What to Visit in Sendai and Matsushima
Choose Zuihoden and Sendai Castle Ruins for Date Masamune's mausoleum architecture and castle views, or Sendai City Museum for Date-family materials. Zuihoden
Zuihoden Mausoleum瑞鳳殿
For ornate mausoleum architecture associated with Date Masamune, visit Zuihoden. The route climbs a wooded approach and shrine stairs, so choose a day when stairs are manageable.

- HoursZuihoden is open from 9:00 AM to 4:50 PM February–November, with last admission at 4:30 PM. December–January hours are 9:00 AM–4:20 PM, with last admission at 4:00 PM. The site closes December 31. On January 1, only Zuihoden opens; Kansenden, Zennoden, and the historical museum close.
- DirectionsGet off Loople Sendai at Zuihoden-mae and climb the approach. There are about 80 steps to the entrance and about 30 more within the grounds. From Omachi-Nishikoen on the Tozai Line, the walk takes 15–20 minutes.

Sendai City Museum

For Date Masamune and Sendai history, visit Sendai City Museum. Explore the city's past through Date-family materials, then combine the museum with the castle ruins.

Zuiganji

- DirectionsFrom Sendai, take the JR Senseki Line to Matsushima-Kaigan and walk about 10 minutes. Matsushima on the Tohoku Main Line is a different station, a roughly 25-minute walk away.

Take your time in Entsuin's four gardens, each with a different atmosphere. Follow a main-hall visit at nearby Zuiganji with a garden walk.

Taki-no-Yu

For bathing near the station during a Naruko Onsen stay, consider the public bath Taki-no-Yu. On a Sendai return day, decide around your train connection. The gorge walk is a separate visit the day before.

Choose a short visit to poet Doi Bansui's former home and exhibits. The Loople return to Sendai runs in one loop direction, so allow separate visiting and return time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I get off at Matsushima or Matsushima-Kaigan?
For Zuiganji and Entsuin from Sendai, get off at Matsushima-Kaigan on the JR Senseki Line. Zuiganji is a 10-minute walk away. Matsushima on the Tohoku Main Line is a different station, a 25-minute walk from the temple.
Do Sendai Castle Ruins and Zuihoden have the same admission fee?
General walks through Sendai Castle Ruins are free; separate exhibition facilities are excluded. Individual Zuihoden admission is ¥570 for adults and college students, or ¥460 under the qualifying same-day Loople pass discount. The bus pass costs extra.

Is there a free shuttle from Nakanosakae to the aquarium?
The bus is not a free shuttle. Walk about 15 minutes one way from Nakanosakae's south exit, or take the Miyako transport bus for ¥200 per adult one way. If choosing the bus, check the return service too.
