Sendai and Miyagi: where should I stay, and what should I see?

Stay near Sendai Station to see the city and Matsushima on separate days. Choose the museum, Zuihoden and castle site for Date family history and architecture, or Matsushima for ornate temple interiors and gardens. Uminomori Aquarium features Sanriku marine life. For hot-spring time in Naruko, compare the plan with two nights in Sendai followed by two in Naruko Onsen.

History, the sea or hot springs: what would you like to see?

Explore Sendai for Date Masamune’s mausoleum architecture, castle views and Date family exhibits. Choose Matsushima for ornate temple interiors and leisurely garden visits, or Uminomori Aquarium for Sanriku marine life. For Naruko gorge walks and hot springs, divide your accommodation between Sendai and Naruko, changing trains at Kogota.

Itineraries by trip length

First choose between one Sendai base with separate city and Matsushima days, or a move to Naruko for hot springs. Each card shows daily travel, the return journey and included costs.

2 days / 1 night

Choose history and Matsushima temples, or the aquarium and museum. Late arrival on day one or departure on the second morning makes sightseeing on both days difficult.

3 days / 2 nights

Spend separate days in the city, Matsushima and aquarium, or replace the aquarium with museum, mausoleum and garden time. Last-day sightseeing needs enough time to return to Sendai Station before departure.

4 days / 3 nights

See the museum, mausoleum, castle site, Matsushima and aquarium. For fewer stairs, compare course B, which replaces the mausoleum and castle with Bansuisodo, Entsuin and indoor exhibitions on separate days.

5 days / 4 nights

Stay four nights in Sendai for exhibitions and temples, or two nights in Sendai followed by two in Naruko Onsen. Course B uses Naruko’s gorge bus and must fit that year’s autumn operating period.

Choose meals and transport tickets

Choosing a gyutan meal in Sendai

Grilled gyutan is one meal option in Sendai. Choose near the station before leaving the city, or along the route back to your accommodation for dinner after sightseeing. Booking lunch in Sendai on your Matsushima day reduces time there. Meals are excluded from the itinerary’s partial subtotals. Check current prices and closures with your chosen restaurant.

Compare Loople and JR options for each travel day

Loople Sendai costs JPY 300 per adult ride or JPY 700 for a day pass. Two ordinary rides cost JPY 600; compare pass conditions for three rides or facility discounts. The one-day Sendai Area Pass costs JPY 1,420 for adults and requires a valid non-Japanese passport at purchase and use. If you use a pass for Matsushima or Nakano-Sakae on different days, you need a separate one-day pass for each date. It is not always cheaper than individual JR return tickets. Buy it at the JR EAST Travel Service Center on Level 3 of Sendai Station or a designated reserved-seat ticket machine with passport-reading capability. JR travel to and from Naruko is separate from the pass costs in these itineraries; aquarium admission and paid connecting buses are also extra.

How should I divide my time between Sendai, the coast and hot springs?

Use Loople for Sendai’s historic sights and the Senseki Line for Matsushima. Naruko Onsen requires a train change at Kogota, so allow separate time for hot-spring accommodation and a gorge walk.

Sendai Station and Bansuisodo

Consider Bansuisodo for a short exhibition visit and a meal near the station. Loople and ordinary city-bus stops can share a name but have different approaches to the entrance. Loople returns in one loop direction; this is not a short out-and-back ride.

Sendai’s historic sights

Plan a Loople day for Zuihoden and the castle site, or focus on the museum for indoor history exhibits. Mausoleum stairs and the castle’s uphill approach add different demands from museum sightseeing; consider your companions’ walking needs.

Matsushima temples and gardens

Walk from Matsushima-Kaigan to Zuiganji and Entsuin for coastal-area temples and gardens. Matsushima Station on the Tohoku Main Line is a different station with a longer walk. For an evening by the coast, decide whether to return to Sendai or stay in Matsushima.

Uminomori Aquarium: approximately 18 minutes by JR, walking route and JPY 200 bus

Two nights in Naruko Onsen to finish your trip

For a trip focused on a hot-spring stay, compare the five-day B plan, moving to Naruko after Sendai. Travel via Kogota on the Rikuu East Line. Arrange the seasonal gorge bus and accommodation access separately. Return JR travel to Naruko is separate from the Sendai Area Pass costs.
