Three nights in Wakayama: stay on the mountain or allow more waterfall time?

For separate temple days and Wakayama Castle too, stay two nights on Koyasan and a final night in Wakayama City. For late arrival in Kii-Katsuura and a weather spare day for Nachi Falls, compare three nights in the same hotel. Consider a shorter stay if you can visit on arrival and do not need the spare day.

Two nights on Koyasan, then Wakayama Castle before departure

Choose this course for more temple time on Koyasan and Wakayama Castle afterwards. Stay two nights on Koyasan for separate Kongobuji and Danjo Garan days, then descend to Wakayama City on day three for one night.

Day 1: ascend Koyasan and visit Kongobuji

Take a mountain bus from Koyasan Station to Kongobuji, then stay on Koyasan. Choose your departure to allow time before the temple closes, using the bus and cable-car connections for your date. Check your accommodation’s guidance for access and meal times.

  1. Nankai Hashimoto → Gokurakubashi

From Nankai Hashimoto, take a local Koya Line service towards Gokurakubashi. Check the weekday or weekend and public-holiday timetable for your date alongside the connecting cable car. Travel from your starting city to Hashimoto is separate. Ordinary tickets do not include reserved-seat or limited-express supplements.

  2. Gokurakubashi → Cable car to Koyasan Station

Leave the train and change to the Koyasan cable car. Use the weekday or weekend and public-holiday timetable for your date to choose a departure allowing time after train arrival. Beyond Koyasan Station, a mountain bus is still needed for temples or accommodation.

  3. Koyasan-ekimae → Kongobuji-mae stop

From Koyasan-ekimae, take a mountain bus stopping at Kongobuji-mae and alight there. The official fare table gives 460 yen per adult for this section on routes 21, 31, 41, 42, 43, 52, 53 and 55. Route 44 via Daimon-Minami-Chushajo has a different stop order. Check the destinations and the weekday or weekend and public-holiday timetable at the station-front stop. Choose a bus that leaves time to visit before temple reception closes at 16:30. If visiting your hotel first, check its stop separately.

Stay in Kii-Katsuura for Nachi Falls

Choose this course if you arrive late on day one and want a spare day to move your waterfall visit if the weather is poor. Stay three nights in the same Kii-Katsuura accommodation, with separate days for arrival, the waterfall and a spare day or rest. Consider a shorter stay if you have a full visiting day on arrival and do not need the spare day.

Day 1: arrive at the station and reach accommodation

This plan allows for late arrival on day one. Go to your accommodation, eat and rest, then visit the waterfall the next day. It does not assume a full sightseeing day on arrival.

  1. JR Kii-Katsuura Station → Booked accommodation entrance

Look up trains from your starting city to JR Kii-Katsuura for your date. After arrival, follow your actual hotel’s access guidance. Today you stay in Kii-Katsuura without continuing on a Nachisan Line bus.

Day 2: Nachi Falls

The basic return visit is to the free worship area with waterfall views. Add the paid viewpoint only after confirming reception on the day.

  1. Kii-Katsuura Station → Nachi-no-Taki-mae

Prepare a Nachi Area World Heritage Free Ticket valid that day, costing 1,260 yen per adult, then take Nachisan-bound route 31 from the station. The station-front paper-ticket counter opens 08:00–10:30 and 11:30–17:00, closing 10:30–11:30. Digital tickets are sold in the 乗換案内 app. Choose a service stopping in front of the waterfall. 2. Nachi-no-Taki-mae → Hiro Shrine ordinary worship and waterfall views

From the stop, follow Hiro Shrine’s torii and stone steps to the ordinary worship area. Nachikatsuura tourism guidance lists free ordinary worship 07:00–16:30. Check steps and local access restrictions and leave time for your return bus. The paid Otaki viewpoint is optional; the shrine operator gives adult admission of 500 yen. Its roughly three-minute one-way reception-to-viewpoint walk does not cover the full walk from the bus stop. If same-day viewpoint reception times cannot be confirmed, use ordinary worship only. The basic itinerary excludes the longer Daimonzaka walk.

You can return earlier after ordinary worship based on lunch, rest and actual bus services. The Nachi ticket is a day ticket covering departure and return from Kii-Katsuura, with unlimited travel in the Nachi Station–Nachisan section. Return to the same accommodation, eat dinner and stay a second night.

Day 3: spare day for the waterfall, or the market and a rest

If you missed the waterfall, check weather, access restrictions and bus services and move day two’s visit here. Check that buses and facility reception have resumed before visiting. If you already saw the waterfall and weather is good, choose market meals, shopping and rest. Choose either the waterfall or market and rest today. If the market is closed or going out is difficult, omit those steps, rest at your accommodation and eat at a station-area restaurant that is actually open.

  1. Kii-Katsuura accommodation → Chosen destination: Nachi-no-Taki-mae or Nigiwai Market

If you missed the waterfall, move day two’s return visit here and prepare a Nachi ticket valid on the actual visiting day. This plan does not visit the waterfall on both days. For the market, use your hotel address and official market access information to reach the entrance. Check routes and times from your accommodation to station and market.

Do not repeat the market on departure day if you have already visited. Consider a shorter course if you do not need a spare day or rest.

Day 4: port market, then departure

Visit Danjo Garan only if you have time before your return journey. Omit it if you depart in the morning.

  1. Kii-Katsuura accommodation → Nigiwai Market and meal

If you visited the market the day before, prepare for departure at your accommodation and go to the station instead of repeating it. Otherwise, choose breakfast or shopping at Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market only if time remains before departure. The 1,260-yen subtotal covers one adult day bus ticket on your Nachi visiting day. Use it on the actual day you choose, either day two or the spare day; it does not cover both days. The basic plan uses free worship. The optional paid viewpoint adds 500 yen, giving 1,760 yen; add it only after confirming same-day reception. JR on arrival and departure days, hotel connections, accommodation, meals and airport travel are excluded, so this is neither the total transport cost nor a trip budget. Plan meals around your accommodation and departure

If dinner is booked at your Koyasan accommodation, fit temple visits and return buses around its start time. In Shirahama, choose meal options between your beach hotel and actual stop. In Kii-Katsuura, plan transport first according to whether your hotel is near the station or needs a separate boat or shuttle. Follow your booked property’s meal and shuttle conditions.

Nigiwai Market is an option for meals or shopping. Ordinary hours are 08:00–16:00, food orders until 15:30, with Tuesday closures and exceptions. Leave station-return time on departure day.
