Four nights in Sendai and Miyagi: should you change accommodation?
Stay in Sendai for separate exhibition, temple and aquarium days, or move after two nights for two nights in Naruko Onsen. Naruko is a separate onsen area reached by changing trains at Kogota. For the gorge, check the autumn seasonal bus’s operating period and both journeys.
Choose a 5 days / 4 nights itinerary
City exhibitions and temples, then the aquarium
Keep the same Sendai accommodation for four nights, giving the former home, museum/castle site, Matsushima and mausoleum separate days. Add the final-day aquarium only if time remains afterwards to leave the region.

Day 1: Bansuisodo → Sendai accommodation
Bansuisodo · 晩翠草堂
Start with a short visit to poet Doi Bansui’s former home. Take Loople from Sendai Station West Exit stand 16 to Bansuisodo-mae, then use the Aoba-dori-side entrance with its stone marker. General admission is free, with hours of 09:00–17:00. Closed Mondays, or the next day if a public holiday, and 29 December–3 January.
Return to Sendai Station on Loople in the same direction. Even with a 20–30-minute visit, the return loop takes about an hour, so this is not a quick round trip. Two single bus fares total ¥600.

Take Loople from Sendai Station West Exit stand 16 to Bansuisodo-mae. Return services loop in the same direction too.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Naruko stay’s subtotal include JR return travel?

Required Sendai–Kogota–Naruko Onsen JR return travel is extra; search fares for your date. Accommodation, meals, access, luggage storage, airport and long-distance travel are excluded too.

Does the Naruko gorge bus run in other seasons?
Momiji-go is an autumn foliage bus. The currently checked 2026 period is 26 October–8 November. Do not assume the same bus in other seasons; check return access separately. It is cash-only and first come, first served; full buses or delays may prevent boarding at your chosen time.
Can I use the Sendai Area Pass from Sendai to Naruko Onsen?
Official covered JR routes are the designated sections between Sendai, Matsushima, Matsushima-Kaigan, Yamadera and Shiroishi. JR return travel via Kogota to Naruko Onsen and accommodation are separate from this itinerary’s area-pass cost. This is a different product from the wider JR EAST PASS; distinguish names and routes.
Sendai Area Pass: ¥1,420, passport eligibility and covered routes
Does one Sendai Area Pass cover a move to Yamagata accommodation?
The Senzan Line boundary is Yamadera, so one pass does not cover the whole route to Yamagata. Price the full journey with ordinary tickets or check an existing JR EAST PASS’s validity. For three nights in Sendai and one in Yamagata, return to Sendai on the Senzan Line on the final day. Accommodation and extra JR fares are excluded from the existing A/B subtotals.
