Wakayama travel: start with the mountains or the coast?

For two days and one night, choose between Koyasan's temple paintings and rock garden, or a Shirarahama beach walk followed by Sandanbeki's cliffs. Koyasan uses Nankai trains, a cable car and mountain buses; the coast uses JR and local buses. For the sea and falls together, compare the five-day route that moves accommodation from Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura.

Mountain temples or coastal scenery?

Compare Kongobu-ji and Danjo Garan in Koyasan, Shirahama's beach, Sandanbeki and Engetsu Island, and Nachi Falls from Kii-Katsuura. The castle keep, temple interiors, cave and paid platform each have their own admission fees and conditions.

Itineraries by trip length

Use Nankai trains, the cable car and mountain buses in Koyasan, and JR and local buses along the coast. First choose one base in Koyasan or Shirahama, or a coastal route from Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura. Routes with a late first arrival leave sightseeing for another day.

2 days / 1 night

Visit two Koyasan temples on separate days, or split Shirahama's beach and cliffs across two days. Choose one area for a short stay.

3 days / 2 nights

Visit the castle in Wakayama City before a night in Koyasan, or stay two nights in Shirahama for separate days at the beach, cliffs and Engetsu Island.

4 days / 3 nights

Stay two nights in Koyasan and the last night in Wakayama City. Compare three Kii-Katsuura nights if arriving late and needing a weather reserve day for the falls.

5 days / 4 nights

Two nights in Shirahama followed by two in Kii-Katsuura separate the sea and falls. For a late city arrival, two nights each in Wakayama City and Koyasan also separate sightseeing and return travel.
