Which Yamagata sights would you like to see?
Walk beside castle moats and walls in Kajo Park or explore old Western-style decoration at Bunshokan. Choose Yamadera for temple stairs and views or Zao for ropeway mountain scenery. Kaminoyama Castle’s local-history exhibits and Kamo Aquarium’s jellyfish are outside Yamagata city; allow separate return travel time.

Yamadera (Risshakuji)
Risshakuji Temple (Yamadera)宝珠山立石寺(山寺)
Visit Yamadera to climb stone stairs to the temple and look down over the village. Official guidance lists 1,015 steps and about 90 minutes return. Allow a suggested two to three hours with photos and rests.
- AdmissionAdmission costs JPY 500 for visitors of junior high-school age and older, and JPY 200 for children aged four and older. Temple admission must be paid in cash.
- HoursAdmission is from 08:00 to 16:00 in April–September, from 08:00 to 15:30 in October–November and from 08:30 to 15:00 in December–March. Winter closing is 16:00, with possible earlier closure for weather.
- DirectionsTake a JR Senzan Line train from Yamagata towards Sendai and alight at Yamadera. Walk about ten minutes to the stair entrance. From 登山口, climb towards Konponchudo and the Basho statue to Sanmon’s ticket office; this internal walk and ticket queues are extra. Pay JPY 500 Sanmon admission in cash. Add rests to the official return visit involving 1,015 steps and taking about 90 minutes for a suggested two to three hours. Ordinary adult paper tickets cost JPY 260 each way or JPY 520 return; limited-express and Shinkansen travel needs supplements.

Bunshokan

Take time to explore Bunshokan’s old Western-style building and interior decoration. Look at the staircase’s stained glass and restored auditorium ceiling.

- HoursBunshokan opens from 09:00 to 16:30. It is closed on the first and third Mondays of each month (the following day if Monday is a public holiday) and from 29 December to 3 January.
- DirectionsWalk about 30 minutes from Yamagata Station to the front entrance. Ordinary buses via City Hall stop at Shiyakusho-mae, a one-minute walk away.

Kajo Park
霞城公園
For a relaxed walk, follow Kajo Park’s castle moats and stone walls. Near Yamagata Station, it can fit arrival day or time before departure.
- AdmissionPark walks are free. Check charges for individual facilities inside separately.
- HoursKajo Park opens daily from 05:00 to 22:00 in April–October and from 05:30 to 22:00 in November–March.
- DirectionsWalk about ten minutes from Yamagata Station’s West Exit to the South Gate, or 15 minutes from the East Exit to the East Otemon Gate. Choose your exit and park entrance together.

Zao Ropeway

Choose Zao for mountain views from a ropeway. Travel from Zao Sanroku to Juhyo Kogen, then change to the Sancho Line for Jizo Sancho Station.
- AdmissionReturn fares to Jizo Sancho are JPY 4,400 for visitors of junior high-school age and older, and JPY 2,200 for primary students. Return fares to Juhyo Kogen only are JPY 2,200 and JPY 1,100 respectively.
- HoursThe Sanroku Line operates from 08:30 to 17:00 and the Sancho Line from 08:45 to 16:45. The last uphill departure from Sanroku for a summit return is at 16:00. Services may stop for weather.
- DirectionsTake the Z90 Zao Onsen bus from stop 1 outside Yamagata Station to the terminal. Walk about ten minutes to Sanroku, then change at Juhyo Kogen for Jizo Sancho. Distinguish this from the five-minute walk to Central Ropeway’s Onsen Station. Walking guidance is from the tourism association’s November 2025 map. The JPY 6,600 adult B set ticket for 13 June–3 November 2026 includes return buses and the Jizo Sancho return. Without it, the reference calculation is JPY 1,200 bus fares × 2 plus JPY 4,400 ropeways: JPY 6,800. Check newer winter fares and operation separately.

Kaminoyama Castle
上山城
Visit Kaminoyama Castle for hot-spring-town history and surrounding views. The present building is a local history museum; explore its exhibits and look out from the observation deck.

- HoursKaminoyama Castle opens from 09:00 to 17:15, with last admission at 16:45. Kaminoyama Castle is closed on Thursdays (the preceding weekday if Thursday is a public holiday) and from 29 to 31 December.
- DirectionsTake the JR Ou Main Line from Yamagata to Kaminoyama-Onsen and follow the facility access map for an approximately seven-minute castle walk. Retrace the route after visiting and return by a Yamagata-bound train. Search return services and fares for your date. Kamo Aquarium

Visit Kamo Aquarium for a close look at moving jellyfish. On Tsuruoka’s coast, it needs a full day for return bus travel and sightseeing from Yamagata city.

Change at S-Mall stop 1 to a Yunohama Onsen local bus via Kamo and alight at Kamo Aquarium. Return by local bus to S-Mall, then change to the Yamagata highway bus. Does Zao Ropeway take me to Okama?
No. The Sancho Line ends at Jizo Sancho Station, a different place from Okama. For Okama, prepare a separate itinerary matching seasonal roads, other buses and on-site walking routes for your date.

Are the city park and Bunshokan free?
Ordinary Kajo Park walks and Bunshokan admission are free. Individual park facilities and paid alternative transport are excluded. Bunshokan closes first and third Mondays, or the next day if Monday is a public holiday; choose your date accordingly.

Can I pay Yamadera admission by card?
Sanmon admission is JPY 500 for junior high-school age and older or JPY 200 for children aged four and older. The facility lists cash payment only. Konponchudo inner-sanctuary visits and the treasure hall have separate charges.
