Where would you spend day two of three days in Yamagata?
Give Zao a day for mountain views by ropeway, or Kamo a day for jellyfish. Check Zao B’s period and ropeway operation; for Kamo, match both return bus connections through Tsuruoka.
Choose a 2 nights, 3 days itinerary
A Zao mountain-view day between city walks
Add a Zao mountain-view day between the park and Bunshokan. Use buses and two ropeways; check the B set ticket’s official validity period. This is not a winter snow-monster itinerary.
A Zao mountain-view day between city walks →2 nights, 3 days BA jellyfish aquarium day between city walks
Add a jellyfish aquarium day between the park and Bunshokan. Return from your Yamagata Station base via Tsuruoka; choose this only if you can devote a full day to long bus rides and connection waits.

Day 1 — Kajo Park → Yamagata accommodation
Spend the day on an easy park walk among castle remains near Yamagata Station. Walk about ten minutes from the west exit to Kajo Park’s south gate. Explore at leisure, leave by the same gate and retrace your route to the station.
Ordinary park walks are free; individual paid facilities are excluded. April–October hours are 05:00–22:00; November–March hours are 05:30–22:00. In strong wind or rain, shorten the walk and eat near the station.

The walk from the east exit to East Otemon Gate takes about 15 minutes. This itinerary instead uses the west exit and south gate.
Day 2 — Bus → Zao Ropeway → return to Yamagata
Ride the ropeways to Jizo Sancho Station for Zao’s mountain scenery. First buy a B set ticket at the bus information office in front of Yamagata Station, then take Z90 towards Zao Onsen from east-exit stop 1. The adult JPY 6,600 B ticket for 13 June–3 November 2026 includes return buses and both ropeways to Jizo Sancho. It is not sold aboard buses or at other counters and differs from the Chuo Ropeway A ticket. On 4 November only the return bus remains valid.
Walk about ten minutes from the terminal to Zao Ropeway Sanroku Station. Ride the Sanroku Line to Juhyo Kogen, then change to the Sancho Line for Jizo Sancho. Do not confuse this with the roughly five-minute walk to Chuo Ropeway Onsen Station. Allow about two to three hours for both return ropeway sections, changes and views; check queues and suspensions separately. Okama hiking is excluded.
Descend on the Sancho then Sanroku lines, walk about ten minutes back to the terminal and take C2 to Yamagata Station. Choose a return bus first and allow time to descend both sections. Eat lunch after descending, or in Yamagata if time is short. Do not add the JPY 4,400 ropeway return fare again to the B ticket. Baths, meals, hotels and JR on other days cost extra.
Without a set ticket, the reference calculation is JPY 1,200 × 2 buses plus JPY 4,400 return ropeways = JPY 6,800. The bus fare comes from the operator’s foreign-language guidance; check new guidance for current winter fares and operation on your date.
- Yamagata Station east exit → station-front bus information office → stop 1 → Zao Onsen Bus Terminal
Buy an eligible B set ticket at Yamagata Station’s bus information office, then board Z90 towards Zao Onsen at east-exit stop 1. Set tickets are not sold aboard buses or at other counters.

Strong wind, suspension or full buses may prevent the planned return trip. Refunds for suspended ropeways are handled at the sales counter; used bus fares are not refunded and A/B tickets cannot be exchanged on site.
Day 3 — Bunshokan → Yamagata Station → depart
Take time to examine Bunshokan’s stained glass and restored auditorium decoration. Walk about 30 minutes from Yamagata Station to the main entrance. Admission is free; allow about 60–90 minutes inside. Retrace the same 30-minute route to the station and eat afterwards.
Bunshokan opens 09:00–16:30. It closes on the first and third Mondays, or the following day when these are public holidays, and 29 December–3 January. If using a bus via city hall, check its route, timetable and fare separately for your date.
On departure day, allow time back to the station too. Omit this visit if there is insufficient time before onward travel.

Day 2 — Change at Tsuruoka S-Mall → Kamo Aquarium → return to Yamagata
Devote a day to Kamo Aquarium’s jellyfish displays. Take a Tsuruoka/Sakata-bound highway bus from Yamagata Station stop 1 and alight at S-Mall Terminal. Change at S-Mall stop 1 to a Yunohama Onsen-bound local bus via Kamo. Services via Zenpoji do not stop at the aquarium, so check the route.
Alight at Kamo Suizokukan and enter the facility. Allow time for exhibitions, lunch and rests, then return to the same stop before your bus. Aquarium hours are 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:00; restaurant guidance lists 11:00–15:00. Check menus and that day’s last orders on site. No additional coastal attraction is included.
Return by local bus to S-Mall and change to a Yamagata-bound highway bus. Both return journeys and waits make this a long day; choose connections from both timetables before leaving. Two ordinary highway fares of JPY 2,600, two local fares of JPY 840 and JPY 1,500 adult admission total JPY 8,380. No multi-ride discount is applied.
