Where should you stay: Kawaguchiko or Kofu?
Stay near Kawaguchiko Station for Fuji views and lake walks, or near Kofu Station for art and ruins. Short trips suit one base. With three or more nights, compare moving from Kofu to Kawaguchiko against staying around the lake.
Which Yamanashi sights will you choose?
Choose the ropeway for high Fuji views, Oishi for lake walks or Appare for a cruise. For rainy-day interiors, compare raw/cut gems at the paid Gem Museum with Fuji’s heritage background at the free center. For Millet and ruins, compare Kofu’s art museum and Maizuru Park. Combining Kofu and the lake requires intercity travel, so decide your hotel base too.
Itineraries by trip length
Deciding whether to change hotels helps select a route. One-night options use one base; two-night options stay near Kawaguchiko. For three nights or longer, add Kofu art and ruins or continue sightseeing around the lake.
2 days / 1 night
Stay one night in Kawaguchiko for Fuji views/gems or Kofu for art/ruins. If you leave on the morning of day two, omit sightseeing that day.
3 days / 2 nights
Stay two Kawaguchiko nights for north-shore walks and gems. Route A uses day-one afternoon views; B uses day-one morning north shore and day-two heritage exhibitions/cruise.
4 days / 3 nights
One Kofu night then two Kawaguchiko nights, or three lake nights? A adds art/ruins; B keeps the same hotel for viewpoint, north shore, exhibitions and boat.
5 days / 4 nights
Both options split one Kofu night and three Kawaguchiko nights. Compared with the three-night Kofu route, add a day for viewpoint or heritage displays/Appare. Both finish at the Gem Museum.
Where to stay
Lake Kawaguchiko · 河口湖
Stay near Kawaguchiko Station if using trains and sightseeing buses. Compare lakeside hotels for views, but check station access and dinner options too. Oishi Park is on the north shore, requiring a bus from the station area.

Kofu · 甲府
Stay near Kofu Station for art, castle ruins and onward Chuo Line trains. Art-museum buses and Maizuru Castle Park are south of the station; the K1 bus to Kawaguchiko leaves from the north. Match the exit to your hotel location.

Rail passes and ordinary tickets
Arriving by rail from Tokyo
From Shinjuku, take the JR Chuo Line to Otsuki and transfer to Fujikyu Railway for Kawaguchiko. JR TOKYO Wide Pass covers JR East sections within its area and Fujikyu Railway, at 16,000 yen per adult for three consecutive days. Reserved seats on Fujisan Limited Express/Fujisan View Express and services such as Fujitozan Densha require supplements. Tokaido Shinkansen is excluded.
You can also buy ordinary tickets and required limited-express tickets separately. Compare Tokyo return travel with other JR journeys. One consecutive three-day pass cannot cover both first and last days of a five-day trip. You need an original, valid passport issued by a country other than Japan; Temporary Visitor status is not required for this pass. Check collection locations and reserved seats before departure.

Compare separate tickets for lake buses
Do not extend the pass’s rail coverage to Red/Blue Line buses or Appare. Budget local buses and boats separately. North-shore routes include a 1,500-yen adult bus day pass, but ordinary tickets can be cheaper depending on rides.
For only two museum-day Red Line rides, ordinary tickets cost 180 yen each, or 360 return: 1,140 less than the 1,500-yen day pass. Compare actual visit order and coverage before deciding the cheapest mix across other days or two-day passes. Accommodation, meals, luggage storage and travel outside the prefecture are excluded from all eight partial totals.

A Kofu day trip instead of an overnight
For a Kawaguchiko-to-Kofu castle-ruins day trip, check K1 timetables towards Kofu Station north side and back to Kawaguchiko. Choose a morning outward and afternoon return, focusing on Maizuru Castle Park, officially about three minutes on foot from Kofu’s south exit. Allow north–south station access and the return to the north-side bus stand after lunch separately.
This is a ruins visit without art-museum buses. Check building opening days for Inari Turret/Kurogane Gate interiors. Use operator timetables for date-specific services and temporary changes. Budget the day return separately from the existing eight route totals.

Mountain-top views or lakeside walks?
Choose the ropeway for high views towards Mt. Fuji, or Oishi Park for lake walks. Board the ropeway on the southeast shore; take a bus to Oishi on the north shore. Clouds may hide Fuji and strong winds may suspend the ropeway.

Which exhibitions suit a rainy day?
In Kawaguchiko, compare raw/cut gems or explore Fuji nature/culture at the heritage center. For Millet, visit Kofu’s art museum. This requires intercity travel from the lake, so is not a nearby immediate rainy-day replacement. Plan around facility closures.

For a boat trip or castle-ruins walk
Appare departs Funatsu and returns to the same pier after about 20 minutes, unlike the Oishi Park boat. For a short walk from Kofu Station, choose Maizuru Castle Park. If keep-base stairs would be difficult, walk only the lower ruins.

Areas to group into separate days
Kawaguchiko Station and Funatsu lakeside
On ropeway days, have station-area lunch then walk about 15 minutes to Lakeside Station. On heritage-center/Appare days, return to the station after morning displays, then walk about 10 minutes to Funatsu pier. Ropeway queues can clash with boat departures; allow each visit and connecting travel if doing both.

North shore and Oishi Park
Alight at the Red Line Natural Living Center terminus for Oishi walks and north-shore lunch, avoiding meal-related station returns. Use the station-bound Red Line afterwards. Visit the Gem Museum the next morning before returning to the station.

Kofu Station south side, art and ruins

Kawaguchiko Station → ropeway
Walk about 15 minutes to Lakeside Station and ride the ropeway out and back. Allow queues separately.
Kawaguchiko Station → Oishi Park
Take the Natural Living Center-bound Red Line from stand 1 to the terminus. After park walks, take a station-bound bus.
Kawaguchiko Station → Funatsu pier
Walk about 10 minutes to Appare’s ticket office/pier. The boat returns to its departure pier. Distinguish ropeway and boat entrances.
Kawaguchiko Station → World Heritage Center
Take the Motosuko-bound Blue Line from stand 1 to center stop 65, then walk about one minute. Number 65 is not a boarding-stand number.
Kawaguchiko Station → Gem Museum
Take the Natural Living Center-bound Red Line from stand 1 to stop 6. Follow signs to the exhibition entrance; allow the post-bus walk separately.
Kofu Station → prefectural art museum
Take a bus that stops at the museum from south stand 1. Return by a Kofu Station-bound bus after visiting.
Kofu Station → ruins and Kawaguchiko
Walk about three minutes from Kofu’s south exit to the castle park. On hotel-moving days, head to north-side K1 after visiting.

Lunch around the lake
Hoto: broad noodles and vegetables
Hoto is Yamanashi’s regional dish of broad noodles cooked with vegetables. Choose north-shore restaurants on Oishi days or Funatsu/station areas on viewpoint/cruise days. Menus and opening days vary; meals are excluded from route totals.
For Yoshida udon, look towards Fujiyoshida
For Yoshida udon’s firm noodles, check Fujiyoshida restaurants and travel separately. This differs from dining on Kawaguchiko’s north shore. Udon-trip transport to Fujiyoshida is excluded from itinerary totals.
