Should You Change Hotels During Five Days in Sendai and Miyagi?

Keep a Sendai hotel for separate exhibit, temple, and aquarium days, or spend two nights in Sendai followed by two in Naruko Onsen. Naruko is a separate hot-spring area requiring a transfer at Kogota. For the gorge, check the autumn seasonal bus's dates and both journeys.

City Exhibits and Temples, Then the Aquarium Before Departure

Spend four nights at one Sendai hotel, with separate days for the former home, museum and castle ruins, Matsushima, and the mausoleum. Add the aquarium on the final day only if time remains to leave the region afterward.

Day 1: Bansuisodo, Then Your Sendai Hotel

Bansuisodo · 晩翠草堂

Start with a short visit to exhibits in poet Doi Bansui's former home. Take Loople Sendai from stop 16 at Sendai Station's west exit to Bansuisodo-mae, then enter from the Aoba-dori side by the stone marker. General admission is free; hours are 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. The house closes on Mondays, or the next day if Monday is a public holiday, and December 29–January 3.

After visiting, take Loople in the same direction back to Sendai Station. You might plan 20–30 minutes for the house, but the return loop takes about an hour; this is not a quick round trip. Two single bus rides cost ¥600.

  1. Sendai Station West Exit Stop 16 → Bansuisodo-mae

Take Loople Sendai from stop 16 at Sendai Station's west exit to Bansuisodo-mae. The return also runs in the same loop direction.

Loople Sendai: 20-Minute Weekday Service Outside August; 15-Minute Weekend, Holiday, and August Service; ¥300/¥700

  2. Bansuisodo-mae → Bansuisodo

From the Loople stop, use the entrance on the Aoba-dori side by the stone marker inscribed 「天地有情」. Plan about 20–30 minutes for the former-home exhibits. Distinguish this from the regular city-bus stop with the same name.

  3. Bansuisodo-mae → Sendai Station

Take Loople Sendai from Bansuisodo-mae in the same loop direction. Even with a short house visit, the loop back to Sendai Station takes about an hour, so allow ample return time.

Loople Sendai: 20-Minute Weekday Service Outside August; 15-Minute Weekend, Holiday, and August Service; ¥300/¥700

For a late arrival or closure, skip the house and eat around the station.

Day 2: The Museum and Castle Ruins

For Date Masamune and Sendai history, explore Date-family materials at the museum. Take Loople Sendai from stop 16 at Sendai Station's west exit to Hakubutsukan–Kokusai Center–Ryokusaikan-mae, then walk about 3 minutes. Visit the permanent exhibition and return to the same stop.

Continue on Loople in the same loop direction to the castle ruins. See Honmaru's statue and views, then return to the same stop. This day links exhibits with the ruins; the mausoleum is on day 4. A ¥700 Loople day pass plus permanent-exhibition admission discounted to ¥360 with that same-day pass total ¥1,060.

The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 4:45 PM, with last admission at 4:15 PM. Monday and post-holiday closures have exceptions; check the official calendar. Recalculate the admission subtotal on free-admission or closure dates.

Loople Sendai: 20-Minute Weekday Service Outside August; 15-Minute Weekend, Holiday, and August Service; ¥300/¥700

On museum closure dates, swap the visit order with another day. If the exhibition runs long, reduce extra sightseeing and allow time to return to Sendai Station.

Day 3: Matsushima

In Matsushima, combine Zuiganji's ornate main hall with Entsuin's garden. Take the Senseki Line for about 40 minutes to Matsushima-Kaigan, a different station from Matsushima on the Tohoku Main Line. Walk about 10 minutes to Zuiganji, see the temple architecture and exhibits, then continue to nearby Entsuin. Allow separate time for entry and ticketing at both sites and for meals.

Entsuin closes at 4:00 PM April–November or 3:30 PM December–March. If lunch runs late, visit the garden first. In strong wind, shorten the coastal walk and return from Matsushima-Kaigan on a Sendai-bound train. The two temple admissions total ¥1,500; with the ¥1,420 Area Pass, the subtotal is ¥2,920.

  1. Sendai Station → JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station

From Sendai, take a JR Senseki Line train stopping at Matsushima-Kaigan for about 40 minutes. Check your stop: it differs from Matsushima on the Tohoku Main Line.

If you cannot visit both temples, choose one. If you do not qualify for the pass, recalculate costs using the actual individual JR tickets.

Day 4: Zuihoden

For Date-family mausoleum architecture, choose Zuihoden. Take Loople Sendai from stop 16 at Sendai Station's west exit to Zuihoden-mae. Walk about 7 minutes to reception; the approach includes about 80 steps. Visit the mausoleum and historical museum, then descend to the same stop.

Give this day to the mausoleum alone. Return to Sendai Station on Loople in the same loop direction, have lunch, and rest. Do not add another visit to the castle ruins from day 2.

Adult and college-student admission is ¥460 when presenting the same-day Loople pass first. With the ¥700 bus pass, the total is ¥1,160. Regular admission is ¥570. Last admission is 4:30 PM February–November and 4:00 PM December–January. All areas close December 31; only Zuihoden opens January 1. Return to the station in the same loop direction.

  1. Sendai Station West Exit Stop 16 → Zuihoden-mae

  2. Zuihoden-mae → Zuihoden

Loople Sendai: 20-Minute Weekday Service Outside August; 15-Minute Weekend, Holiday, and August Service; ¥300/¥700

If stairs or a closure lead you to skip the mausoleum, recalculate costs using admission and your actual number of bus rides.

Day 5: The Aquarium → Return to Sendai → Departure

Spend the day discovering Sanriku marine life. Explore Japanese and worldwide marine animals around Uminomori Aquarium's large tank. From Sendai, take a Senseki Line train stopping at Nakanosakae for about 18 minutes, then walk about 15 minutes from the south exit. Follow the official access map via National Route 45 and Debana Intersection.

Allow about 2–3 hours for exhibits and breaks. Check opening and last-admission times on the actual date's calendar. After visiting, return to the same station for a Sendai-bound train. Adult admission ¥2,400 plus a one-day Area Pass for eligible travelers at ¥1,420 totals ¥3,820. Taking buses both ways between the station and aquarium costs an extra ¥400.

Departure day also needs time to return to the station. Skip sightseeing today if there is insufficient time before your departure.

Day 3: Bansuisodo → Sendai Station → Naruko Onsen

Bansuisodo · 晩翠草堂

Before moving to Naruko, make a short visit to exhibits in poet Doi Bansui's former home. Take Loople Sendai from stop 16 at Sendai Station's west exit to Bansuisodo-mae, then use the Aoba-dori-side entrance by the stone marker. General admission is free; hours are 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. The house closes on Mondays, or the next day if Monday is a public holiday, and December 29–January 3.

After visiting, return to Sendai Station on Loople in the same direction. You might plan 20–30 minutes for the house, but the return loop takes about an hour; this is not a quick round trip. Two single bus rides cost ¥600.

Have lunch around the station, then move to your Naruko Onsen hotel. Take the Tohoku Main Line from Sendai to Kogota and transfer to the Rikuu East Line toward Naruko-Onsen. Day 4: Seasonal Bus Round Trip to the Gorge Entrance → Naruko Hotel

Use a Naruko Onsen day for a gorge walk. Take the Momiji-go bus to Nakayamadaira-guchi and head to the trail entrance by the rest house. Descend 350 meters one way to Kaikobashi, then return to the same entrance. This is not a through-route to the opposite side.

Follow the listed 9:00 AM–4:00 PM trail hours and on-site restrictions. Choose a return bus first and allow sightseeing and stair-return time. The October 26–November 8, 2026 Momiji-go adult fare is ¥450 one way or ¥900 round trip. Boarding is first-come with cash payment, so a full bus or service change may prevent the planned round trip. Other seasons require a separate access check.

Can I use the Sendai Area Pass to travel to Naruko Onsen?

Official JR coverage is designated sections between Sendai, Matsushima, Matsushima-Kaigan, Yamadera, and Shiroishi. The Sendai–Kogota–Naruko-Onsen return JR journey and overnight stay are separate from the itinerary's Area Pass costs. This differs from the wider JR EAST PASS; distinguish names and coverage.

Can one Sendai Area Pass cover a hotel move from Sendai to Yamagata?

The Senzan Line pass boundary is Yamadera, so it does not cover the whole journey to Yamagata. Price the full move with regular tickets or check the validity of a JR EAST PASS you already hold. For three nights in Sendai and one in Yamagata, return to Sendai on the Senzan Line on the final day. Accommodation and extra rail fares are excluded from the existing A/B partial totals.
