Wakayama travel: start with the mountains or the coast?

For two days, choose a night in Koyasan with temple paintings and a stone garden, or a walk on Shirarahama's white sand followed by Sandanbeki's cliffs the next day. Koyasan uses Nankai trains, a cable car, and mountain buses; the coast uses JR and regional buses. To combine the sea and waterfall, compare the five-day itinerary moving from Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura.

Mountain temples or coastal scenery: what appeals to you?

Compare Kongobuji and Danjo Garan in Koyasan, Shirahama's beach, Sandanbeki, and Engetsu Island, and Nachi Falls from Kii-Katsuura as separate areas. Wakayama Castle keep, temple interiors, the cave, and the paid viewing platform each have different admission and reception conditions.

Itineraries by trip length

The mountains use Nankai trains, a cable car, and mountain buses; the coast uses JR and regional buses. Decide first whether to stay in Koyasan or Shirahama, or move from Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura. Itineraries with a late first-day arrival leave separate days for sightseeing.

2 days, 1 night

Give Koyasan's two temples a day each, or split Shirahama's beach and cliffs across two days. Short stays do not combine the mountains and coast.

3 days, 2 nights

Visit the castle in Wakayama City before moving to Koyasan, or keep the same Shirahama lodging for separate beach, cliff, and Engetsu Island visits.

4 days, 3 nights

Choose two nights in Koyasan followed by a last night in Wakayama City. Compare three nights in Kii-Katsuura if you need a late arrival day and weather buffer for the falls.

5 days, 4 nights

Spend two nights in Shirahama followed by two in Kii-Katsuura to separate the sea and falls. For a late first-day city arrival, two nights each in Wakayama City and Koyasan separate sightseeing from the return day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see Koyasan, Shirahama, and Nachi in two days?

Choose one area first. Mountain rail and cable car travel uses a different transport system from coastal JR services and regional buses. Even the short itineraries above require checking final transfers and return services.
