobashi Castle Road below Hikone Castle

Yumekyobashi Castle Road · 夢京橋キャッスルロード is a shopping street near Kyobashi Bridge over the castle moat, about 20 minutes on foot from Hikone Station according to the access guidance. Visit its confectionery shops and restaurants after descending from the castle, or take a short walk before departure. Each shop has its own closure dates and hours.

Hachiman-bori and Shinmachi Street

Shinmachi Street · 新町通り

Old Omi merchants’ homes and shops remain along Shinmachi Street. Use the official walking map to choose an area alongside your Hachiman-bori walk. Walking the canal and taking a cruise are different plans. Check hours and fees separately for additional cruises or local museum visits.

Deai Hiroba · de愛ひろば lies in section 5 of the park on the former Kusatsu River course, about six minutes on foot from Kusatsu Station. Which direction should I take after leaving JR?

Use JR between cities, then walk or take a local bus from station to attraction. Representative facility pins are navigation references; they do not indicate ticket offices or entrances.

From Hikone Station to castle and museum

What should I eat in Shiga?

Consider Omi beef for a beef meal, or red konnyaku and funazushi for local specialities. Choose a dish and city first, then check each shop’s menu, prices and hours.

Omi beef

Omi beef · 近江牛 appears in rice bowls, beef stew and other dishes. For a meal in Hikone after the castle, compare menus in Yumekyobashi Castle Road’s shop list. Meals are excluded from course admission and bus subtotals.

Red konnyaku

Red konnyaku · 赤こんにゃく is a well-known Omihachiman speciality. Its colour comes from iron oxide rather than chilli. It may be served with vinegared miso or wasabi soy sauce. Check the preparation on each menu rather than assuming the red colour means it is spicy.

Ministry of Agriculture: red konnyaku

Funazushi

Funazushi · ふなずし preserves Lake Biwa crucian carp by fermenting it with rice. It differs from ordinary sushi with fish on rice. Look for it if you want fermented food; for a first taste, ask about serving quantities and how to eat it. Not every restaurant sells it, so check menus before visiting.

Ishiyamadera buses leave JR Ishiyama stand 1; museum buses leave Kusatsu west-exit stand 2. To visit both, travel between Ishiyama and Kusatsu by JR.

Official bus informationMuseum access

Can I put Hikone Castle and Ishiyamadera on the same day?

Travel from Hikone Castle to Ishiyamadera requires JR followed by a temple bus. Separate days give each facility more visiting time. For one night, choose Hikone Castle and its museum, or give Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum a day each. Shorten day-one visits if arriving late, and change the order for museum closures. For both on one day, check return JR and bus times and both facilities’ admission deadlines first.

Do these courses go all the way around Lake Biwa?

All eight courses choose among Ishiyamadera, Lake Biwa Museum, Hikone Castle and Hachiman-bori to the south and east of Lake Biwa. They do not form a circuit through the north and west. Choose attractions and a base first, then compare trip lengths. The northern Waterfowl and Wetland Center camera is a separate scenery reference, outside the basic itineraries.
