Which Yamagata attractions should you choose?
Walk along castle moats and stone walls at Kajo Park, or explore Bunshokan’s historic Western-style interiors. Choose Yamadera for a stone-step climb to the temple and viewpoints, and Zao for mountain views by ropeway. Kaminoyama Castle’s local history exhibitions and Kamo Aquarium’s jellyfish displays are outside Yamagata City; allow separate time for return travel.

Yamadera (Risshakuji)
Risshakuji Temple (Yamadera)宝珠山立石寺(山寺)
Visit Yamadera to climb stone steps, explore the temple and look out over the town below. The official guide gives 1,015 steps and about 90 minutes for the visit and descent. Allow around two to three hours with photos and rests.
- AdmissionAdmission costs ¥500 for junior high school students and older and ¥200 for children aged four and older. Mountain admission is payable in cash.
- HoursMountain admission hours are 08:00–16:00 from April to September, 08:00–15:30 in October and November, and 08:30–15:00 from December to March. In winter, the temple closes at 16:00, or earlier depending on the weather.
- Getting thereTake a JR Senzan Line train toward Sendai from Yamagata Station and get off at Yamadera. Walk about 10 minutes to the start of the temple steps. From the 登山口 sign, continue toward Konponchudo and the Basho statue to reach the Sanmon ticket gate. Walking within the grounds and ticket queues take additional time. Bring cash for the ¥500 admission at Sanmon. The official guide lists 1,015 steps and about 90 minutes for the visit and descent. Allow two to three hours with rests. Adult paper tickets for ordinary trains cost ¥260 each way, or ¥520 return. Limited-express and Shinkansen supplements are extra.

Bunshokan

Take time to explore Bunshokan’s historic Western-style interiors. Look for the stained glass on the stairs and the restored ceiling decoration in the auditorium.

- HoursBunshokan opens from 09:00 to 16:30. It is closed on the first and third Monday of each month, or the following day when that Monday is a public holiday, and from December 29 to January 3.
- Getting thereWalk about 30 minutes from Yamagata Station to the front entrance. Alternatively, take a regular bus via City Hall, get off at Shiyakusho-mae and walk about one minute.

Kajo Park
霞城公園
For a gentle walk, follow Kajo Park’s moats and stone walls. It is close to Yamagata Station, making it an option on arrival or before departure.
- AdmissionPark admission is free. Check charges for individual facilities inside separately.
- HoursThe park opens from 05:00 to 22:00 from April to October and from 05:30 to 22:00 from November to March. It opens year-round.
- Getting thereWalk about 10 minutes from Yamagata Station’s West Exit to the South Gate. From the East Exit, the walk to the East Otemon Gate takes about 15 minutes. Choose your station exit and park entrance together.

Zao Ropeway
蔵王ロープウェイ
Ride the Zao Ropeway for mountain views. From Zao Sanroku Station, take the Sanroku Line to Juhyo Kogen, then change to the Sancho Line for Jizo Sancho.
- AdmissionReturn fares to Jizo Sancho are ¥4,400 for junior high school students and older and ¥2,200 for elementary school children. Return fares only to Juhyo Kogen are ¥2,200 and ¥1,100 respectively.
- HoursThe Sanroku Line runs from 08:30 to 17:00 and the Sancho Line from 08:45 to 16:45. For a return trip to Jizo Sancho, the last uphill departure from Sanroku Station is 16:00. Weather may suspend services.
- Getting thereTake the Z90 bus to Zao Onsen from stand 1 in front of Yamagata Station and get off at the bus terminal. Walk about 10 minutes to Sanroku Station, then change at Juhyo Kogen for Jizo Sancho. This differs from the roughly five-minute walk to Onsen Station on the Zao Chuo Ropeway. Walking times come from the tourism association’s November 2025 map. From June 13 to November 3, 2026, the adult B Set Ticket costs ¥6,600 and includes return bus travel and the ropeway return to Jizo Sancho. Without the set ticket, the reference calculation is ¥1,200 × 2 for buses plus ¥4,400 for the ropeway, totaling ¥6,800. Check updated winter fares and services separately.

Kaminoyama Castle
上山城
Visit Kaminoyama Castle to explore the hot-spring town’s history and its surroundings. The current building houses a local history museum, with exhibitions and an observation deck overlooking the town.
- AdmissionAdmission costs ¥600 for adults, ¥500 for high school and university students, and ¥200 for elementary and junior high school students.
- HoursThe castle opens from 09:00 to 17:15, with last admission at 16:45. It is closed on Thursdays, or the preceding weekday when Thursday is a public holiday, and from December 29 to 31.
- Getting thereTake the JR Ou Main Line from Yamagata Station to Kaminoyama-Onsen, then follow the facility’s access map for the roughly seven-minute walk to the castle. Retrace your route after the visit and take a train toward Yamagata. Check outward and return services and fares for your date. Adult paper tickets for ordinary trains cost ¥260 each way, or ¥520 return. Limited-express and Shinkansen supplements are extra.

Kamo Aquarium
加茂水族館
Visit Kamo Aquarium to watch jellyfish moving in their tanks. It is on the Tsuruoka coast, so allow a full day for return bus travel and the visit from Yamagata City.

- HoursThe aquarium opens from 09:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:00. Check temporary closure notices for your date separately.
- Getting thereTake a highway bus toward Tsuruoka and Sakata from stand 1 in front of Yamagata Station to S-MALL Terminal. At S-MALL stand 1, change to a local bus to Yunohama Onsen via Kamo and get off at Kamo Suizokukan. Return by local bus to S-MALL, then change to a highway bus for Yamagata. Use the weekday or holiday timetables for your date and check both outward and return connections.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Zao Ropeway take me to Okama?
The Zao Ropeway alone does not take you to Okama. The Sancho Line ends at Jizo Sancho Station; Okama is elsewhere. To visit Okama, plan a separate itinerary around seasonal roads, other bus services and the walking route on your date.

Are Kajo Park and Bunshokan free to visit?
A regular park walk and general admission to Bunshokan are free. Individual facilities in the park and paid alternative transport are not included. Bunshokan closes on the first and third Monday of each month, or the following day when that Monday is a public holiday, so choose your date accordingly.

Can I pay for Yamadera admission by card?
Sanmon admission is ¥500 for junior high school students and older, or ¥200 for children aged four and older. The facility lists cash payment only. The inner sanctuary of Konponchudo and the treasure exhibition have separate charges.
