Where should you stay and what should you see in Sendai and Miyagi?
Stay near Sendai Station to give Sendai city and Matsushima a day each. For Date history and architecture, choose the museum, Zuihoden and castle site; for ornate temple interiors and gardens, choose Matsushima. See Sanriku marine life at Uminomori Aquarium. For Naruko hot springs, compare two nights in Sendai followed by two in Naruko Onsen.
More time for history, the sea or hot springs?
Explore Sendai for Date Masamune’s mausoleum, castle views and Date clan collections. Choose Matsushima for leisurely main-hall and garden visits, or Uminomori Aquarium for Sanriku marine life. For Naruko gorge walks and baths, split hotel nights with Sendai and change trains at Kogota.
Itineraries by trip length
First choose whether to keep one Sendai hotel for city and Matsushima days or move to Naruko for hot springs. Each card gives day-by-day journeys, return routes and included costs.
1 night, 2 days
Choose history and Matsushima temples or the aquarium and museum. A late first-day arrival or morning day-two departure makes sightseeing on both days difficult.
2 nights, 3 days
Give the city, Matsushima and aquarium a day each, or replace the aquarium with more museum, mausoleum and garden time. Final-day sightseeing requires time to return to Sendai Station before departure.
3 nights, 4 days
Explore the museum, mausoleum, castle site, Matsushima and aquarium. For fewer stairs, compare route B’s Bansuisodo, Entsuin and indoor exhibitions instead of the mausoleum and castle.
4 nights, 5 days
Stay four Sendai nights for separate exhibitions and temple visits, or two Sendai nights followed by two in Naruko Onsen. Route B’s gorge bus requires that year’s autumn operating period.
Hotel and transport bases
Sendai Station area
Stay near Sendai Station for separate days visiting city history, Matsushima and the aquarium. Check the walk from your hotel to west-exit stop 16 for Loople and the Senseki Line platforms. Five-day itinerary B changes hotels to Naruko Onsen; arrange the connection at Kogota and hotel arrival time before booking.

Matsushima · 松島 (near Matsushima-Kaigan Station)
Consider staying near Matsushima-Kaigan Station for a day by the sea. Matsushima is a coastal destination reached by train from Sendai. JR Matsushima and Matsushima-Kaigan are different stations; check which serves your hotel and onward access. Meal inclusions vary by hotel.

Naruko Onsen · 鳴子温泉 (near the station · final two nights)
After two nights in Sendai, spend two in Naruko Onsen, giving the gorge walk and Takinoyu bath separate days. Check return JR journeys via Kogota and seasonal gorge buses for your actual dates. Match hotel walking/shuttle access, check-in and dinner conditions to your booking. Hotels and hotel-access costs are excluded from this route’s partial subtotal.

Choosing meals and transport tickets
Choosing gyutan in Sendai
Consider grilled gyutan for a meal in Sendai. Before leaving the city, choose near the station; for dinner after sightseeing, choose along the hotel-return route. Booking lunch in Sendai on a Matsushima day reduces sightseeing time. Meals are excluded from itinerary partial subtotals. Check current prices and closed days with your chosen restaurant.
Compare Loople and JR for your travel dates
Loople adult fares are JPY 300 per ride or JPY 700 for a day pass. Two rides cost JPY 600; compare conditions for three rides or facility discounts. The Sendai area pass costs JPY 1,420 per adult day and requires a valid passport issued outside Japan for purchase/use. For Matsushima and Nakanosakae on different days, a separate day pass is needed each day if using passes. It is not always cheaper than individual JR return tickets. Buy it at Sendai Station’s third-floor JR EAST Travel Service Center or passport-reading reserved-seat machines. Naruko return JR is outside the listed pass costs; aquarium admission and paid connecting buses are separate too.

Use Loople for Sendai history and the Senseki Line for Matsushima’s coast. Naruko Onsen requires a Kogota train change; allow separate time for a hot-spring stay and gorge walk.
Sendai Station and Bansuisodo
Consider Bansuisodo for a short exhibition visit and meals near the station. Loople and ordinary city-bus stops may share a name but have different entrance approaches. The Loople return runs one way around the loop, so this is not a short round trip.

Sendai history sights
Use a Loople day for Zuihoden and the castle, or focus on the museum for indoor history. Mausoleum stairs and castle-hill walking differ from exhibition visits; choose according to your group’s walking capacity.

Matsushima temples and gardens
Use Matsushima-Kaigan as your base for walks to Zuiganji and Entsuin in the coastal area. Tohoku Main Line Matsushima is a different station with a longer temple walk. For an evening on the coast, decide whether to return to Sendai or stay in Matsushima.

Nakanosakae and Uminomori Aquarium
Take the Senseki Line from Sendai to Nakanosakae for the aquarium. Walk about 15 minutes or use the paid connecting bus. It is not a free shuttle and is separate from aquarium admission.

Final two nights in Naruko Onsen
For a trip centred on hot-spring stays, compare five-day route B’s move to Naruko after Sendai. Travel via Kogota on the Rikuu East Line. Arrange seasonal gorge buses and hotel access separately. Naruko return JR fares are outside the Sendai area-pass cost.
