Tochigi travel: how should I divide temples, gyoza and lakeside time?

Choose the Nikko station area for more time with temple architecture, or west of Utsunomiya Station for the underground quarry and gyoza. For waterfall and villa visits on separate days, compare a Lake Chuzenji stay. Mountain-road buses and accommodation moves take time, so these courses spread the two cities and lake across different days.

Choose temples, underground quarry or lakeside visits

Nikko’s Toshogu and Rinnoji, Utsunomiya’s Oya History Museum, and Lake Chuzenji’s Kegon Falls and embassy villas involve different visits and travel. Compare fees, entrances and seasonal hours in the attraction guides first.

Itineraries by day

First choose Toshogu and Rinnoji architecture, Oya’s underground quarry with Utsunomiya gyoza, or a Lake Chuzenji night. Compare trip lengths from Nikko or Utsunomiya day trips to lakeside stays. Some courses have different departure and return stations, such as Tokyo Station outward and Asakusa on return.

2 days / 1 night

Stay one night in Nikko to give Toshogu and Rinnoji separate days, or one night in Utsunomiya for the underground quarry and gyoza. The Nikko course travels from and back to Asakusa; the Utsunomiya course uses Tokyo Station.

3 days / 2 nights

Course A stays two nights in Nikko, with the middle day at the waterfall and lake. B stays consecutive nights in Utsunomiya, visiting Oya History Museum and Nikko temples on separate days. Neither changes accommodation.

4 days / 3 nights

A adds one lake night after two Nikko nights, visiting the British villa on the last day. B combines one Utsunomiya night and two Nikko nights for Oya, gyoza and a lake day trip. B departs from Tokyo Station and returns to Asakusa.

5 days / 4 nights

A stays two nights in Utsunomiya, one in Nikko and one by the lake, visiting the underground quarry and both villas. B has two Nikko nights and two lake nights, with villas and natural science museum on separate days. A’s three-site temple day involves considerable walking.

Coordinate your return train with the bus after sightseeing

For an Asakusa return trip, use Tobu limited expresses. From Tokyo or Utsunomiya, use JR local trains and the Nikko Line. JR Nikko and Tobu-Nikko are different stations. Three-night B and four-night A depart from Tokyo Station and return to Asakusa.

On lake-descent days, board a station-bound bus at Chuzenji-onsen terminal. Checked stand 26B differs from Yumoto-bound 26A. Allow for sightseeing delays and mountain-road traffic, then leave a margin after reaching Tobu-Nikko before your return limited express. Check buses, trains and seats for your date in official searches.

Bus-pass dates differ between courses

One-night A uses a new World Heritage one-day pass on each of days one and two. One-night B uses an Oya sightseeing one-day pass only on day one. Two-night A uses World Heritage on day one and Chuzenji-onsen two-day on days two and three, without double-counting Sannai bus passes. Two-night B uses Oya on day one and World Heritage on day two.

Three-night A uses a World Heritage pass on each of the first two days and Chuzenji-onsen two-day on days three and four. Three-night B uses Oya on day one and Chuzenji-onsen on days three and four. Four-night A uses Oya on day two, World Heritage on day three and Chuzenji-onsen on days four and five. Four-night B uses World Heritage on each of the first two days and ordinary single fares for the lake buses on days three and five. Returning after two lakeside nights is outside one two-day pass’s validity.

World Heritage costs 600 yen per adult for one day; Chuzenji-onsen costs 2,300 yen for two days. The 2,200-yen Oya pass includes museum admission; do not add another 1,000 yen. Check sales conditions and covered sections for your new travel dates.

NIKKO PASS is for overseas visitors; accompanying Japanese nationals can also buy it. The world heritage pass is valid for two days and ALL AREA for four; both exclude limited express supplements and shrine and temple admission. The world heritage pass alone does not include Lake Chuzenji buses. One four-day pass cannot cover both Asakusa departure and the final return of a four-night, five-day course.

JR sections from Utsunomiya and Kanto Bus services to Oya differ from the Tobu pass’s Asakusa return section. These budgets use ordinary tickets and course-specific bus passes. They do not calculate pass savings or provide a purchase quotation.

The JR TOKYO Wide Pass is valid for three consecutive days from your selected start date. Adults pay 16,000 yen and need an original passport issued outside Japan; the Temporary Visitor condition does not apply. Compare JR routes between Tokyo, Utsunomiya and Nikko and covered dates, but this course’s Tobu-Nikko–Asakusa standalone limited express and Oya and lake buses are excluded.
