Wakayama Castle, then Koyasan temples

Choose this route to combine Wakayama Castle and Koyasan's temples. Stay one night in Wakayama City, take JR to Hashimoto, then continue by Nankai train, cable car and bus for one night in Koyasan.

Day 1: Wakayama Castle keep and a city stay

In the city, choose accommodation with access to JR Wakayama Station. In Koyasan, check access to Kongobu-ji, Danjo Garan and station-bound buses. Once you have addresses and dates, check the JR, Nankai, cable car and mountain bus connections together.

  1. JR Wakayama Station central exit → Wakayamajomae

    From JR Wakayama Station's central exit, take an appropriate castle-bound Wakayama Bus service, such as route 0 or 25, and get off at Wakayamajomae. The official roughly 10-minute journey is time on the bus; waiting and the climb to the keep are extra. Times and return bus fares are excluded from the subtotal.

  2. Wakayamajomae / castle keep → Visit and meal

    Have lunch after the castle visit, or, if arriving later, check that lunch first still leaves time before last admission at 17:00. Usual keep hours are 09:00–17:30. It closes on 29–31 December and temporarily on 9 December 2026.

  3. Castle keep / Wakayamajomae → Towards JR Wakayama and your city accommodation

    After visiting, check the JR Wakayama-bound boarding point and bus at Wakayamajomae and return. Stay in Wakayama City tonight, then travel to Koyasan tomorrow.

Day 2 morning: JR Wakayama to Hashimoto

  1. JR Wakayama Station → Wakayama Line to Hashimoto

    At JR Wakayama Station, choose a Wakayama Line train towards Kokawa and Hashimoto. The official station guide lists platform 7; follow the day's displays. Use JR Wakayama rather than Nankai Wakayamashi or the Kishigawa Line. Look up your JR arrival and onward Nankai connection for your date.

  2. JR Hashimoto → Nankai Koya Line platform

    Hashimoto · 橋本 At Hashimoto, change from JR to the Nankai Koya Line towards Gokurakubashi. Check arrival and departure times, station transfer and ticket preparation together. Choose connections through the Nankai train, cable car and mountain bus from your JR arrival.

  3. Nankai Hashimoto → Gokurakubashi

    At Nankai Hashimoto, take a local Koya Line train towards Gokurakubashi. Use the weekday timetable or the timetable for weekends and public holidays for your date and check the connecting cable car. Travel from your starting city to Hashimoto is separate. Distinguish the ordinary fare from limited express and reserved-seat supplements.

  4. Gokurakubashi → Cable car to Koyasan Station

    Change from the train to the Koyasan cable car. Choose a departure with time to transfer after the train arrives, using the timetable for your date. From Koyasan Station, continue by mountain bus to your temple or accommodation.

  5. Outside Koyasan Station → Kongobujimae bus stop

    Take a mountain bus that serves Kongobujimae and get off there. The official fare table lists JPY 460 for adults on routes 21, 31, 41, 42, 43, 52, 53 and 55 over this section. Route 44 via Daimon South Parking has a different stop sequence. Check the direction and weekday timetable or the timetable for weekends and public holidays, leaving time to visit before admission closes at 16:30. If going to your accommodation first, check its own stop.

  6. Kongobujimae → Visit Kongobu-ji

    Walk from the stop to Kongobu-ji. Usual hours are 08:30–17:00, with admission until 16:30; check arrangements on event days. Afterwards, go to your booked accommodation. If you arrive late, visit Kongobu-ji first the next morning and adjust the time for Danjo Garan.

  7. Kongobu-ji → Accommodation, dinner and overnight stay

    Return to your booked accommodation after the visit. Check the actual walking or bus route and dinner starting time in your booking. If arriving late, ask whether dinner can still be provided.

Day 3: Danjo Garan, then down the mountain

Add a final visit only if there is enough time before your departure. Skip it for a morning departure.

  1. Koyasan accommodation → Konpon Daito at Danjo Garan

    Visit Konpon Daito if your return connections allow. It has separate admission from Kongobu-ji, with usual hours of 08:30–17:00 and admission until 16:30. Check event-day arrangements. The Kondo interior costs an extra JPY 500 if you choose to visit. If you missed Kongobu-ji yesterday, prioritise one site according to the time before your return journey.

  2. Danjo Garan / Kongobujimae → Bus to Koyasan Station

    Use the official mountain map to locate the boarding point at Kongobujimae and take a bus to Koyasan Station. The stop timetable lists station-bound routes 31, 41, 43, 52 and 53, at JPY 460 for adults. This is the reference stop after a Kongobu-ji visit; if using another stop near Danjo Garan or your accommodation, check its own station-bound timetable. Weekday services distinguish school days and school holidays, with a separate table for weekends and public holidays. Allow time between bus arrival and cable car departure; shorten the last visit if your connection is early.

  3. Koyasan Station → Cable car to Gokurakubashi

    Take the cable car from Koyasan to Gokurakubashi. Check its departure in the weekday timetable or the timetable for weekends and public holidays for your date. Allow time to get from the bus to the cable car platform.

  4. Gokurakubashi → Nankai Hashimoto

    Change from the cable car to a local train towards Hashimoto. Check the destination and departure for your date, allowing time to move through the station and check tickets. Look up your onward connection from Hashimoto.

  5. Nankai Hashimoto → Onwards to your chosen city or airport

    For Wakayama City, check through the transfer to the JR Wakayama Line at Hashimoto. For Osaka, check through to your chosen Nankai terminus. Allow time for tickets, station transfers and waiting; airport travel and check-in are separate. For a flight, check onward trains against its departure time. If leaving early, skip the last temple visit and plan the journey down first.

Mountain buses are extra. Koyasan Station–Kongobujimae is JPY 460 each way, JPY 920 return. The adult Koyasan one-day pass is JPY 1,500, so individual fares are JPY 580 less for these two rides alone. The pass covers specified dates and routes, excluding the express Tateri and Koya Ryujin lines. Add any extra rides required by your accommodation. Travel from your starting city, JR, city buses, accommodation and meals are separate.

A day each for the beach, cliffs and Engetsu Island

Choose this route for separate days at the beach, cliffs and Engetsu Island. Stay two nights at the same accommodation near Shirarahama, using Meiko buses. On the final day, view the island from the coast before returning to Shirahama Station.

Day 1: from the station to beachfront accommodation

Stay two nights near Shirarahama, with a day each for the beach, cliffs and Engetsu Island. On the last day, allow time after viewing the island to return by bus for your JR train. Skip Engetsu Island if leaving in the morning.

  1. JR Shirahama Station → Shirarahama bus stop

    At JR Shirahama Station (S0), take Meiko route 12 towards Sandanbeki and get off at Shirarahama (S15). Check the train arrival and bus departure for your date together. The station and beach stop are separate locations.

  2. Shirarahama bus stop → Walk along Shirarahama Beach

    Walk from the Shirarahama stop to the beach and along the shore. This route is a beach walk; if you plan to swim, check the season and sea conditions separately. Afterwards, have dinner and stay overnight in Shirahama.

Day 2: Sandanbeki and back

  1. Shirahama accommodation / Shirarahama → Sandanbeki bus stop

    From Shirarahama, take Meiko route 12 towards Sandanbeki and get off there. Check departures, arrivals and stops for your date.

  2. Sandanbeki bus stop → Cliffs and optional cave

    Walk roughly five minutes from the stop to the cliff viewpoint, as listed by the tourism bureau. For the cave, buy a ticket in the building to the right of the viewpoint and take the lift down. Add ticket and queue time to the operator's roughly 30-minute interior visit.

  3. Sandanbeki bus stop → Return to Shirarahama and your accommodation

    Check a return route 11 service that stops at Shirarahama. Have lunch and rest near the beach before a second night at the same accommodation. Adjust coastal visits for wind, waves and access restrictions.

Day 3 morning: bus centre to Rinkai

  1. Shirahama Bus Center → Rinkai (Engetsuto) bus stop

    At Shirahama Bus Center (S14), take Meiko loop route 102 to Rinkai (Engetsuto) (S54). Check times and stops for your date. Some loop services do not stop at Shirarahama, so this route boards at the bus centre.

  2. Rinkai bus stop → View Engetsu Island from the coast

    Walk roughly five minutes from Rinkai to the coastal viewing area, as listed by the tourism association. This is a shore view without a boat trip or island landing. As a morning visit, it leaves no time to wait for sunset through the opening. Follow access restrictions and shorten the visit if the walking route is closed.

  3. Rinkai → Route 101 to Shirarahama

    From Rinkai, take a Meiko route 101 service that stops at Shirarahama. Check the timetable and bus destination for your date. Rinkai, the bus centre and Shirarahama are different stops.

  4. Shirarahama → JR Shirahama Station

    From Shirarahama, take station-bound Meiko route 11 to JR Shirahama Station, matching it to your return train. Skip Engetsu Island for a morning departure. The official roughly 16-minute station-to-Rinkai bus journey does not cover the whole return trip from the coast.

The six Meiko rides total JPY 1,460 in individual adult fares: station–Shirarahama JPY 340 each way, beach–Sandanbeki JPY 240 each way, and bus centre–Rinkai and Rinkai–Shirarahama JPY 150 each. Walking from your accommodation to the bus centre is assumed; check the actual address and route. These figures use the fare table revised on 8 April 2021 and linked from the official route page. Recheck fares for your date.

Adding regular cave admission of JPY 1,500 gives JPY 2,960. The digital three-day pass costs JPY 1,900, JPY 440 more than these six fares, and totals JPY 3,400 with the cave before discounts. Recompare if adding rides or attraction discounts. JR, accommodation, meals and boats are excluded. If the pass's official JPY 100 cave discount applies, the total is JPY 3,300, still JPY 340 more than individual fares plus regular admission at JPY 2,960.
