5 days / 4 nights in Wakayama: move along the coast or stay in city and mountains?

For beach, cliffs and waterfall, stay 2 nights in Shirahama, then move by JR to Kii-Katsuura for 2 nights. For castle and temples, compare 2 Wakayama city nights and 2 Koyasan nights. This assumes a late day 1 arrival, leaving the castle for day 2, temples for day 4 and descent for the final day. If you can sightsee on arrival day, also choose the 3-day / 2-night route with a night each in the city and Koyasan.

  1. JR Shirahama Station → Shirarahama bus stop

Take Sandanbeki-bound Meiko route 12 from JR Shirahama (S0) to Shirarahama (S15). Match JR arrival from your starting city with the bus connection for your date.

Day 3 · Move your hotel base to Kii-Katsuura

  1. Shirarahama bus stop → JR Shirahama Station

From Shirarahama (S15), take Tanabe-bound Meiko route 11 via JR Shirahama to JR Shirahama (S0). Choose a bus arriving before your Kii-Katsuura train, with time for ticket and seat checks and station movement.

  2. JR Shirahama Station → Kuroshio to Kii-Katsuura

From JR Shirahama, take a Shingu-bound limited express Kuroshio to Kii-Katsuura. Check the date’s train and reserved seat, choosing a service with enough boarding preparation time after the station-bound bus. Leave time for movement and waiting between bus and JR; reselect both if the connection is tight. Prioritise the JR connection and your next hotel’s check-in time over beach sightseeing today. On arrival, follow your booked hotel’s access guide for your first night there. Before booking, check whether the property is near the station or needs a separate shuttle or boat.

The base return visit views the waterfall from the ordinary worship area. Add the paid viewing platform only after confirming admission on the day.

  1. Kii-Katsuura Station → Nachi-no-Taki-mae

Prepare a Nachi Area World Heritage free-ride ticket valid on your visit day, JPY 1,260 per adult, then take Nachisan-bound route 31 from the station. The station-front paper-ticket counter opens 08:00–10:30 and 11:30–17:00, closing for a break from 10:30 to 11:30. Digital tickets are sold through the Norikae Annai (乗換案内) app. Choose a service calling at the waterfall stop. Check services, suspension notices and the returning route 32 for your date together.

  2. Nachi-no-Taki-mae → Hiro Shrine ordinary worship and waterfall views

From the stop, follow Hiro Shrine’s torii and stone steps to the ordinary worship area. Nachikatsuura Tourism Organization lists free ordinary worship from 07:00 to 16:30. Check the steps and local restrictions, leaving time for your return bus. The paid Otaki viewing platform is optional: the shrine operator lists adult admission of JPY 500. Its roughly 3-minute one-way walk from reception to the platform is not the whole walk from the bus stop. If you cannot confirm the platform’s admission hours for the day, use only ordinary worship and return. A long Daimonzaka walk is outside the base itinerary.

  3. Nachi-no-Taki-mae → Kii-Katsuura Station and return to the same hotel

Take station-bound route 32 back to Kii-Katsuura. Choose the bus to suit when your visit ends and any connection beyond the station. You can return earlier after ordinary worship to suit lunch, rest and the day’s actual services. The Nachi ticket is a day ticket for departure from and return to Kii-Katsuura, with unlimited travel between Nachi Station and Nachisan. Day 5 · Market breakfast before departure

  1. Kii-Katsuura hotel → Nigiwai Market and meals

Choose Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market for breakfast or shopping. Usual hours are 08:00–16:00, closed Tuesdays, with exceptional opening days. Check operations and your station departure first; skip the market if time is short. This does not book an auction tour or event.

Find Nigiwai Market operator and opening calendarNigiwai Market usual hours and address

  2. Market and Kii-Katsuura Station → Kii-Katsuura and booked departure

Take your booked Osaka-bound Kuroshio from Kii-Katsuura. Skip the market for a morning train or closure. This is not direct to Kansai Airport; for a same-day flight, check airport transport and check-in after Osaka too.

Subtotal for checked items: JPY 2,420 (buses in the two areas only)

Included items: The subtotal includes four Shirahama individual bus fares totalling JPY 1,160 and a JPY 1,260 Nachi bus day ticket. Nachi ordinary worship is free.

Extra costs and conditions: All JR, accommodation, meals, hotel access and airport transfers are extra. Optional cave admission JPY 1,500 and paid platform JPY 500 are excluded.

JPY 2,420 combines four individual buses—station–Shirarahama JPY 340 each way and beach–Sandanbeki JPY 240 each way, totalling JPY 1,160—with one adult JPY 1,260 Nachi day ticket. Free ordinary worship at Nachi and free Sandanbeki cliff views form the base. Add JPY 1,500 for the cave, making JPY 3,920; add only the JPY 500 Nachi platform for JPY 2,920; or add both for JPY 4,420. Confirm the platform’s admission on the day first. JR from your starting city to Shirahama, Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura and Kii-Katsuura to Osaka, plus all accommodation, meals, hotel access and airport transfers are excluded. Check JR fares and reserved seats for each actual date separately; this is not a total trip budget. Individual waterfall-stop fares are unconfirmed, preventing comparison with the day ticket.

4 nights, 5 days B

Two Wakayama city nights and two Koyasan nights

Choose this route for a late first-day arrival in Wakayama city, separating castle and temple visits from moving days. Spend 2 nights in the city and 2 in Koyasan. Visit Kongobuji and Danjo Garan on day 4, then descend on the final day. If you can sightsee fully on arrival day, also compare the 3-day / 2-night route with a night each in Wakayama city and Koyasan.

Day 1 · Wakayama city hotel

This allocation suits a late first-day arrival, with time to reach your hotel, eat and rest. Leave the castle for tomorrow.

  1. Arrival station: JR Wakayama or Nankai Wakayamashi → Booked city hotel entrance

Look up trains from your starting city to JR Wakayama for the actual date. Use the hotel’s official access guide and JR station map to choose an exit and reach the hotel entrance. Check the exit and walking time using its actual address. If arriving at Nankai Wakayamashi, remember it is a different station and plan the hotel route from there separately. Confirm the arrival station in the hotel access information first.

Choose a coastal JR pass and actual-date trains

Choose Shirahama–Kii-Katsuura trains using your travel date and direction. Compare ordinary JR tickets and pass coverage, matching local buses to the station and hotel check-in times too.

Compare Kansai WIDE for coastal JR sections first

Kansai WIDE costs JPY 12,000 per adult for 5 consecutive days on JR sections in the official map. It includes Shirahama, Kii-Katsuura and Shingu, and ordinary-class reserved seats on Kuroshio. Kuroshio is all reserved seating, so book a seat before boarding. A foreign passport and Japan’s Temporary Visitor entry status are also required.

This route’s Nankai Koya Line, cable car and mountain buses, Shirahama Meiko buses and Nachi local buses need separate tickets. Temple, cave and platform admission, accommodation and meals are also outside the pass price.

For 5-day / 4-night route A, look up actual-date JR fares from your starting city to Shirahama, Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura and Kii-Katsuura to your final destination. Compare ordinary tickets for covered journeys within 5 consecutive days against JPY 12,000. The route’s JPY 2,420 subtotal covers only Meiko buses and the Nachi day ticket, which a JR pass does not replace.
