5 days in Wakayama: move along the coast or stay in the city and mountains?
For beach, cliffs, and falls together, stay two nights in Shirahama and move by JR to Kii-Katsuura for two nights. For the castle and temples, compare two nights each in Wakayama City and Koyasan. The latter assumes a late arrival on day one, leaving the castle for day two, temples for day four, and descent for the last day. If you can sightsee on arrival, you can also choose three days with one night each in the city and Koyasan.

- JR Shirahama Station → Kuroshio to Kii-Katsuura
At JR Shirahama Station, take a Kuroshio limited express toward Shingu and get off at Kii-Katsuura. Check your travel date's train and reserved seat, choosing a departure with enough boarding time after the preceding station-bound bus. Allow time to walk and wait between bus and JR; if the connection is tight, reselect both services together. Prioritize the JR connection and your next lodging's check-in over beach sightseeing today. On arrival in Kii-Katsuura, follow your booked property's access guidance for your first night there. Before booking, check whether the lodging is near the station or requires a separate shuttle or boat.

The paid Otaki viewing platform is optional. The shrine operator lists adult admission at ¥500; the roughly three-minute one-way walk from reception to the platform is not the total walk from the bus stop. Choose Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market for breakfast or shopping. Regular hours are 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., with Tuesday closures and exceptional opening dates. - Market / Kii-Katsuura Station → Kii-Katsuura Station / booked departure
Board your reserved Kuroshio toward Osaka at Kii-Katsuura Station. Skip the market for a morning train or market closing day. This is not a direct Kansai Airport service; for a same-day flight, check the airport transfer and check-in after Osaka.
Included items: Four regular Shirahama bus rides totaling ¥1,160 plus a ¥1,260 Nachi bus day pass. Nachi general worship access is free
Extra costs and conditions: All JR travel, lodging, meals, lodging transfers, and airport transfers are extra. Optional cave admission of ¥1,500 and paid viewing-platform admission of ¥500 are excluded.
The ¥2,420 partial total adds four regular bus rides—¥340 each way between the station and Shirarahama and ¥240 each way between the beach and Sandanbeki, totaling ¥1,160—to one adult Nachi day pass at ¥1,260. The base plan uses free Nachi general worship access and free Sandanbeki cliff views. Choosing the cave adds ¥1,500, making ¥3,920; choosing only the Nachi paid viewing platform adds ¥500, making ¥2,920; choosing both makes ¥4,420. Confirm same-day reception before adding the paid platform. JR travel from your departure city to Shirahama, Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura, and Kii-Katsuura to Osaka, plus all lodging, meals, lodging transfers, and airport transfers, is excluded. Look up JR fares and reserved seats for each travel date separately; this is not a full trip budget. Two nights in Wakayama City, two in Koyasan
Choose this for a late arrival in Wakayama City and to separate castle and temple visits from travel days. Stay two nights in the city, then two in Koyasan. Visit Kongobuji and Danjo Garan on day four and use the last day to descend. If you have ample sightseeing time on day one, also compare the three-day itinerary with one night in each area.
Day 1: Wakayama City lodging
This arrangement suits a late first-day arrival, with time to reach lodging, eat, and rest. Leave the castle visit for tomorrow.
- Arrival station: JR Wakayama or Nankai Wakayamashi → Booked city lodging entrance
Look up trains from your departure city to JR Wakayama Station for your actual date. Use your booked property's official access directions and the JR station map to reach the hotel entrance from the appropriate exit. Check the exit and walking time using the lodging address. If you choose a service arriving at Nankai Wakayamashi Station, plan access separately because it is different from JR Wakayama Station. Confirm the arrival station in your lodging's access guidance first.

- Wakayamajo-mae / castle keep → Visit the castle keep
Regular hours are 9:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m., with last entry at 5:00 p.m. Avoid closures December 29–31 and December 9, 2026.

Included items: Wakayama Castle keep, Kongobuji, and Konpon Daito admission, plus regular Hashimoto–Koyasan round-trip Koya Line and cable car travel
Extra costs and conditions: Required mountain buses are excluded from this partial total. The reference Koyasan Station Front–Kongobuji-mae segment costs ¥460 each way for adults, or ¥920 round trip; extra lodging-related rides are separate. Mountain buses, departure city–Hashimoto travel, JR services, city buses, limited express supplements, lodging, meals, and luggage storage are excluded.
Regular adult admission is ¥410 for Wakayama Castle keep, ¥1,000 for Kongobuji, and ¥500 for Konpon Daito, totaling ¥1,910. Adding the regular ¥1,980 Hashimoto–Koyasan round-trip fare gives ¥3,890. The one-way rail fare is ¥990, including the Koya Line train and cable car. Add ¥500 to enter Kondo Hall.
Mountain buses are separate from that partial total. Koyasan Station Front–Kongobuji-mae costs ¥460 each way for adults, or ¥920 round trip. The adult Koyasan one-day pass costs ¥1,500, so regular fares are ¥580 cheaper for this round trip alone. The pass applies to its specified date and segments, excluding the express Tateri Line and Koya Ryujin Line. Add necessary bus fares according to your lodging's stops and extra rides. Travel from your departure city, JR services, city buses, lodging, and meals are also extra. Coastal JR passes and trains for your travel date
Choose trains between Shirahama and Kii-Katsuura using your travel date and direction. Compare regular JR tickets with pass coverage, and match regional buses to the station and lodging check-in times.
Start with coastal JR segments when comparing Kansai WIDE
The adult Kansai WIDE pass costs ¥12,000 and covers JR segments shown on the official map for five consecutive days. It includes Shirahama, Kii-Katsuura, and Shingu, and ordinary-car reserved seats on Kuroshio. Kuroshio is fully reserved, so book your seat before boarding. A foreign passport and Temporary Visitor entry status in Japan are also required.
Prepare separate tickets for this itinerary's Nankai Koya Line, cable car, and mountain buses to Koyasan, Meiko Bus in Shirahama, and Nachi regional buses. Temple, cave, and viewing-platform admission, lodging, and meals are excluded from the pass price.
For five-day itinerary A, look up date-specific JR fares from your departure city to Shirahama on day one, Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura, and Kii-Katsuura to your final destination on the last day. Compare the regular ticket total for covered segments within five consecutive days with ¥12,000. The itinerary's ¥2,420 partial total includes only Meiko buses and the Nachi day pass; a JR pass does not replace these.

Coastal JR travel: choose your stations and direction
When moving lodging from Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura, look up Kuroshio services toward Shingu. For the opposite journey to Shirahama, search from Kii-Katsuura Station to Shirahama Station. Local trains and Kuroshio have different travel times and fares; Kuroshio requires a seat reservation.
Enter departure and arrival stations, travel date, and time in the official JR search, then check the combined base fare and limited express charge. Choose a train that leaves enough boarding time after your bus reaches the station. If continuing to Osaka on the last day, search through to your final destination instead of adding intermediate fares again. Airport transfers and flight check-in after Osaka are separate.
