Four days in Sendai and Miyagi: where would you like more time?

Choose the history-and-temple itinerary for Date Masamune’s mausoleum, Sendai Castle Site, Zuiganji’s main hall and Entsuin’s gardens. If Zuihoden and castle stairs are difficult, split Bansuisodo, the aquarium, Entsuin and museum across separate days. This alternative still involves station-to-facility walks and garden sightseeing; check the walking involved.

Sendai history, Matsushima and aquarium

Explore Date family exhibits, mausoleum architecture and castle views, Matsushima temples, and the aquarium on separate days. Start with the museum, followed by the mausoleum and castle site.

Day 1 · Museum

Explore material from the Date family at Sendai City Museum to learn about Date Masamune and the city’s history. Take Loople from Sendai Station’s West Exit stop 16 to Museum/International Center/Ryokusaikan-mae, then walk about three minutes. Return to the same stop after visiting the permanent exhibition.

Continue in the same loop direction to Sendai Station. Two rides at JPY 300 each plus JPY 460 permanent-exhibition admission for adults and university students give a subtotal of JPY 1,060. Special exhibitions cost extra. These regular prices do not use a day-pass discount.

The museum opens 09:00–16:45, with last admission at 16:15. Monday and post-public-holiday closures have exceptions; check the official calendar. Recalculate admission costs for free-admission days or closures.

Loople Sendai: 20-minute weekday timetable except August; 15 minutes on weekends, public holidays and throughout August; JPY 300/700 fares

Swap viewing days around museum closures. If exhibitions take longer, reduce extra sightseeing and allow station-return time.

Day 2 · Mausoleum and castle site

Visit Zuihoden for Date family mausoleum architecture. Take Loople Sendai from Sendai Station’s West Exit stop 16 to Zuihoden-mae. Walk about seven minutes to the ticket office, climbing roughly 80 steps along the approach. After seeing the mausoleum and historical museum, descend to the same bus stop.

Continue in the same loop direction to Sendai Castle Site. Climb to Honmaru for the statue and city views, then descend to the same stop. Walking around the castle site is free; separate exhibition facilities are excluded. Choose just one sight if climbing and descending stairs at both is too demanding.

Show your same-day Loople pass before paying. Discounted Zuihoden admission for adults and university students is JPY 460; with the JPY 700 bus pass, the subtotal is JPY 1,160. Regular admission is JPY 570. Last admission is 16:30 in February–November and 16:00 in December–January. All areas are closed on 31 December; only Zuihoden opens on 1 January. Return to Sendai Station in the same loop direction.

If stairs or closures mean skipping the mausoleum, recalculate admission and the bus rides you will take.

Day 3 · Matsushima

Explore Zuiganji’s ornate main hall and Entsuin’s gardens. Take the Senseki Line for about 40 minutes to Matsushima-Kaigan, a different station from Matsushima on the Tohoku Main Line. Walk about ten minutes to Zuiganji for its architecture and exhibits, then continue to nearby Entsuin. Allow extra time for ticket purchase, entry and meals.

Entsuin closes at 16:00 in April–November and 15:30 in December–March. If lunch runs late, visit the gardens first. Shorten the coastal walk in strong winds and return to Sendai from Matsushima-Kaigan. Temple admission of JPY 1,500 plus the JPY 1,420 Area Pass gives a subtotal of JPY 2,920.

  1. Sendai Station → JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station

Take a JR Senseki Line train stopping at Matsushima-Kaigan, about 40 minutes from Sendai. This differs from Tohoku Main Line Matsushima; check where to alight.

Matsushima Tourism Association: Senseki Line direction and approximately 40-minute journey

If both temples are too much, choose one. Without pass eligibility, recalculate using individual JR tickets for your journeys.

Day 4 · Aquarium and departure

Explore Sanriku marine life in Uminomori’s large tank, alongside exhibits from Japan and around the world. Take a Senseki Line train that stops at Nakano-Sakae; the ride takes about 18 minutes. From the South Exit, walk about 15 minutes via National Route 45 and the Debana junction shown on the official access map.

Allow a suggested two to three hours for exhibits and rests, checking opening hours and last admission for your date. Return to the same station for a Sendai-bound train. Adult admission of JPY 2,400 plus an eligible JPY 1,420 Area Pass gives a subtotal of JPY 3,820. Taking the connecting bus both ways adds JPY 400.

On departure day, allow time to return to the station. Skip sightseeing if there is too little time before your onward journey.
