Four nights in Wakayama: move along the coast or stay in city and mountains?

For beach, cliffs and waterfall, spend two nights in Shirahama, then move by JR to Kii-Katsuura for two nights. For castle and temples, compare two nights each in Wakayama City and Koyasan. This assumes late first-day arrival, leaving the castle for day two, temples for day four and descent for the last day. If you can visit on arrival, choose the two-night course with one night each in city and Koyasan.

Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura

Choose this course for Shirahama’s beach and cliffs and Nachi Falls in one trip. Stay two nights near Shirarahama, then move by JR to Kii-Katsuura on day three for two nights. Use separate local buses in each area and change accommodation once.

Day 1: Shirarahama beach walk

Allow time for arrival, reaching accommodation, meals and rest today. Shorten visits to fit your booked transport.

  1. JR Shirahama Station → Shirarahama stop

From JR Shirahama Station (S0), take Sandanbeki-bound Meiko Bus route 12 to Shirarahama (S15). Match JR travel from your starting city with bus connections for your date.

  2. Sandanbeki stop → Cliffs and optional cave visit

Walk about five minutes from the stop, according to tourism guidance, for cliff views. For the cave, buy tickets in the building to the viewpoint’s right and descend by lift. Beyond the roughly 30-minute interior visit, allow time for ticket and lift queues. Ordinary hours are 08:00–17:00, last admission 16:50; check temporary closures and coastal restrictions for your date.

Day 3: move accommodation to Kii-Katsuura

  1. Shirarahama stop → JR Shirahama Station

From Shirarahama (S15), take Tanabe Station-bound Meiko Bus route 11 via JR Shirahama to JR Shirahama Station (S0). Choose a bus arriving before your Kii-Katsuura-bound JR departure, allowing time for ticket and seat checks and station movement.

  2. JR Shirahama Station → Kuroshio to Kii-Katsuura

From JR Shirahama, take a Shingu-bound limited express Kuroshio to Kii-Katsuura. Check travel-date trains and reserved seats and allow boarding preparation after the preceding bus arrives. Leave transfer and waiting time between bus and JR; choose both services again if the connection is tight. Prioritise JR connections and your next hotel’s check-in time over beach sightseeing today. At Kii-Katsuura, follow your booked property’s access guidance for the first night. Before booking, check whether it is near the station or requires a separate shuttle or boat.

  1. Kii-Katsuura Station → Nachi-no-Taki-mae

Prepare a Nachi Area World Heritage Free Ticket valid that day, costing 1,260 yen per adult, then take Nachisan-bound route 31 from the station. The station-front paper-ticket counter opens 08:00–10:30 and 11:30–17:00, closing 10:30–11:30. Digital tickets are sold in the 乗換案内 app. Choose a service stopping in front of the waterfall. From the stop, follow Hiro Shrine’s torii and stone steps to the ordinary worship area. Nachikatsuura tourism guidance lists free ordinary worship 07:00–16:30. Check steps and local access restrictions and leave time for your return bus. The paid Otaki viewpoint is optional; the shrine operator gives adult admission of 500 yen. Its roughly three-minute one-way reception-to-viewpoint walk does not cover the full walk from the bus stop. If same-day viewpoint reception times cannot be confirmed, use ordinary worship only. The basic itinerary excludes the longer Daimonzaka walk.

You can return earlier after ordinary worship based on lunch, rest and actual bus services. The Nachi ticket is a day ticket covering departure and return from Kii-Katsuura, with unlimited travel in the Nachi Station–Nachisan section. 1. Kii-Katsuura accommodation → Nigiwai Market and meal

Choose breakfast or shopping at Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market. Ordinary hours are 08:00–16:00, closed Tuesdays, with exceptions. Check operation and station departure first and omit the market if time is short. This itinerary does not reserve an auction tour or event.

  2. Market and Kii-Katsuura Station → Kii-Katsuura Station and booked departure

Take your booked Osaka-bound Kuroshio from Kii-Katsuura. Omit the market for a morning train or closure. This is not direct to Kansai Airport; for a same-day flight, check airport travel and check-in beyond Osaka.

Subtotal for checked items: 2,420 yen: buses in both areas only

Included items: Four individual Shirahama buses: 1,160 yen; Nachi day bus ticket: 1,260 yen. Ordinary Nachi worship is free.

Extra costs and conditions: All JR, accommodation, meals, hotel connections and airport travel are extra. Optional cave admission at 1,500 yen and viewpoint admission at 500 yen are also excluded.

The 2,420-yen subtotal combines four individual buses at 1,160 yen—station–Shirarahama at 340 yen each way and beach–Sandanbeki at 240 yen each way—with a 1,260-yen adult Nachi day ticket. Free ordinary Nachi worship and free Sandanbeki cliff views are basic. Adding the cave at 1,500 yen gives 3,920 yen; adding only the Nachi viewpoint at 500 yen gives 2,920 yen; adding both gives 4,420 yen. Confirm same-day viewpoint reception first. JR from starting city to Shirahama, Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura and Kii-Katsuura to Osaka, plus all accommodation, meals, hotel connections and airport travel, are excluded. Look up JR fares and reserved seats for each different date; this is not a total trip budget. Unconfirmed individual waterfall-front fares prevent a cost comparison with the day ticket.

5 days / 4 nights B

Two Wakayama City nights and two Koyasan nights

Choose this course for late arrival in Wakayama City and castle and temple visits separate from moving days. Stay two city nights, then two on Koyasan; visit Kongobuji and Danjo Garan on day four and descend on the last day. If you have visiting time on arrival, compare the shorter two-night course with one night each in the city and Koyasan.

Day 1: city accommodation

This plan allows for late arrival, accommodation access, meals and rest on day one. Leave the castle for the next day.

  1. Arrival station: JR Wakayama or Nankai Wakayamashi → Booked city accommodation entrance

Look up trains to JR Wakayama from your starting city for your actual date. Use your property’s official access guide and JR station map to reach the hotel entrance from the appropriate exit. Check the address for your exit and walking time. If arriving at Nankai Wakayamashi instead, it is a different station and needs a separate hotel route. Confirm the arrival station in the property’s access information first.

Choose a coastal JR pass and travel-date trains

Choose Shirahama–Kii-Katsuura trains by date and direction. Compare ordinary tickets and pass coverage, matching local buses to the station and hotel check-in times too.

Compare Kansai WIDE using coastal JR journeys first

The adult 12,000-yen Kansai WIDE pass covers JR sections on the official map for five consecutive days. Shirahama, Kii-Katsuura and Shingu are included, with ordinary-class reserved seats on Kuroshio. All Kuroshio seats are reserved; book before boarding. A foreign passport and Temporary Visitor entry status in Japan are required too.

This course needs separate Nankai Koya Line, cable car and mountain buses for Koyasan, Meiko Bus for Shirahama and local buses for Nachi. Temple, cave and viewpoint admission, accommodation and meals are not part of the pass price.

For four-night course A, look up JR fares by date from starting city to Shirahama, Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura and Kii-Katsuura to final destination on the last day. Compare covered ordinary fares within five consecutive days with 12,000 yen. The course’s 2,420-yen subtotal includes only Meiko Bus and the Nachi day ticket, which the JR pass does not replace.
