Wakayama Castle

Visit the castle keep while staying in Wakayama City. Allow time to climb to it after the bus, and keep the visit separate from the day you travel to Koyasan or Shirahama.

  • AdmissionKeep admission is JPY 410 for adults and JPY 200 for primary and junior secondary school children. Children in this age group enter free on Saturdays.
  • HoursThe keep opens from 09:00 to 17:30, with last admission at 17:00. It closes from 29 to 31 December and temporarily on 9 December 2026 for cleaning.
  • Getting thereFrom JR Wakayama Station's central exit, take a castle-bound Wakayama Bus service, such as route 0 or 25, to Wakayamajomae. The roughly 10 minutes is time on the bus; add the climb to the keep. JR Wakayama is different from Nankai Wakayamashi.

Kongobu-ji Temple金剛峯寺

At Kongobu-ji, see paintings on sliding doors and a garden where rocks and white sand depict dragons and clouds. Interior admission is paid. If staying at a temple, finish in time for its dinner.

根本大塔

Inside Konpon Daito, Buddhist statues and painted pillars form a mandala. Dainichi Buddha at the centre is surrounded by other statues, with paintings on the pillars and walls. Admission is JPY 500 for junior secondary school age and above; the Kondo interior has separate admission.

Choose this for a beach walk in Shirahama. The route assumes no paid attraction or swimming. For a swim, check the swimming season, lifeguard arrangements and sea conditions separately.

Sandanbeki Cliffs三段壁

At Sandanbeki, watch waves meet the rocky cliffs. The outdoor sea and cliff view needs no ticket. To see waves entering the cave, buy a ticket and take the lift down. Wave conditions vary on the day.

  • AdmissionCliff viewing is free. Cave admission costs JPY 1,500 for visitors of junior secondary school age and above and JPY 750 for primary school children. Younger children enter free.
  • HoursThe cave opens from 08:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:50. Maintenance closures may occur in mid-December.
  • Getting thereAbout 20 minutes by bus from JR Shirahama Station, then roughly five minutes on foot from Sandanbeki stop. A departure from your accommodation has a different journey time. Check return buses for your date.

Take a bus from Kii-Katsuura and view the falls from the free general worship area. Nachikatsuura's tourism organisation lists worship hours of 07:00–16:30. The paid viewing platform is optional; confirm its admission times on the day first.

View the island's central opening from the Shirahama coast. Boat trips and island admission are excluded. Check access restrictions on the day. If hoping for sunset through the opening, check whether your date suits that view.

  • Getting thereAbout five minutes on foot from Rinkai stop. The roughly 16-minute bus time from JR Shirahama does not apply to departures from your accommodation. Allow the walk back to Rinkai and check the station-bound bus against your return JR train.

勝浦漁港にぎわい市場

A port market for dishes using local ingredients, including tuna rice bowls and sushi, and regional products. On departure day, allow time to return to the station after eating. Check meal and activity prices for the menu or programme you choose.

  • HoursThe market usually opens from 08:00 to 16:00, with food orders until 15:30. It closes on Tuesdays; check exceptional opening days.

Do I pay cave admission just to see Sandanbeki's cliffs?

Outdoor cliff viewing is free; the cave has separate admission. If choosing the cave, add regular admission of JPY 1,500 for junior secondary school age and above, plus ticket and lift queue time. No cave fee is needed for outdoor viewing alone.
