4 days / 3 nights in Wakayama: mountain stay or a flexible waterfall trip?
For a day each at the temples and a castle visit too, stay 2 nights in Koyasan, then the last night in Wakayama city. For a late Kii-Katsuura arrival and weather flexibility at Nachi Falls, compare 3 nights at the same hotel. Consider a shorter stay if arrival-day sightseeing is possible and no backup day is needed.

Choose this route for more time at Koyasan temples and a final-day castle visit. Spend 2 nights in Koyasan with a day each for Kongobuji and Danjo Garan, then descend to Wakayama city on day 3 for 1 night.

Day 1 · Ascend to Koyasan and visit Kongobuji
Take a mountain bus from Koyasan Station to Kongobuji, then stay in Koyasan. Match temple hours with bus and cable-car connections for your date. Check your property’s information for getting there and meal times.
- Nankai Hashimoto → Gokurakubashi
Take a Nankai Koya Line local train from Hashimoto towards Gokurakubashi. Check the weekday or weekend/public holiday timetable for your date, together with the cable-car connection. Transport from your starting city to Hashimoto is separate. Distinguish ordinary tickets from additional reserved-seat and limited express charges.

Route 44 via Daimon Minami car park has a different stopping sequence. - Koyasan hotel and station-bound bus stop → Bus to Koyasan Station
Pack your luggage, then use the official mountain map and hotel access information to find a Koyasan Station-bound stop. At Kongobuji-mae, station-bound routes are 31, 41, 43, 52 and 53, with adult fare JPY 460. At other stops, check that stop’s station-bound times and fare. Included items: The subtotal includes admission to Wakayama Castle keep, Kongobuji and Konpon Daito, plus ordinary return travel between Hashimoto and Koyasan on Koya Line trains and the cable car.
Extra costs and conditions: Required mountain buses are excluded. The reference Koyasan Station–Kongobuji-mae section costs JPY 460 each way, JPY 920 return; additional hotel journeys are separate. Starting-city–Hashimoto transport, JR, city buses, limited express supplements, accommodation, meals and luggage storage are also excluded.
Ordinary adult admission: Wakayama Castle keep JPY 410 + Kongobuji JPY 1,000 + Konpon Daito JPY 500 = JPY 1,910. Add ordinary Hashimoto–Koyasan return transport of JPY 1,980 for JPY 3,890. The JPY 990 one-way fare includes Koya Line trains and the cable car. Add JPY 500 for Kondo’s interior.
Mountain buses are extra. Koyasan Station–Kongobuji-mae costs JPY 460 each way, JPY 920 return. It applies on the designated date and sections, excluding the express Tateri Line and Koya-Ryujin Line. Add fares for your hotel’s actual stops and extra journeys. Starting-city transport, JR, city buses, accommodation and meals are separate. Stay in Kii-Katsuura for Nachi Falls
Choose this route for a late day 1 arrival in Kii-Katsuura and flexibility to move the waterfall visit by a day for weather. Spend 3 nights at the same hotel, with arrival, waterfall and backup/rest days. Compare a shorter stay if you can sightsee fully on arrival day and do not need a backup day.
Day 1 · Arrive at the station and go to your hotel
This allocation suits a late first-day arrival. Go to your hotel, eat and rest today, then visit the waterfall tomorrow. It does not assume a full sightseeing day on arrival.
- JR Kii-Katsuura Station → Your booked hotel entrance
Look up trains from your starting city to JR Kii-Katsuura for your date. Follow your actual hotel’s access instructions after arrival. Do not continue onto the Nachisan bus today; spend your first night in Kii-Katsuura.
Day 2 · Nachi Falls
The base return visit views the waterfall from the ordinary worship area. Add the paid viewing platform only after confirming admission on the day.
- Kii-Katsuura Station → Nachi-no-Taki-mae
Prepare a Nachi Area World Heritage free-ride ticket valid on your visit day, JPY 1,260 per adult, then take Nachisan-bound route 31 from the station. The station-front paper-ticket counter opens 08:00–10:30 and 11:30–17:00, closing for a break from 10:30 to 11:30. Digital tickets are sold through the Norikae Annai (乗換案内) app. Choose a service calling at the waterfall stop. Check services, suspension notices and the returning route 32 for your date together.

- Nachi-no-Taki-mae → Hiro Shrine ordinary worship and waterfall views
From the stop, follow Hiro Shrine’s torii and stone steps to the ordinary worship area. Nachikatsuura Tourism Organization lists free ordinary worship from 07:00 to 16:30. Check the steps and local restrictions, leaving time for your return bus. The paid Otaki viewing platform is optional: the shrine operator lists adult admission of JPY 500. Its roughly 3-minute one-way walk from reception to the platform is not the whole walk from the bus stop. If you cannot confirm the platform’s admission hours for the day, use only ordinary worship and return. A long Daimonzaka walk is outside the base itinerary.

- Nachi-no-Taki-mae → Kii-Katsuura Station and return to the same hotel
Take station-bound route 32 back to Kii-Katsuura. Choose the bus to suit when your visit ends and any connection beyond the station. You can return earlier after ordinary worship to suit lunch, rest and the day’s actual services. The Nachi ticket is a day ticket for departure from and return to Kii-Katsuura, with unlimited travel between Nachi Station and Nachisan. Return to the same hotel, have dinner and spend your second night there.

Day 3 · Waterfall backup day, or market and rest in good weather
If you could not visit yesterday, check weather, facility restrictions and buses, then move day 2’s waterfall visit to today. Check that buses and admission have resumed before leaving. If you already visited and weather is good, choose market meals, shopping and rest. Choose either the waterfall or market/rest today. If the market is closed or going outside is difficult, skip the outing, rest at your hotel and eat at a station-area restaurant that is actually open.
- Kii-Katsuura hotel → Chosen destination: Nachi-no-Taki-mae or Nigiwai Market
If you missed the waterfall yesterday, move day 2’s return visit to today and buy a Nachi ticket valid on the actual visit date. The plan does not visit the waterfall on both days. For a market day, use your hotel address and the market’s official access guide to reach the entrance. Check routes and times to the station and market from that actual address.

For the market, use usual 08:00–16:00 hours and food orders until 15:30 as a guide, but check Tuesday and temporary closures first. Meals, shopping and activities are excluded from the subtotal.

Day 4 · Harbour market before departure
Add the final visit only if time remains before your departure connection. Skip it for a morning departure.
- Kii-Katsuura hotel → Nigiwai Market and meals

If you have not visited and time remains before departure, choose breakfast or shopping at Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market. Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market · 勝浦漁港にぎわい市場 Usual hours are 08:00–16:00, closed Tuesdays; check exceptional opening days first. Auction tours, fish-cutting events, menu prices and seats are not included in this itinerary.

- Market and Kii-Katsuura Station → Kii-Katsuura and booked departure
Take your booked Osaka-bound Kuroshio from Kii-Katsuura. Choose the train and reserved seat for your date before setting market time. Skip the market for a closure or morning train. Airport transfers and check-in after Osaka are separate.
Included items: The subtotal includes one adult Nachi Area World Heritage free-ride ticket valid on the waterfall visit day. Ordinary worship is free.
Extra costs and conditions: All JR, hotel access transport, market meals, accommodation and airport transfers are extra. Add JPY 500 per adult for the optional paid platform.
JPY 1,260 is a partial subtotal for one adult bus day ticket on the actual Nachi visit day. Use it on either day 2 or the backup day, not both. The base uses free ordinary worship; adding the paid platform costs another JPY 500, for JPY 1,760. Add it only after confirming admission on the day. First-day and departure-day JR, hotel access, accommodation, meals and airport transfers are excluded, so this is neither all transport costs nor a total trip budget. Individual fares to the waterfall stop are unconfirmed, preventing a cost comparison with the day ticket.

Plan meals around your hotel base and departure
For booked Koyasan hotel dinners, set temple visits and return buses around the meal start time. In Shirahama, choose meals between your beach hotel and actual bus stop. In Kii-Katsuura, first plan access according to whether your hotel is near the station or requires a boat or shuttle. Follow the booked property’s meal and shuttle conditions.
Nigiwai Market is an option for meals or shopping. Usual hours are 08:00–16:00, food orders until 15:30, with Tuesday closures and exceptional opening days. Frequently asked questions
Do I return to the waterfall the next day after seeing it?
If you have already visited, choose market meals, shopping or hotel rest on the backup day. If you visit the market then, go to the station without repeating it on departure day. Compare a shorter route if you do not need a weather backup or rest day.
Hiro Shrine platform fees and walk from receptionNigiwai Market usual hours and address
Can I take a flight immediately after reaching Osaka in the afternoon from Kii-Katsuura?
Check the Kuroshio service and seats for your date first. Airport transport and check-in still remain after Osaka Station. Skip the market and go to the station first for a morning train or if time is short. Without a flight time, a same-day connection cannot be confirmed.
Do I need two bus tickets if moving the waterfall visit to the backup day?
This route visits the waterfall on only one of days 2 and 3, pricing one JPY 1,260 day ticket valid on the actual visit day. A used ticket cannot be reused or refunded the next day. Visiting on both days needs a ticket for each and changes the base subtotal.
