Five days in Wakayama: move along the coast or stay in the city and mountains?
For the beach, cliffs and falls, stay two nights in Shirahama, then move by JR for two nights in Kii-Katsuura. For the castle and temples, compare two nights each in Wakayama City and Koyasan. That route assumes a late first arrival: the castle is on day two, temples on day four and descent on the final day. With an early first arrival, the three-day route with one night in each base is another option.
Choose an itinerary for 5 days / 4 nights
Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura
Choose this route to see Shirahama's beach and cliffs and Nachi Falls on one trip. Stay two nights near Shirarahama, then move by JR to Kii-Katsuura on day three for two nights. Each area has its own buses, and the route changes accommodation once.

Day 1: a walk on Shirarahama Beach
Allow time for arrival, reaching your accommodation, meals and rest. Shorten sightseeing to fit your booked transport.
- JR Shirahama Station → Shirarahama bus stop
At JR Shirahama Station (S0), take Meiko route 12 towards Sandanbeki to Shirarahama (S15). Check JR travel from your starting city and the connecting bus for your date together.

- Shirarahama bus stop → Walk along Shirarahama Beach
Walk from the Shirarahama stop to the beach and along the shore. This route is a beach walk; if you plan to swim, check the season and sea conditions separately. Afterwards, have dinner and stay overnight in Shirahama.
Day 2: Sandanbeki and back to the same accommodation
- Shirahama accommodation / Shirarahama → Sandanbeki bus stop
From Shirarahama, take Meiko route 12 towards Sandanbeki and get off there. Check departures, arrivals and stops for your date.

Day 3: move accommodation to Kii-Katsuura
- Shirarahama bus stop → JR Shirahama Station
From Shirarahama (S15), take Meiko route 11 towards Tanabe via JR Shirahama Station and get off at JR Shirahama (S0). Choose a bus that arrives before your Kii-Katsuura-bound train, allowing time for tickets, seat checks and the station transfer.
- JR Shirahama Station → Kuroshio to Kii-Katsuura
At JR Shirahama, board a Shingu-bound Kuroshio limited express and get off at Kii-Katsuura. Check times and reserve a seat for your date, allowing time to prepare after the bus arrives. Leave a transfer and waiting margin; if it is tight, choose the bus and train again together. Today, prioritise the JR connection and next accommodation's check-in over another beach visit. On arrival, follow your accommodation's access directions for the first night. Before booking, check whether it is near the station or needs a separate shuttle or boat.

- Kii-Katsuura Station → Nachinotakimae
Prepare an adult Nachi Area World Heritage day pass, JPY 1,260, valid on your visit date. At the station, take route 31 towards Nachisan, choosing a service that stops at Nachinotakimae. The paper-ticket counter opens 08:00–10:30 and 11:30–17:00, with a break from 10:30–11:30. Digital passes are sold through the 乗換案内 app. Check operating notices and the return route 32 for your date.

Follow the torii and stone steps from the stop to Hiro Shrine's general worship area. Nachikatsuura's tourism organisation lists free general worship from 07:00–16:30. Check steps and access restrictions, leaving time for the return bus. The Otaki viewing platform is optional. The shrine operator lists adult admission at JPY 500. Its roughly three-minute one-way walk from reception excludes the walk from the bus stop. If you cannot confirm paid admission on the day, use the general worship area only. The basic itinerary excludes the longer Daimonzaka walk.

You can return earlier after general worship, adjusting lunch and rest to actual services. Choose breakfast or shopping at Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market. The market usually opens from 08:00 to 16:00 and closes on Tuesdays, with exceptional opening days. Check dated opening and your train first, skipping the market if time is short. This itinerary includes no booked auction tour or event.

- Market / Kii-Katsuura Station → Kii-Katsuura Station and your booked departure
Board your booked Osaka-bound Kuroshio at Kii-Katsuura. Skip the market for a morning train or closure. This is not a direct Kansai Airport service; for a flight that day, check airport travel and check-in after Osaka.
Included items: Four individual Shirahama bus fares totalling JPY 1,160 and a Nachi day pass at JPY 1,260; general worship at Nachi is free
Extra costs and conditions: All JR travel, accommodation, meals, accommodation access and airport travel are extra. Optional cave admission of JPY 1,500 and platform admission of JPY 500 are excluded.
JPY 2,420 combines four individual Shirahama fares totalling JPY 1,160 — station–Shirarahama JPY 340 each way and beach–Sandanbeki JPY 240 each way — with one adult Nachi day pass at JPY 1,260. The basic route uses free cliff viewing and free general worship at Nachi. Add JPY 1,500 for the cave for JPY 3,920; add only JPY 500 for Nachi's platform for JPY 2,920; add both for JPY 4,420. Confirm paid platform admission on the day first. JR from your starting city to Shirahama, Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura and Kii-Katsuura to Osaka is excluded, as are all accommodation, meals, accommodation access and airport travel. Choose a coastal JR pass and dated trains
Select trains between Shirahama and Kii-Katsuura using your date and direction. Compare ordinary tickets with pass coverage, matching local buses to the station and accommodation check-in.
Compare Kansai WIDE against coastal JR travel
The adult Kansai WIDE pass costs JPY 12,000 for five consecutive days on JR routes shown in the official map. It includes Shirahama, Kii-Katsuura and Shingu, with ordinary-class reserved seats on Kuroshio. Kuroshio is all-reserved-seat: book before boarding. A foreign passport and Temporary Visitor entry status are required.
The Nankai Koya Line, cable car, mountain buses, Meiko buses and Nachi buses in these routes need separate tickets. Temple, cave and platform admission, accommodation and meals are extra.
For five-day route A, look up dated JR fares from your starting city to Shirahama, Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura and Kii-Katsuura to the final destination. Compare ordinary fares for covered travel within five consecutive days against JPY 12,000. The JPY 2,420 route subtotal covers Meiko buses and the Nachi day pass only, so a JR pass does not replace it.

Coastal JR: choose stations and direction first
To move from Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura, look up a Shingu-bound Kuroshio. For the reverse visit, search from Kii-Katsuura to Shirahama. Local trains and Kuroshio differ in time and price; Kuroshio requires a reserved seat.
Enter stations, date and time in the official JR search and check the total base fare plus limited express supplement. Choose a train with preparation time after your bus arrives.
