How would you spend the middle two days of four days in Yamagata?

Choose Yamadera and Zao for temple stairs and views on one day and ropeway mountain scenery on another. For jellyfish instead of temples, give Zao and Kamo a day each. Both itineraries require checking Zao B’s period and ropeway operation.

Day 1 — Kajo Park

Spend the day on an easy park walk among castle remains near Yamagata Station. Walk about ten minutes from the west exit to Kajo Park’s south gate. Explore at leisure, leave by the same gate and retrace your route to the station.

Ordinary park walks are free; individual paid facilities are excluded. April–October hours are 05:00–22:00; November–March hours are 05:30–22:00. In strong wind or rain, shorten the walk and eat near the station.

The walk from the east exit to East Otemon Gate takes about 15 minutes. This itinerary instead uses the west exit and south gate.

Day 2 — Yamadera

Climb Yamadera’s stone stairs to visit the temple and look out over the valley from Godaido. Take a Sendai-bound JR Senzan Line train from Yamagata to Yamadera Station. Walk about ten minutes to the worship-stair entrance, then climb towards Konponchudo and Basho’s statue to the Sanmon ticket office. The ten-minute station walk excludes movement within the grounds and ticket queues. Sanmon admission is JPY 500 for junior-high age and above, payable in cash.

Continue towards Okunoin and Godaido, then descend. Official guidance lists 1,015 steps and about 90 minutes for the return temple walk; allow two to three hours with photos and rests. From the descent exit, follow the 2025 tourism-association map and on-site signs through the temple-front shops to the station. Do not rush down the stairs. If the visit runs long, eat lunch after returning or choose a later train.

Return from Yamadera on a Yamagata-bound Senzan train. Admission hours are 08:00–15:30 in October–November and 08:30–15:00 in December–March; weather may cause earlier closure. Ordinary adult train fares are JPY 260 each way, or JPY 520 return, included in the partial subtotal. Check train times for your date separately. The treasure hall and Konponchudo inner sanctuary each cost an extra JPY 200.

  1. Yamagata Station → Yamadera Station

Take a Sendai-bound JR Senzan Line train from Yamagata to Yamadera. Search outward and return services and fares together for your date. An ordinary adult paper ticket is JPY 260 one-way; JPY 520 return is included in the itinerary cost. Limited-express and Shinkansen supplements are extra.

If stairs are difficult or there is snow, ice or an on-site restriction, choose Bunshokan or Kajo Park instead of the mountain temple visit.

Day 3 — Zao Ropeway

Ride the ropeways to Jizo Sancho Station for Zao’s mountain scenery. First buy a B set ticket at the bus information office in front of Yamagata Station, then take Z90 towards Zao Onsen from east-exit stop 1. The adult JPY 6,600 B ticket for 13 June–3 November 2026 includes return buses and both ropeways to Jizo Sancho. It is not sold aboard buses or at other counters and differs from the Chuo Ropeway A ticket. On 4 November only the return bus remains valid.

Walk about ten minutes from the terminal to Zao Ropeway Sanroku Station. Ride the Sanroku Line to Juhyo Kogen, then change to the Sancho Line for Jizo Sancho. Do not confuse this with the roughly five-minute walk to Chuo Ropeway Onsen Station. Allow about two to three hours for both return ropeway sections, changes and views; check queues and suspensions separately. Okama hiking is excluded.

Descend on the Sancho then Sanroku lines, walk about ten minutes back to the terminal and take C2 to Yamagata Station. Choose a return bus first and allow time to descend both sections. Eat lunch after descending, or in Yamagata if time is short. Do not add the JPY 4,400 ropeway return fare again to the B ticket. Baths, meals, hotels and JR on other days cost extra.

Without a set ticket, the reference calculation is JPY 1,200 × 2 buses plus JPY 4,400 return ropeways = JPY 6,800. The bus fare comes from the operator’s foreign-language guidance; check new guidance for current winter fares and operation on your date.
