Where to stay in Yamaguchi: east, centre or west?
Consider staying near Shin-Yamaguchi Station for Akiyoshi-do and Rurikoji’s five-storey pagoda in Yamaguchi City. Neither attraction is near the station; each needs a bus or JR journey. For Karato Market and the Kanmon Strait, stay near Shimonoseki Station; to start with Kintaikyo Bridge, compare a first night in Iwakuni.
Start with the places you want to visit in Yamaguchi
Compare eastern Iwakuni bridge/park, central cave/pagoda/footbath and western Shimonoseki market/aquarium/undersea tunnel separately. Cave/pagoda courses stay in Shin-Yamaguchi; strait courses stay in Shimonoseki.
Itineraries by trip length
See Akiyoshi-do/Yamaguchi City courses for cave and pagoda, or Shimonoseki courses for market and strait. For Kintaikyo too, consider starting in Iwakuni and moving onwards. Choose places first, then compare bases and travel days.
2 days / 1 night
Stay in Shin-Yamaguchi for Akiyoshi-do and Rurikoji’s pagoda, or Shimonoseki for Karato Market and the tunnel. Match market visits to sushi-event days. Reduce sightseeing for late arrival or a morning Day 2 departure.
3 days / 2 nights
Move hotels from Iwakuni to Shin-Yamaguchi for bridge/park, cave and pagoda. Alternatively, stay two Shimonoseki nights for separate market, tunnel and Treasure Hall days. A’s partial total includes adult Iwakuni–Shin-Yamaguchi local fare of 1,690 yen; add cave-bound Bocho return fares separately.
4 days / 3 nights
Stay one Iwakuni night, then two Shin-Yamaguchi nights to give pagoda and cave separate days. Visit the cave the day after moving hotels. For aquarium, market, tunnel and Akama Shrine, stay three Shimonoseki nights and return to the same hotel daily.
5 days / 4 nights
For bridge, market and tunnel, move west with one Iwakuni night, two Shin-Yamaguchi nights and one Shimonoseki night. For aquarium, Treasure Hall, cave and footbath, stay two Shimonoseki nights then two Shin-Yamaguchi nights. The Shimonoseki-start course has no sushi event, so you do not need to match event days. Starting in Iwakuni finishes at Shimonoseki; starting in Shimonoseki finishes at Shin-Yamaguchi. Choose the final station that fits your onward city.

Hotel bases and sightseeing areas
Shin-Yamaguchi Station is a JR base in Yamaguchi City; Akiyoshi-do is in Mine City. Iwakuni is in the prefecture’s east and Shimonoseki in its west. Crossing the whole Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel reaches Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture, outside Yamaguchi.

Choose your hotel, arrival station and departure station
Stay near Shin-Yamaguchi for the cave, pagoda and Yuda Onsen, or Shimonoseki for market, aquarium and pedestrian tunnel. Courses starting with Kintaikyo spend the first night in Iwakuni before moving to Shin-Yamaguchi. For departures from Shin-Iwakuni or Shin-Shimonoseki, add travel from your hotel base’s station.

Choose dates and transport
Cave admission varies by visiting date
Adult Akiyoshi-do admission is normally 1,600 yen, or 1,350 in December–February. Specified 2026 peak dates, 27 April–7 May and 1 July–31 August, cost 1,900. Ranges for cave courses—one-night A, two-night A, three-night A and four-night A/B—reflect these seasonal admission differences, rather than a full travel budget including all transport. For another year, check that year’s fares.
Add transport outside the partial totals separately
Adult local-JR fares: Shin-Yamaguchi–Yamaguchi 240 yen one way/480 return; Shin-Yamaguchi–Yuda Onsen 240/480; Iwakuni–Shin-Yamaguchi 1,690 one way; Shin-Yamaguchi–Shimonoseki 1,170 one way in either direction. Cost tables use each course’s actual rides, based on separate section tickets. Distinguish fares/stopover conditions for issuing several sections on one ticket and Shinkansen charges.
Shin-Yamaguchi–Akiyoshi-do return Bocho bus fares remain excluded. If online search is unavailable, give Shin-Yamaguchi information or the Yamaguchi office your stops and date to check return fares. Accommodation, meals, airport travel and luggage storage are separate.

Compare regional passes and attraction buses separately
Adults pay 23,000 yen for seven days with Sanyo-San’in Area Pass, or 26,000 for seven days with JR-WEST All Area Pass. Both official guides cover Sanyo Shinkansen Shin-Osaka–Hakata and local/rapid JR within their valid areas. All Area has wider coverage, including Hokuriku Shinkansen Tsuruga–Joetsu-Myoko; travel within Yamaguchi alone does not require the more expensive pass.
Course cost tables use adult local-JR section tickets. For Shinkansen or extra regions, compare all date-specific JR sections and ordinary basic/limited-express fares with pass prices. No pass saving is calculated from these partial totals alone. Sanden, Bocho and Iwakuni buses and cave/bridge/aquarium admission are separately paid in these courses.
Hagi is outside the eight current courses and cost tables. Plan separate outward/return travel from Shin-Yamaguchi or Shimonoseki and the areas you will walk in Hagi. The current city-move courses connect eastern Iwakuni, central Shin-Yamaguchi/Mine and western Shimonoseki.

Stay in Shin-Yamaguchi for cave/pagoda, or Shimonoseki for market/undersea tunnel. To visit Akiyoshi-do when moving from Iwakuni, connect JR arrival with cave buses both ways, leaving about 90 minutes for viewing plus walks to/from stops.
