One night in Sendai and Miyagi: which route should you choose?
Choose Zuihoden and Sendai Castle Site on day one, then Matsushima on day two for history and temples. For an aquarium-focused trip, choose Uminomori first and the museum the next day. Omit final-day sightseeing for a morning departure. Even for an afternoon departure, first allow time after visiting to connect to your onward service.
Choose a 2 days / 1 night itinerary
Sendai history and Matsushima temples
See Date Masamune’s mausoleum and castle-site views, then Matsushima’s main hall and garden the next day. Choose this if you can allow for stairs at both city sights and a temple round trip on departure day.

Visit the aquarium on day one and the museum on day two for Sanriku marine life and Date family materials. Allow for the walk from the station to the aquarium, and swap days if museum closures require it.

Day 1: Zuihoden and castle site
Choose Zuihoden for Date family mausoleum architecture. Take Loople Sendai from West Exit stand 16 to Zuihoden-mae. Walk about seven minutes to reception, including about 80 steps on the approach. After the mausoleum and museum, descend to the same stop.
Continue on Loople in the same direction to Sendai Castle Site. Climb from the stop to the Honmaru for the statue and city views, then descend to the same stop. The castle-site walk is free; separate exhibitions are excluded. Choose just one city sight if stairs at both would be too much.
Present that day’s Loople day pass before paying for discounted admission of ¥460 for adults and university students. With the ¥700 pass, the subtotal is ¥1,160; ordinary admission is ¥570. Last admission is 16:30 in February–November and 16:00 in December–January. All areas close on 31 December; only Zuihoden opens on 1 January. Return to the station around the same-direction loop.
- Sendai Station West Exit, stand 16 → Zuihoden-mae

Continue on Loople in the same direction to Sendai Station. There is no reverse-direction route; check the remaining loop to the station.
If stairs or closures mean omitting the mausoleum, recalculate admission and the actual number of bus rides.
Day 2: two Matsushima temples
Explore Zuiganji’s ornate main hall and Entsuin’s garden in Matsushima. Take the Senseki Line for about 40 minutes to Matsushima-Kaigan, a different station from Tohoku Main Line Matsushima. Walk about 10 minutes to Zuiganji for temple architecture and exhibitions, then continue to nearby Entsuin. Allow extra time for entering and buying tickets at both facilities, and for meals.
Entsuin closes at 16:00 in April–November and 15:30 in December–March. If lunch is running late, visit the garden before eating. Shorten coastal walks in strong wind and return on a Sendai-bound train from Matsushima-Kaigan. Two temple admissions of ¥1,500 plus the ¥1,420 area pass total ¥2,920.
On departure day, leave time to return to the station too. Omit sightseeing if insufficient time remains before your onward service.
- Sendai Station → JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station
Take a JR Senseki Line train from Sendai that stops at Matsushima-Kaigan, about a 40-minute journey. This differs from Matsushima on the Tohoku Main Line; check where you get off.

Frequently asked questions
Can I visit Matsushima or the museum before a morning departure on day two?
A day-two morning departure leaves little room for Matsushima or the museum. Choose day-one sightseeing that fits your arrival. Even with an afternoon departure, final-day sightseeing needs time to return and connect to your service from Sendai.
