Which Yamagata attractions would you like to visit?
Choose Kajo Park for walks along the moat and stone walls, or Bunshokan for historic Western-style decoration. Climb Yamadera for temple views or ride Zao’s ropeways for mountain scenery. Kaminoyama Castle and Kamo Aquarium are outside Yamagata city, so allow separate time for the return journey.

Yamadera (Risshakuji)
Risshakuji Temple (Yamadera)宝珠山立石寺(山寺)
Visit Yamadera to climb stone stairs, explore the temple and look over the town below. Official guidance gives 1,015 steps and about 90 minutes return. Allow two to three hours with photos and rests.
- AdmissionAdmission costs JPY 500 for visitors of junior high school age and above, and JPY 200 for children aged four and above. Payment is in cash.
- HoursAdmission hours are 08:00–16:00 in April–September, 08:00–15:30 in October–November and 08:30–15:00 in December–March. Winter gate closing is at 16:00, but weather may cause earlier closure.
- Getting thereTake a Sendai-bound JR Senzan Line train from Yamagata to Yamadera. Walk about ten minutes to the worship-stair entrance. From the 登山口 sign, climb towards Konponchudo and Basho’s statue to Sanmon’s ticket office. Allow extra time for walking within the grounds and ticket queues. Sanmon admission costs JPY 500, payable in cash. Official guidance gives 1,015 steps and about 90 minutes for the return temple walk; allow two to three hours with rests. Ordinary adult paper tickets cost JPY 260 each way, or JPY 520 return. Limited-express and Shinkansen travel cost extra.

Bunshokan

Take time to explore Bunshokan’s historic Western-style interiors. Look at the staircase stained glass and restored auditorium ceiling decoration.

- HoursBunshokan opens from 09:00 to 16:30. It closes on the first and third Mondays, or the following day when these are public holidays, and on 29 December–3 January.
- Getting thereWalk about 30 minutes from Yamagata Station to the main entrance. On an ordinary bus via city hall, alight at Shiyakusho-mae and walk about one minute.

Kajo Park
霞城公園
For an easy walk, follow Kajo Park’s castle moat and stone walls. It is near Yamagata Station, making it an option on arrival or before departure.
- AdmissionPark admission is free. Check fees for individual facilities separately.
- HoursThe park opens from 05:00 to 22:00 in April–October, and from 05:30 to 22:00 in November–March. It is open year-round.
- Getting thereWalk about ten minutes from Yamagata Station’s west exit to the south gate. The east-exit walk to East Otemon takes about 15 minutes; choose the exit and park gate together.

Zao Ropeway
蔵王ロープウェイ
Choose Zao for mountain views by ropeway. Ride from Zao Sanroku to Juhyo Kogen, then change to the Sancho Line for Jizo Sancho.
- AdmissionReturn tickets to Jizo Sancho cost JPY 4,400 for visitors of junior high school age and above, and JPY 2,200 for primary school pupils. For a return trip only as far as Juhyo Kogen, these groups pay JPY 2,200 and JPY 1,100 respectively.
- HoursThe Sanroku Line operates from 08:30 to 17:00, and the Sancho Line from 08:45 to 16:45. For a return trip to the summit, the last uphill departure from Sanroku is at 16:00. Weather may suspend operation.
- Getting thereTake Z90 towards Zao Onsen from Yamagata Station stop 1 to the bus terminal. Walk about ten minutes to Sanroku, change at Juhyo Kogen and continue to Jizo Sancho. Distinguish it from the five-minute walk to Chuo Ropeway Onsen Station. Walking guidance uses the tourism association’s November 2025 map. The adult JPY 6,600 B set ticket for 13 June–3 November 2026 includes return buses and Jizo Sancho ropeways. Without the set, reference costs are JPY 1,200 × 2 buses + JPY 4,400 ropeways = JPY 6,800. Kaminoyama Castle
上山城
Visit Kaminoyama Castle for hot-spring town history and views of its surroundings. The present building is a local-history museum; explore its exhibitions and observation deck.
- AdmissionAdmission costs JPY 600 for adults, JPY 500 for high school and university students and JPY 200 for primary and junior high school pupils.
- HoursThe castle opens from 09:00 to 17:15, with last entry at 16:45. It closes on Thursdays, or the preceding weekday when Thursday is a public holiday, and on 29–31 December.
- Getting thereTake the JR Ou Main Line from Yamagata to Kaminoyama Onsen, then follow the facility access map for a roughly seven-minute castle walk. Retrace your route after visiting and take a Yamagata-bound train. Search both services and fares for your actual date. Ordinary adult paper fares are JPY 260 each way/JPY 520 return; limited-express/Shinkansen travel costs extra.

Kamo Aquarium
加茂水族館
Visit Kamo Aquarium to see jellyfish moving through the water up close. It is on Tsuruoka’s coast; from Yamagata city, allow a full day for return buses and viewing.

- HoursThe aquarium opens from 09:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:00. Check temporary closure notices for your date separately.
- Getting thereTake a highway bus towards Tsuruoka or Sakata from Yamagata Station stop 1 to S-Mall Terminal. Change at S-Mall stop 1 to a Yunohama Onsen-bound local bus via Kamo and get off at Kamo Suizokukan. Return by local bus to S-Mall, then change to a Yamagata-bound highway bus. Check weekday and holiday timetables and connections in both directions for your date.

Frequently asked questions
Does Zao Ropeway also take me to Okama?
The ropeway alone does not reach Okama. The Sancho Line ends at Jizo Sancho; Okama is elsewhere. Prepare a separate itinerary matching seasonal roads, separate buses and on-site walking routes for your date.

Are the city park and Bunshokan free?
Ordinary Kajo Park walks and Bunshokan visits are free. Individual park facilities and paid alternative transport are excluded. Bunshokan closes on the first and third Mondays, or the following day when these are public holidays. Check that it is open on your date.

Can I pay Yamadera admission by card?
Sanmon admission is JPY 500 for junior-high age and above and JPY 200 for children aged four and above. The facility lists cash payment only. Konponchudo’s inner sanctuary and the treasure hall have separate fees.
