Four days in Yamagata: how should I spend the middle two days?

Give Yamadera and Zao separate days for temple stairs and views followed by ropeway mountain scenery. For jellyfish instead of temples, choose separate Zao and Kamo days. Both plans need Zao B set-ticket dates and operating ropeways checked.

Temple visit, then mountain views the next day

Give Yamadera’s temple stairs and Zao mountain views separate days, alongside city park and Bunshokan visits. Choose this if stair climbing is manageable and your dates fit the Zao B set ticket’s official period.

Day 1: Kajo Park

Take a relaxed walk through castle remains and parkland near Yamagata Station. Walk about ten minutes from the West Exit to Kajo Park’s South Gate. Explore at your own pace, then leave through the same gate and retrace your walk to the station.

Ordinary walks are free; individually charged facilities inside the park are excluded. Hours are 05:00–22:00 in April–October and 05:30–22:00 in November–March. Shorten the walk in strong wind and rain and eat near the station.

  1. Yamagata Station West Exit → Kajo Park South Gate

Walk about ten minutes from Yamagata Station’s West Exit to Kajo Park’s South Gate.

Yamagata City: Kajo Park free access, seasonal hours and south-gate access

  2. Kajo Park South Gate → Kajo Park walk → South Gate

Explore the castle remains and park at your own pace, then leave through the South Gate where you entered. Ordinary walks are free; shorten your visit in strong wind and rain.

Yamagata City: Kajo Park free access, seasonal hours and south-gate access

  3. Kajo Park South Gate → Yamagata Station West Exit

Retrace your approximately ten-minute walk from the South Gate to Yamagata Station’s West Exit.

Yamagata City: Kajo Park free access, seasonal hours and south-gate access

The route from the East Exit to the East Otemon Gate takes about 15 minutes. Distinguish it from this itinerary’s approach from the West Exit to the South Gate.

Day 2: Yamadera

Climb Yamadera’s stone stairs to visit the temple and enjoy mountain views from Godaido. Take a JR Senzan Line train from Yamagata towards Sendai and alight at Yamadera. Walk about ten minutes to the stair entrance, then climb towards Konponchudo and the Basho statue to reach the Sanmon ticket office. The ten-minute station approach excludes walking inside and ticket queues. Admission through Sanmon is JPY 500 for junior high-school age and older, paid in cash.

Continue towards Okunoin and Godaido, then descend. Official guidance lists 1,015 steps and about 90 minutes return; allow a suggested two to three hours with photos and rests. From the descending-route exit, follow the shopping street shown on the tourism association’s 2025 map and on-site signs back to the station. Do not rush down the stairs. If the visit takes longer, eat after returning or choose a later train.

Return towards Yamagata on the Senzan Line. October–November temple admission is 08:00–15:30; December–March is 08:30–15:00, with possible earlier closure for weather. Ordinary adult train fare is JPY 260 each way or JPY 520 return, included in the partial subtotal. Check train times for your date separately. The treasure hall and Konponchudo inner-sanctuary visit each cost another JPY 200.

  1. Yamagata Station → Yamadera Station

Take a JR Senzan Line train from Yamagata towards Sendai and alight at Yamadera. Search outbound and return services and fares together for your date. Ordinary adult paper tickets cost JPY 260 each way; JPY 520 return is included in course costs. Limited-express and Shinkansen supplements are extra.

  4. Yamadera Station → Yamagata Station

Return towards Yamagata on the Senzan Line from Yamadera Station. If descending takes longer, check the next train instead of rushing.

JR official timetable: Yamadera to Yamagata

If stairs are difficult, or snow, ice or access restrictions apply, choose Bunshokan and Kajo Park instead of the mountain temple visit.

Day 3: Zao Ropeway

Take the ropeways to Jizo Sancho Station for Zao mountain views. First buy a B set ticket at the bus information office in front of Yamagata Station, then board the Z90 Zao Onsen bus at stop 1 outside the East Exit. The JPY 6,600 adult B ticket, valid 13 June–3 November 2026, includes return buses and both ropeway sections to Jizo Sancho. It is not sold on buses or at other counters and differs from the Central Ropeway A ticket. On 4 November, only the return bus portion remains valid.

Walk about ten minutes from the terminal to Zao Ropeway’s Sanroku Station. Take the Sanroku Line to Juhyo Kogen and change to the Sancho Line for Jizo Sancho. Do not confuse this with the approximately five-minute walk to Central Ropeway’s Onsen Station. Allow a suggested two to three hours for both return sections, transfers and views; check queues and suspensions separately. Okama hiking is excluded.

Descend on the Sancho Line followed by the Sanroku Line. Walk about ten minutes back to the terminal and take a C2 bus to Yamagata Station. Choose your return service first and allow descent time on both sections. Eat after descending, or in Yamagata if time is short. Do not add the JPY 4,400 return ropeway fare again to the B ticket. Bathing, meals, accommodation and other days’ JR travel are extra.

Without the set ticket, the reference calculation is two JPY 1,200 bus fares plus JPY 4,400 return ropeway fare to Jizo Sancho: JPY 6,800. The bus fare comes from the operator’s foreign-language guide; check newer guidance for winter fares and operation on your date.

  1. Yamagata Station East Exit → station-front bus information office → stop 1 → Zao Onsen Bus Terminal

Strong winds, suspensions or full buses may prevent this return journey. Refunds for suspended ropeway sections are handled at the sales counter; used bus fares are not refundable. A/B tickets cannot be exchanged on site.

Day 4: Bunshokan

Take time to see Bunshokan’s stained glass and restored auditorium decoration. Walk about 30 minutes from Yamagata Station to the front entrance. Admission is free; allow a suggested 60–90 minutes inside. Retrace your approximately 30-minute walk to the station before a meal.

Bunshokan opens from 09:00 to 16:30. It is closed on the first and third Mondays of each month (the following day if Monday is a public holiday) and from 29 December to 3 January. For a bus via City Hall, check routes, timetables and fares for your date separately.

Day 3: change at Tsuruoka S-Mall → Kamo Aquarium → return to Yamagata

Spend a day on Kamo Aquarium’s jellyfish exhibits. Take a Tsuruoka/Sakata-bound highway bus from stop 1 outside Yamagata Station and alight at S-Mall Terminal. Change at S-Mall stop 1 to a local Yunohama Onsen bus via Kamo. Services via Zenpoji do not stop at the aquarium; check the route.

Alight at Kamo Aquarium and enter the facility. Allow time for exhibits, lunch and rests, returning to the same stop before your bus. Aquarium hours are 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:00; restaurant guidance lists 11:00–15:00. Check menus and last orders on site. Do not add other coastal sights.

Return by local bus to S-Mall and change to a Yamagata-bound highway bus. Both return journeys and waits make this a long day; choose connections from both timetables before setting out. Two JPY 2,600 highway fares, two JPY 840 local fares and JPY 1,500 adult admission total JPY 8,380. No multi-ticket discount is applied.

The timetable effective 1 April 2026 gives this example for weekdays, weekends and public holidays: Yamagata Station 07:23 → S-Mall 09:17, then S-Mall 10:35 → Kamo 11:18. Return Kamo 14:26 → S-Mall 15:03, then S-Mall 16:30 → Yamagata Station 18:24. Transfer waits are 78 and 87 minutes. Delays or full buses can break these connections.
