What should you choose for two days in Sendai and Miyagi?

For history and temples, visit Zuihoden and the castle on day one, then Matsushima. For the aquarium, choose Uminomori first and the museum next day. Omit final-day visits for a morning departure. Even for afternoon departures, first secure time to finish sightseeing and connect with onward travel.

Sendai history and Matsushima temples

Visit Date Masamune’s mausoleum and castle-site views, then Matsushima’s main hall and garden the next day. Choose this if you have time for stairs at both destinations and the final-day temple return journey.

Day 1 — Zuihoden and the castle site

Choose Zuihoden for Date clan mausoleum architecture. Take Loople Sendai from Sendai Station west-exit stop 16 to Zuihoden-mae. Walk about seven minutes to reception, with around 80 steps on the approach. Visit the mausoleum and historical museum, then descend to the same stop.

Continue in the same loop direction to Sendai Castle Site. From the stop, climb to Honmaru for the statue and city views, then descend to the same stop. Castle-site walks are free; separate exhibitions are excluded. If stairs at both places are too much, choose just one.

Show that day’s Loople one-day pass before buying admission: the adult/university-student rate is JPY 460. With the JPY 700 bus pass, the subtotal is JPY 1,160. Ordinary admission is JPY 570. Last entry is 16:30 in February–November and 16:00 in December–January. All areas close on 31 December; only Zuihoden opens on 1 January. Return to the station in the same loop direction.

Day 2 — Matsushima’s two temples

Explore Zuiganji’s ornate main hall and Entsuin’s garden. Take the Senseki Line for about 40 minutes to Matsushima-Kaigan, a different station from Tohoku Main Line Matsushima. Walk about ten minutes to Zuiganji for architecture and exhibitions, then continue to nearby Entsuin. Allow separate time for each facility’s entry/ticketing and meals.

Entsuin closes at 16:00 in April–November and 15:30 in December–March. If lunch is delayed, visit the garden first. In strong winds, shorten the coast walk and return from Matsushima-Kaigan on a Sendai-bound train. Two temple admissions of JPY 1,500 plus the JPY 1,420 area pass total JPY 2,920.

On departure day, allow time back to the station too. Omit today’s visit if there is too little time before your departure.

Take a Senseki Line train stopping at Nakanosakae, about 18 minutes from Sendai, then walk about 15 minutes from its south exit. Follow the official access map via National Route 45 and Debana junction.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add Matsushima or the museum before a morning day-two departure?

A morning departure leaves little time for Matsushima or the museum. Choose only a first-day visit suited to your arrival. Even with an afternoon departure, final-day sightseeing requires enough time to return to Sendai and catch onward transport.
