3 days in Wakayama: castle and temples, or stay on the coast?

For Wakayama Castle and temples together, stay one night in Wakayama City and move to Koyasan for one night. Transfer from JR to Nankai at Hashimoto, then ascend by cable car and mountain bus. To give the beach, cliffs, and Engetsu Island a day each, compare two nights at the same Shirahama lodging.

From Wakayama Castle to Koyasan's temples

Choose this to combine Wakayama Castle and Koyasan temples. After a night in Wakayama City, travel by JR to Hashimoto and continue by Nankai train, cable car, and bus for a night in Koyasan.

Day 1: Wakayama Castle keep and a city overnight stay

In the city, choose lodging with access to JR Wakayama Station. In the mountains, confirm access to Kongobuji, Danjo Garan, and station-bound buses. Once you know your lodging address and travel dates, check connections across JR, Nankai, cable car, and mountain bus services.

  1. JR Wakayama Station central exit → Wakayamajo-mae

From JR Wakayama Station's central exit, take an applicable Wakayama Bus service toward the castle, such as routes 0 or 25, and get off at Wakayamajo-mae. The official roughly 10 minutes is bus riding time; waiting and the climb from the stop to the keep are additional. Travel-date departures and round-trip bus fares are excluded from the partial total.

Mountain buses are separate from that partial total. Koyasan Station Front–Kongobuji-mae costs ¥460 each way for adults, or ¥920 round trip.
