Two days in Wakayama: temples or coast?

For a temple stay, spend a night in Koyasan and visit Kongobu-ji and Danjo Garan on separate days. For the beach and cliffs, compare one night in Shirahama followed by Sandanbeki the next day. Koyasan uses Nankai trains, the cable car and mountain buses; Shirahama uses JR and Meiko buses.

Kongobu-ji and Danjo Garan on separate days

Choose this route for a night in Koyasan with time for each temple. Visit Kongobu-ji on the first day and Danjo Garan on the second, travelling by Nankai train, cable car and mountain bus.

Day 1 morning: up the mountain via Gokurakubashi

Take a mountain bus from Koyasan Station to Kongobu-ji, then stay in Koyasan. Choose connections that leave time before temple admission closes. Check your accommodation's access and dinner arrangements.

  1. Nankai Hashimoto → Gokurakubashi

At Nankai Hashimoto, take a local Koya Line train towards Gokurakubashi. Use the weekday timetable or the timetable for weekends and public holidays for your date and check the connecting cable car. Travel from your starting city to Hashimoto is separate. Distinguish the ordinary fare from limited express and reserved-seat supplements.

Route 44 via Daimon South Parking has a different stop sequence. Check the direction and weekday timetable or the timetable for weekends and public holidays, leaving time to visit before admission closes at 16:30. Day 2 morning: Danjo Garan

Add a final visit only if there is enough time before your departure. Skip it for a morning departure.

  1. Koyasan accommodation → Konpon Daito at Danjo Garan

Visit Konpon Daito if your return connections allow. It has separate admission from Kongobu-ji, with usual hours of 08:30–17:00 and admission until 16:30. Check event-day arrangements. The Kondo interior costs an extra JPY 500 if you choose to visit. If you missed Kongobu-ji yesterday, prioritise one site according to the time before your return journey.

  2. Danjo Garan / Kongobujimae → Bus to Koyasan Station

Use the official mountain map to locate the boarding point at Kongobujimae and take a bus to Koyasan Station. The stop timetable lists station-bound routes 31, 41, 43, 52 and 53, at JPY 460 for adults. This is the reference stop after a Kongobu-ji visit; if using another stop near Danjo Garan or your accommodation, check its own station-bound timetable. Weekday services distinguish school days and school holidays, with a separate table for weekends and public holidays. Allow time between bus arrival and cable car departure; shorten the last visit if your connection is early.

Subtotal for the listed items: JPY 3,480 (admission, train and cable car only)

Included items: Adult admission to Kongobu-ji and Konpon Daito, JPY 1,500, plus the ordinary Hashimoto–Koyasan return fare of JPY 1,980, including the Koya Line and cable car

Extra costs and conditions: Required mountain buses are excluded. Koyasan Station–Kongobujimae costs JPY 460 each way, JPY 920 return, with extra rides depending on your accommodation. Travel from your starting city to Hashimoto is also excluded, along with JR and city buses, limited express supplements, accommodation, meals, luggage storage and optional Kondo admission.

Regular adult admission is JPY 1,000 at Kongobu-ji and JPY 500 at Konpon Daito, totalling JPY 1,500. Adding the ordinary Hashimoto–Koyasan return fare of JPY 1,980 gives JPY 3,480. The one-way fare is JPY 990 and includes the Koya Line train and cable car. Add JPY 500 to visit the Kondo interior.

Mountain buses are extra. Koyasan Station–Kongobujimae is JPY 460 each way, JPY 920 return. The adult Koyasan one-day pass is JPY 1,500, so individual fares are JPY 580 less for these two rides alone. The pass is valid on its specified date and routes, excluding the express Tateri and Koya Ryujin lines. Stops and extra rides depend on your accommodation, so add the bus travel you need. Travel from your starting city, JR, city buses, accommodation and meals are separate.

Beach on day one, Sandanbeki on day two

Choose this route for a night by the sea with separate time for the beach and cliffs. Walk Shirarahama on day one, visit Sandanbeki the next day, then return to Shirahama Station. Use Meiko buses between the station, beach and cliffs.

Day 1: JR Shirahama Station to the beach

Walk the beach on day one and visit Sandanbeki on day two before leaving by JR. Choose a return train that allows for the cliffs, lunch and the bus back to Shirahama Station. For a morning departure, skip the cliffs on day two.

  1. JR Shirahama Station → Shirarahama bus stop

At JR Shirahama Station (S0), take Meiko route 12 towards Sandanbeki and get off at Shirarahama (S15). Check the train arrival and bus departure for your date together. The station and beach stop are separate locations.

  2. Sandanbeki bus stop → Cliff views and optional cave visit

The tourism bureau lists a walk of about five minutes from the stop to the free cliff viewpoint. The cave is a separate paid attraction, with regular admission of JPY 1,500 for junior secondary school age and above. Buy a ticket in the building to the right of the viewpoint and take the lift down. The operator's roughly 30-minute cave visit excludes ticket and lift queues. The cave usually opens from 08:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:50. Maintenance closures may occur in mid-December; check weather-related operation on the day. Leave for a bus that connects with your booked departure, and skip the cave if queues are too long.

Subtotal for the listed items: JPY 2,660 (buses and optional cave included)

Included items: Four individual adult bus fares totalling JPY 1,160 and the selected cave's regular admission of JPY 1,500

Extra costs and conditions: This subtotal excludes JR travel between your starting city and Shirahama, accommodation, meals, luggage storage and other attractions.

This uses the fare table revised on 8 April 2021, linked from the official route page as at 9 October. Station–Shirarahama is JPY 340 each way and Shirarahama–Sandanbeki JPY 240 each way: four adult rides total JPY 1,160. With free cliff viewing only, the bus subtotal is JPY 1,160; adding regular cave admission of JPY 1,500 gives JPY 2,660. JR and other costs are excluded. The official two-day pass is JPY 1,600, JPY 440 above these four individual fares. The pass plus regular cave admission totals JPY 3,100 before discounts. Recheck fares, admission and discount conditions for your date. If the official pass's JPY 100 cave discount applies, the combined cost is JPY 3,000, still JPY 340 above individual buses plus regular admission at JPY 2,660. Confirm ticket presentation and date conditions at the attraction.

Separate buses for the mountain, beach and falls

For Koyasan, change from the Nankai Koya Line and cable car to mountain buses. Shirahama uses Meiko buses; Nachi uses Kumano Gobo Nankai Bus's Nachisan Line. A single local bus pass does not cover all three areas.

Koyasan Station–Kongobujimae costs JPY 460 each way, JPY 920 return. The JPY 1,500 one-day pass covers specified dates and routes, excluding the express Tateri and Koya Ryujin lines. Individual fares cost less for these two rides alone. The four Koyasan routes exclude mountain buses from their subtotals; add these and any extra accommodation-related rides. Kongobujimae and Senjuinbashi are different stops. Use the correct weekday timetable or the timetable for weekends and public holidays, including the school-day or school-holiday timetable where relevant, and match it to accommodation access and dated connections.
