Should you change hotels during five days in Sendai and Miyagi?

Stay in Sendai for separate exhibitions, temples and aquarium visits, or move after two Sendai nights for two nights in Naruko Onsen. Naruko is a separate hot-spring destination requiring a Kogota train change. For the gorge, check autumn seasonal-bus dates and both services.

Day 1 — Bansuisodo → Sendai hotel

Bansuisodo · 晩翠草堂

Begin with a short exhibition visit at poet Doi Bansui’s former home. Take Loople from Sendai Station west-exit stop 16 to Bansuisodo-mae and enter by the stone marker facing Aoba-dori. Ordinary admission is free; hours are 09:00–17:00. Closed Mondays (the next day if a public holiday) and 29 December–3 January.

Return to Sendai Station in the same loop direction. Although the house visit takes about 20–30 minutes, the return loop takes about an hour; this is not a short round trip. Two single bus rides cost JPY 600.

Explore Zuiganji’s ornate main hall and Entsuin’s garden. Take the Senseki Line for about 40 minutes to Matsushima-Kaigan, a different station from Tohoku Main Line Matsushima. Walk about ten minutes to Zuiganji for architecture and exhibitions, then continue to nearby Entsuin. Allow separate time for each facility’s entry/ticketing and meals.

Can I use the Sendai area pass to Naruko Onsen?

Official covered JR sections link Sendai, Matsushima, Matsushima-Kaigan, Yamadera and Shiroishi within the designated area. Return JR via Kogota to Naruko Onsen and hotels are outside the itinerary’s area-pass costs. It differs from the wider JR EAST PASS; distinguish product names and coverage.

Sendai area pass: JPY 1,420, passport eligibility and coverage

Can one Sendai area pass cover a hotel move to Yamagata?

The Senzan Line boundary is Yamadera, so one pass does not cover the whole journey to Yamagata Station. Calculate the whole trip with ordinary tickets or check an existing JR East Pass’s validity. With three Sendai nights and one Yamagata night, return to Sendai on the Senzan Line on the final day. Hotels and additional rail fares are excluded from existing A/B partial subtotals.
