Where should you stay in Shimane: Matsue or Izumo?

Choose the JR Matsue Station area for the castle, exhibitions and Adachi Museum, or the Izumoshi Station area for the shrine and beach. For both cities, first decide whether to return to one hotel or stay in Izumo; this makes the number of journeys easier to compare.

Start with the places you want to visit in Shimane

Choose Matsue Castle and lakeside exhibitions, Adachi gardens in Yasugi, or Izumo’s shrine and beach. For a boat trip through the castle waterways, see the attraction guide for Horikawa piers and operating conditions.

Itineraries by trip length

Choose between Matsue Castle’s keep and lakeside art, or Izumo Taisha worship and a beach walk. For gardens and Japanese paintings, consider a course visiting Adachi Museum in Yasugi. Compare staying in Matsue throughout with moving to Izumo.

2 days / 1 night

Stay one night in Matsue for separate castle and lakeside-art days, or in Izumo for separate shrine and beach days. Day 2 of the Matsue course uses a return walk from the station to the museum. Reduce sightseeing for a late arrival or early final-day departure.

3 days / 2 nights

For an art-focused trip, stay two Matsue nights and visit Yasugi. For shrine and beach visits, consider moving to Izumo on Day 2. The courses finish at different stations. Reach Adachi via the Yasugi shuttle and collect your numbered return tickets before viewing the museum.

4 days / 3 nights

Stay two Matsue nights and one Izumo night to give the shrine and beach separate days. For gardens and Japanese paintings, visit Adachi in Yasugi on Day 2, allowing time for return JR and shuttle rides. For collections without leaving Matsue, choose Shimane Art Museum and walk there and back from the station.

5 days / 4 nights

To keep one hotel, stay four Matsue nights and make separate trips to Yasugi and Izumo. To spread shrine and beach visits across two days, you can start with two Izumo nights before moving to Matsue.

Where to stay

Hotel bases and sightseeing areas

Matsue, Yasugi and Izumo are in eastern Shimane. Adachi is in Yasugi City, not central Matsue. Take JR to Yasugi, then a shuttle or local bus. Iwami Ginzan and the Oki Islands are outside these eastern routes.

Choose your hotel, arrival station and departure station

Staying near Matsue Station makes it easy to give the castle, exhibitions and Yasugi day trips separate days. Routes spending two days on shrine and beach stay near Izumoshi Station. Matsue Shinjiko Onsen is separate from JR Matsue, so staying there adds travel to JR. Choose your base around intercity moves and final departure station.

Prepare transport, meals and visiting dates

Compare transport for your departure station

The one-night Matsue route totals castle, two Lakeline rides and optional collections. The one-night Izumo total varies with Aeon Mall bus rides from Izumoshi. Matsue–Izumoshi/Yasugi JR, accommodation, meals and airport travel are outside both partial totals.

Choose Matsue–Yasugi/Izumoshi JR dates and compare Tottori-Matsue Pass coverage. Adults pay 4,000 yen for three consecutive days, including Matsue Lakeline. Buyers need both a passport issued by a government other than Japan and Temporary Visitor status. Present the passport on collection. Japanese nationals cannot use it. Do not compare Matsue’s admission/standard-bus subtotal directly with the pass; deduct duplicate Lakeline spending if already using it. Ichibata Railway, Aeon-route shrine buses and admission are not counted as covered. Adachi’s free shuttle is separate from JR-pass benefits.

For Adachi, connect Yasugi-bound JR with return shuttles. Moving to Izumo, choose shrine buses separately after Izumoshi arrival. Distinguish Ichibata from Matsue Shinjiko Onsen and JR trains from Matsue Station.

Places to give separate days in Shimane

Choose an area below, allowing for travel between cities and each attraction’s access rather than treating them as one neighbourhood walk.

Matsue Station, castle and Lake Shinji

Reach the castle keep and History Museum by Lakeline; walk from JR Matsue to the lakeside prefectural art museum. Giving the castle and collections separate days lets you switch their order around Tuesday closures.

Matsue–Izumoshi/Yasugi JR, accommodation, meals and airport travel are outside both one-night partial totals.

Matsue Castle keep and lakeside art: 1,700–2,100 yen

Castle 1,200 yen + Lakeline 250 × 2 + prefectural art collections 400. Total 2,100 yen with the indoor collections visit, or 1,700 if omitting it for a closure or other reason. Walk between station and museum; no extra bus is budgeted. Special exhibitions, accommodation, meals, airport travel and unlisted transport/activities are extra.

Frequently asked questions

Are Matsue Shinjiko Onsen and JR Matsue the same station?

They are separate stations. JR trains to Yasugi and Izumoshi depart from JR Matsue, as does Lakeline for Matsue Castle. For Ichibata Railway towards Izumo, distinguish departures from Matsue Shinjiko Onsen and check the journey from your hotel to that station.
