Wakayama travel: should I start with the mountains or the coast?

For one night, stay on Koyasan to see temple paintings and stone gardens, or choose Shirarahama’s white-sand beach followed by Sandanbeki cliffs the next day. Koyasan uses Nankai rail, cable car and mountain buses; the coast uses JR and local buses. For sea and waterfall scenery together, compare the four-night course moving from Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura.

Mountain temples or coastal scenery: which appeals to you?

Compare Kongobuji and Danjo Garan on Koyasan, Shirahama’s beach, Sandanbeki and Engetsuto, and Nachi Falls from Kii-Katsuura separately. Wakayama Castle keep, temple interiors, cave and paid viewpoint have different admission and reception conditions.

Itineraries by trip length

Use Nankai trains, cable car and mountain buses in the mountains, or JR and local buses along the coast. First decide between a Koyasan or Shirahama stay and a move from Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura. Late-arrival courses leave separate days for sightseeing.

2 days / 1 night

Give two Koyasan temples a day each, or split Shirahama beach and cliff visits. Short stays do not combine mountains and coast.

3 days / 2 nights

Visit the castle in Wakayama City before moving to Koyasan for a night, or stay two nights in one Shirahama property for separate beach, cliff and Engetsuto visits.

4 days / 3 nights

Choose two Koyasan nights followed by a final Wakayama City night. Compare three nights in Kii-Katsuura if you need late arrival and a weather spare day for the waterfall.

5 days / 4 nights

Split sea and waterfall visits with two Shirahama nights and two in Kii-Katsuura. For late first-day city arrival, two nights each in Wakayama City and Koyasan can separate sightseeing and return days.
