4 days in Wakayama: mountain stay or more flexibility for the falls?
For a day each at Koyasan's temples and a Wakayama Castle visit, stay two nights in Koyasan and your last night in Wakayama City. For a late arrival in Kii-Katsuura and a weather buffer for Nachi Falls, compare three nights at the same lodging. Consider a shorter stay if you can sightsee on arrival and do not need a buffer.

Two nights in Koyasan, then Wakayama Castle on the last day
Choose this for more time at Koyasan temples and a last-day visit to Wakayama Castle. Stay two nights in Koyasan, giving Kongobuji and Danjo Garan a day each, then descend to Wakayama City on day three for one night.

Day 1: ascend to Koyasan and visit Kongobuji
Take a mountain bus from Koyasan Station to Kongobuji, then stay overnight in Koyasan. Plan departure around temple hours and your travel date's bus and cable car connections. Follow your booked lodging's guidance for access and meal times.
- Nankai Hashimoto → Gokurakubashi
Take a Koya Line local train toward Gokurakubashi from Nankai Hashimoto. Check your travel date's weekday or weekend/public holiday timetable together with the cable car connection at Gokurakubashi. Travel from your departure city to Hashimoto is separate. Distinguish regular tickets from reserved-seat or limited express supplements.

Included items: Wakayama Castle keep, Kongobuji, and Konpon Daito admission, plus regular Hashimoto–Koyasan round-trip Koya Line and cable car travel
Extra costs and conditions: Required mountain buses are excluded from this partial total. The reference Koyasan Station Front–Kongobuji-mae segment costs ¥460 each way for adults, or ¥920 round trip; extra lodging-related rides are separate. Mountain buses, departure city–Hashimoto travel, JR services, city buses, limited express supplements, lodging, meals, and luggage storage are excluded.
Regular adult admission is ¥410 for Wakayama Castle keep, ¥1,000 for Kongobuji, and ¥500 for Konpon Daito, totaling ¥1,910. Adding the regular ¥1,980 Hashimoto–Koyasan round-trip fare gives ¥3,890. The one-way rail fare is ¥990, including the Koya Line train and cable car. Add ¥500 to enter Kondo Hall.
Mountain buses are separate from that partial total. Koyasan Station Front–Kongobuji-mae costs ¥460 each way for adults, or ¥920 round trip. The adult Koyasan one-day pass costs ¥1,500, so regular fares are ¥580 cheaper for this round trip alone. The pass applies to its specified date and segments, excluding the express Tateri Line and Koya Ryujin Line. Add necessary bus fares according to your lodging's stops and extra rides. Travel from your departure city, JR services, city buses, lodging, and meals are also extra. With two nights in Koyasan, arrival, sightseeing, and descent span three days, so one World Heritage two-day ticket cannot cover them all.

Stay in Kii-Katsuura for Nachi Falls
Choose this for a late first-day arrival in Kii-Katsuura and the flexibility to move the Nachi Falls visit by one day for weather. Stay three nights at the same lodging, separating arrival, the falls visit, and a buffer or rest day. Compare a shorter stay if you have ample sightseeing time on arrival and do not need a buffer.
Day 1: arrive at the station and head to lodging
This arrangement suits a late first-day arrival. Move to your lodging, eat, and rest today, then visit the falls tomorrow. It does not assume a full sightseeing day on arrival.
- JR Kii-Katsuura Station → Booked lodging entrance
Look up trains from your departure city to JR Kii-Katsuura Station for your travel date. After arrival, follow your actual lodging's access directions. Do not continue on the Nachisan Line bus today; spend the night in Kii-Katsuura.
Day 2: Nachi Falls
The base round trip uses general worship access to see the falls. Add the paid viewing platform only after confirming reception on the day.
- Kii-Katsuura Station → Nachi-no-Taki-mae
Prepare a Nachi Area World Heritage Free Ticket valid that day (¥1,260 for adults) and take route 31 toward Nachisan from the station. The paper-ticket counter in front of the station is open 8:00–10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m., closing 10:30–11:30 a.m. Digital tickets are sold in the 乗換案内 app. Choose a service stopping at the waterfall stop. Follow Hiro Shrine's torii gate and stone steps from the stop to the general worship area. Nachikatsuura Tourism Organization lists free general worship access from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Check stair access and local restrictions, leaving time for your return bus. The paid Otaki viewing platform is optional. The shrine operator lists adult admission at ¥500; the roughly three-minute one-way walk from reception to the platform is not the total walk from the bus stop. If you cannot confirm same-day platform reception, use general worship access only and return. The long Daimonzaka walk is excluded from the base itinerary.

You can return earlier according to lunch, rest, and actual services on your travel date. Day 3: falls buffer, or market and rest in good weather
If you missed the falls the previous day, check weather, access restrictions, bus services, and whether facility reception has resumed before moving the day-two visit here. If you have already seen the falls and the weather is good, choose a market meal, shopping, and rest. Choose either the falls or the market and rest today. If the market is closed or going outside is difficult, skip the outing, rest at your lodging, and eat at an open restaurant near the station.
- Kii-Katsuura lodging → Choose Nachi-no-Taki-mae or Nigiwai Market
If you missed the falls yesterday, move the day-two round trip here and prepare a Nachi ticket valid on the actual visit day. This is not a plan to visit the falls on both days. For the market option, use your lodging address and the official market access guidance to find the entrance. Check routes and travel times to the station and market from your actual lodging.

For the market, use regular hours of 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. and food orders until 3:30 p.m. as a guide, but check Tuesday and temporary closures first. Extra costs and conditions: All JR travel, lodging transfers, market meals, accommodation, and airport transfers are extra. The optional paid viewing platform adds ¥500 for adults.
The ¥1,260 partial total includes only one adult bus day pass for the actual Nachi visit day. Use it on either day two or the buffer day; it does not cover both days. The base plan uses free general worship access. Choosing the paid viewing platform adds ¥500, making ¥1,760; add it only after confirming reception on the day. JR travel on arrival and departure days, lodging transfers, accommodation, meals, and airport transfers are all excluded, so this is not total transport or trip spending. Plan meals around your lodging base and departures
If you book dinner at your Koyasan lodging, plan temple visits and the return bus around the meal's start time. In Shirahama, choose a meal stop between your beach lodging and its actual bus stop. In Kii-Katsuura, plan access first according to whether your lodging is near the station or needs a separate boat or shuttle. Follow your booked property's meal and transfer conditions.
Nigiwai Market is an option for a meal or shopping. Regular hours are 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., with food orders until 3:30 p.m.; Tuesday closures have exceptions. On departure day, leave time to return to the station. Check individual stall menus, prices, seats, auction tours, and fish-cutting events separately. Frequently asked questions
Do I revisit Nachi Falls the next day?
If you have already seen the falls, use the buffer day for a meal or shopping at the market, or rest at your lodging. If you have visited the market, go directly to the station on departure day instead of repeating it. Compare shorter itineraries if you do not need a weather buffer or rest day.
Hiro Shrine viewing-platform fee and walk from receptionNigiwai Market regular hours and address
Can I catch a flight immediately after reaching Osaka in the afternoon from Kii-Katsuura?
First check Kuroshio services and seat availability from Kii-Katsuura to Osaka for your travel date. After reaching Osaka Station, you still need an airport transfer and check-in time. For a morning train or a tight connection, skip the market and go to the station first. A same-day flight connection cannot be confirmed without your flight time.
If I move the falls visit to the buffer day, do I buy two bus passes?
This itinerary visits the falls on only one of days two and three, budgeting one ¥1,260 day pass valid on the actual visit date. A used ticket cannot be reused or refunded the next day. Visiting on both days requires a separate day pass for each and changes the base partial total.
