Wakayama travel: mountains or coast first?

For 2 days / 1 night, choose temple paintings, stone gardens and a Koyasan stay, or Shirarahama’s white sand followed by Sandanbeki cliffs the next day. Koyasan uses Nankai trains, cable car and mountain buses; the coast uses JR and local buses. For both sea and waterfall, compare the 5-day / 4-night hotel-move route from Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura.

Mountain temples or coastal views: which appeals to you?

Compare Kongobuji and Danjo Garan in Koyasan, Shirahama’s beach, Sandanbeki and Engetsuto, and Nachi Falls from Kii-Katsuura. Wakayama Castle keep, temple interiors, the cave and paid waterfall platform each have separate fees and admission conditions.

Itineraries by trip length

Use Nankai trains, cable car and mountain buses in the mountains, or JR and local buses along the coast. First choose a stay in either Koyasan or Shirahama, or a hotel move from Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura. Late-arrival routes leave separate sightseeing days.

1 night, 2 days

Give two Koyasan temples a day each, or separate Shirahama’s beach and cliffs. Short stays do not combine mountains and coast.

2 nights, 3 days

Visit the castle in Wakayama city, then move to Koyasan, or spend 2 nights at the same Shirahama hotel for the beach, cliffs and Engetsuto.

3 nights, 4 days

Spend 2 nights in Koyasan, then the last night in Wakayama city. Compare 3 Kii-Katsuura nights if you arrive late on day 1 and need a weather backup day for the waterfall.

4 nights, 5 days

Spend 2 nights in Shirahama and 2 in Kii-Katsuura for sea and waterfall. For a late city arrival, 2 Wakayama city nights and 2 Koyasan nights also separate sightseeing from the return journey.
