Where should you visit in Sendai and Matsushima?
Choose Zuihoden and Sendai Castle Site for Date Masamune’s mausoleum architecture and city views, or Sendai City Museum for Date collections. Uminomori Aquarium has Sanriku marine life; Matsushima offers an ornate main hall and contrasting gardens. Naruko’s Takinoyu is a public bath visited separately during a hot-spring stay.

Sendai Castle Site

Climb to Sendai Castle Site for views over the city and a close look at Date Masamune’s statue at Honmaru. This is a castle-site walk with city views rather than a keep-interior visit.
- AdmissionThe castle site is free to visit. Separate facilities such as Honmaru Kaikan are excluded.
- HoursThe castle site is always open. Separate exhibitions have their own hours.
- Getting thereTake Loople from Sendai Station west-exit stop 16 to stop 6, Sendai Castle Site. After leaving the bus, climb the stairs to Honmaru’s Date Masamune statue and viewpoint. Allow time for walking, stairs and sightseeing in addition to bus travel. Return in the same loop direction.

Zuihoden
Zuihoden Mausoleum瑞鳳殿
Visit Zuihoden for a close look at Date Masamune’s ornate mausoleum. Choose a day when you are comfortable with the woodland approach and worship-path stairs.
- AdmissionAdmission costs JPY 570 for adults and university students, JPY 410 for high school pupils and JPY 210 for primary and junior high school pupils.
- HoursZuihoden opens from 09:00 to 16:50 in February–November, with last entry at 16:30. In December–January, it opens from 09:00 to 16:20, with last entry at 16:00. It closes on 31 December. On 1 January, only Zuihoden opens; Kansenden, Zennoden and the historical museum close.
- Getting thereAlight at Loople’s Zuihoden-mae and climb the approach. There are around 80 steps to the entrance and another 30 within the grounds. From Tozai Line Omachi-Nishi-koen Station, the walk takes 15–20 minutes.

Sendai City Museum

Visit Sendai City Museum for Date Masamune and city history. Explore collections left by the Date clan, then combine the visit with the castle site.
- AdmissionPermanent exhibition admission costs JPY 460 for adults and university students, JPY 230 for high school pupils and JPY 110 for primary and junior high school pupils. Special exhibitions cost extra.
- HoursThe museum opens from 09:00 to 16:45, with last entry at 16:15. Closures on Mondays and days after public holidays have exceptions. It closes on 28 December–4 January. Follow the official calendar.
- Getting thereWalk about eight minutes from Tozai Line International Center Station south exit 1. On Loople, alight at Museum/International Center/Ryokusaikan-mae and walk about three minutes.

Zuiganji
Zuiganji Temple瑞巌寺
At Zuiganji, look closely at paintings, carvings and ceiling decoration that differ by room. Choose it for ornate temple interiors alongside Matsushima’s sea views.
- AdmissionAdmission costs JPY 1,000 for visitors of high school age and above, and JPY 500 for primary and junior high school pupils.
- HoursZuiganji opens at 08:30. It closes at 17:00 in April–September, 16:30 in March and October, 16:00 in February and November, and 15:30 in January and December. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing.
- Getting thereTake the JR Senseki Line from Sendai to Matsushima-Kaigan, then walk about ten minutes. Tohoku Main Line Matsushima Station is different and requires about 25 minutes on foot.

Entsuin
Entsuin Temple円通院
Walk at leisure through Entsuin’s four gardens, each with a different atmosphere. Combine the garden walk with the main hall at nearby Zuiganji.
- AdmissionAdmission costs JPY 500 for adults and JPY 300 for primary and junior high school pupils.
- HoursEntsuin opens from 09:00 to 16:00 in April–November, and from 09:00 to 15:30 in December–March. It is open year-round. The facility recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before closing. Night events are separate.
- Getting thereEntsuin is about five minutes’ walk from JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station, or about 20 minutes from JR Matsushima Station. Distinguish the stations when choosing a train.

Sendai Uminomori Aquarium
Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium仙台うみの杜水族館
Choose Uminomori Aquarium for Sanriku marine life up close. Explore its large tank recreating Sanriku’s seas, alongside marine life from Japan and around the world.
- AdmissionAdmission costs JPY 2,400 for adults, JPY 1,800 for visitors aged 65 and over, JPY 1,700 for junior high and high school pupils, JPY 1,200 for primary school pupils and JPY 700 for preschool children aged four and over.
- HoursOperating guidance checked on 9 October 2026 lists 28 September–3 November hours of 09:00–17:30, last entry 17:00, and 4 November–19 March hours of 10:00–17:00, last entry 16:30. Check official operation for other dates and temporary changes.
- Getting thereTake the JR Senseki Line from Sendai to Nakanosakae, about 18 minutes, then walk about 15 minutes from the south exit. Miyako Kotsu buses between the station and aquarium cost JPY 200 per adult one-way; this is not a free shuttle. Train and bus waits are extra.

Takinoyu
Taki-no-Yu滝の湯
While staying in Naruko Onsen, use station-area Takinoyu for a hot-spring bath. On the return-to-Sendai day, decide around your return connection. The gorge walk is a separate previous-day visit.
- AdmissionAdult bathing admission costs JPY 300. Buy a ticket at the entrance machine.
- HoursTakinoyu opens from 07:30 to 21:00. City guidance lists last admission at 20:30. Check temporary changes for your date.
- Getting thereTakinoyu is at 47-1 Yumoto, Naruko Onsen, about five minutes’ walk from Naruko Onsen Station. After bathing, allow time to return to the station and change at Kogota for Sendai.

Bansuisodo · 晩翠草堂
Choose a short visit to poet Doi Bansui’s former home and exhibitions. Loople returns to Sendai Station in one loop direction; allow viewing and return time separately.

Frequently asked questions
Should I alight at Matsushima or Matsushima-Kaigan?
From Sendai to Zuiganji and Entsuin, use JR Senseki Line Matsushima-Kaigan, ten minutes’ walk from Zuiganji. Tohoku Main Line Matsushima is a different station, about 25 minutes’ walk from the temple.
Do Sendai Castle Site and Zuihoden have the same admission fee?
Ordinary castle-site walks are free; separate exhibitions are excluded. Individual Zuihoden admission is JPY 570 for adults/university students, or JPY 460 with an eligible same-day Loople day-pass discount. The bus pass costs extra.

Is there a free shuttle from Nakanosakae to the aquarium?
No. Walk about 15 minutes one-way from Nakanosakae’s south exit or take Miyako Kotsu’s bus for JPY 200 per adult one-way. If using the bus, check return times too.
