Five days in Sendai and Miyagi: should I change accommodation?
Stay in Sendai for separate exhibition, temple and aquarium days, or move after two nights in Sendai for two nights in Naruko Onsen. Naruko is a separate hot-spring area reached by changing trains at Kogota. For the gorge, check the autumn seasonal bus dates and return services.
Choose an itinerary for 5 days / 4 nights
City displays, temples and a final-day aquarium
Stay four nights at one Sendai base, with separate days for Bansuisodo, the museum and castle, Matsushima, and the mausoleum. Include the final-day aquarium only if it leaves enough time before departure.

Ordinary admission is free. Hours are 09:00–17:00; closed Mondays (the following day if Monday is a public holiday) and 29 December–3 January.
Return by Loople in the same direction. Allow a suggested 20–30 minutes at the house, but about an hour around the loop for the return to the station. Two single bus fares total JPY 600.

Frequently asked questions
Does the two-night Naruko itinerary cost include return JR travel?
No. It is a partial admission and sightseeing-transport subtotal using paid museum permanent-exhibition admission and the gorge bus during its operating period. Mandatory return JR travel via Sendai–Kogota–Naruko-Onsen is extra; search fares for your date. Accommodation, meals, accommodation access, luggage storage, airport and long-distance travel are also excluded.

Does the Naruko gorge bus run in other seasons?
Momijigo is an autumn foliage-season bus. The checked 2026 guidance lists operation from 26 October to 8 November. Do not assume the same service exists in other seasons; arrange return access separately. Payment is cash and boarding first come, first served. Full buses or delays can prevent boarding your chosen service.
Can I use the Sendai Area Pass from Sendai to Naruko Onsen?
The pass’s official JR coverage comprises designated sections between Sendai, Matsushima, Matsushima-Kaigan, Yamadera and Shiroishi. Return JR travel via Kogota to Naruko Onsen and accommodation are separate from the Area Pass costs in the itinerary. This is a different product from the wider JR EAST PASS; distinguish their names and coverage.
Sendai Area Pass: JPY 1,420, passport eligibility and coverage
Can one Sendai Area Pass cover a move from Sendai to Yamagata?
No. The Senzan Line coverage ends at Yamadera, so one pass does not cover the whole journey to Yamagata Station. Price the whole journey with ordinary tickets, or check validity of a JR EAST PASS you already hold. The three-night Sendai/one-night Yamagata option returns to Sendai by the Senzan Line on the final day. Accommodation and additional rail fares are excluded from the existing A/B partial subtotals.
