Kitakyushu Airport to Kokura and Mojiko: airport buses and JR connections

Take the Kokura-bound airport bus. For the station’s north side, choose a direct service to the Shinkansen exit; for the south side, choose a service to Kokura Station Bus Centre. Kokura Castle and Tanga Market are reached on foot from the south side or from Heiwadori on a service that calls there. For Mojiko, change to JR at Kokura Station.

Kitakyushu Airport · Kitakyushu Airport (KKJ) to Kokura Station · Kokura Station, one-way airport bus for adults 710 yen. Direct buses take approximately 33 to 36 minutes to the north stop.

This time does not include international immigration, baggage, or waiting. There is no railway station inside the airport terminal.

Official data confirmed: · Airport bus public timetable: March 29 - October 24, 2026, common on weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. If the date changes, please check the operator's original text below.

From arrivals to the Kokura bus

  1. Finish arrivals on 1F.

Immigration → baggage → customs → ‘バス / Bus’ signs. Domestic arrivals also use 1F and the bus stops outside. Find your exit on the floor map.

  2. Prepare payment and use stop 1.

Use the lobby ticket machine, or prepare supported transport IC, contactless bank card or cash. The stop map shows stops 1–3 to the left after exiting: 1 ‘小倉方面’ for Kokura; 2 ‘朽網駅方面’ for Kusami; 3 for Kurosaki/Orio. Domestic and international Kokura passengers use the same stop 1.

  3. Check direct or via Nakatani.

Not every Kokura bus stops at the station's Shinkansen Exit. Read the airport-departure ‘北九州空港→小倉方面’ table, rather than the reverse journey.

  4. Load bags; pay when getting off.

Kokura costs JPY 710. Supported IC includes nimoca, Suica and PASMO. Contactless bank-card support lists Visa, JCB, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club, Discover and UnionPay with the contactless mark. Tap the same card/device when boarding and getting off. Issuer authorisation or equipment can fail, so carry backup cash. JPY 5,000/10,000 notes cannot be exchanged onboard. Show machine/digital tickets as instructed.

No reservation is accepted; seats can fill. WILLER's official non-reserved web ticket does not book a seat or departure. Do not activate its use button until the crew checks it.

Use the luggage hold as directed on highway-style buses. Keep valuables, cameras, computers, glass and fragile items with you. Nishitetsu's rules restrict luggage over 30 kg total per person or 2 m combined dimensions. Ask about multiple large bags, wheelchairs or special equipment at 050-3616-2150. The ordinary Kusami bus is not guaranteed the same hold.

Add arrivals procedures, lobby/ticketing, bus waiting, changing, train waiting and the hotel walk to the times on board. Traffic, wind, heavy rain and diversions can lengthen road journeys.

The April 2025 revised JR fare table gives Kusami–Kokura JPY 450 and Kokura–Mojiko JPY 340. A limited express requires an extra ticket. The JPY 710 JR Kyushu app combination ticket travels via Kusami; it is not a direct Kokura bus ticket. Car/transfer quotations are separate from these public-transport fares.

Airport stops and Kokura connections on the map

The GSI basemap marks arrivals, boarding stops, station drop-offs and final approaches. Dotted lines show connections, not actual bus roads or railway tracks. They do not include every intermediate stop; use the official route table. Zoom controls distinguish nearby airport/station pins.

Kokura Station: north and south exits are opposite sides

Shinkansen Exit · 新幹線口 is north; Kokura Castle Exit · 小倉城口 is south. Nishitetsu Bus Kitakyushu · 西鉄バス北九州 operates the airport route.

  1. North-side hotels: direct bus to ‘小倉駅新幹線口’.

The arrival area is beside the north pedestrian deck. Check the entrance for hotels towards Rihga Royal/Aruaru City. This is an arrivals drop-off, not the reverse-direction boarding point.

  2. South-side hotels: compare the next ‘小倉駅バスセンター’ stop.

Kokura Station Bus Center · 小倉駅バスセンター is near Saintcity on the south. If you get off north, use lifts/stairs → 2F pedestrian deck → public passage outside JR gates → Kokura Castle Exit. Crossing needs no train ticket. Choose the appropriate south-side stairs/lift for your hotel's address.

  3. For JR, go to the 2F conventional-line gates.

From the bus centre, use the pedestrian deck and ‘JR / 在来線’ signs, not Shinkansen gates. Check the day's Mojiko platform display. Late buses use ‘小倉駅前’, a different street stop.

The official north-arrival/station-crossing/bus-centre map lists airport-bound boarding at 1F bay 8; this does not mean all arriving buses use bay 8. Add the crossing for opposite-side hotels. Shopping-centre indoor passages may close late; follow actual street/station access signs.

Walking to Kokura Castle

Kokura Castle · 小倉城 is southwest in Katsuyama Park · 勝山公園. Airport bus → south-side bus centre → Kokura Castle Exit/deck → Murasaki River · 紫川 and Riverwalk → east-side Toranomon-guchi (‘虎ノ門口’) park approach → paid keep entrance. From the north arrival, cross the station first.

Use the south-exit → castle walk with official access. The castle gives about 15 minutes from Kokura Station; add actual drop-off, crossings, bags and rain. Park access and paid keep entry are different stages. Check opening, closures and event restrictions; do not assume a large suitcase can go straight into the keep.

Tanga Market: follow current access around redevelopment

Tanga Market · 旦過市場 is south via Uomachi · 魚町: Kokura Castle Exit → Uomachi Gintengai · 魚町銀天街 → Uomachi 4-chome market approach. City guidance gives about ten minutes from the station. The joint city/market 2026 trading map shows access from the shopping-street side. Distinguish existing shops, Tanga Aozora Market · 旦過青空市場 and hatched redevelopment areas. A Nakatani-route bus can also drop you at Heiwadori · 平和通り for the Uomachi approach.

South exit → market walk ↗ · Heiwadori → market walk ↗. The official address is Uomachi 4-2-18. The pin is this approach, not the market office in the trade hall.

Checked October 2026: redevelopment continues while shops trade. The July city material and September update describe phased A/BC/D/E areas. Planned new-building passages are not established as open routes. Stay on public paths outside construction fences and follow current signs to trading shops; not all lanes or shops are open. The Korean 2026 shop/access PDF, about 123 MB reflects late March; newer signs take precedence. Check individual locations/hours through market notices or 093-513-1555.

For Mojiko, change to JR at Kokura

Mojiko Station · 門司港駅 is different from Moji Station · 門司駅. Moji is not the station forecourt of the Mojiko Retro area.

  1. Airport stop 1 → Kokura.

JPY 710; direct buses take about 33–36 minutes to the north drop-off. Collect bags and reach the 2F conventional-line gates. From the south bus centre, use the deck.

  2. Kagoshima Main Line local train towards Mojiko.

Choose ‘門司港’ on the Kagoshima Main Line · 鹿児島本線, not Shimonoseki (‘下関’). Kokura–Mojiko costs JPY 340 for about 14–15 minutes; bus plus train totals JPY 1,050. Use a machine ticket or supported IC; local seats are not reserved.

  3. Mojiko terminus → hotel or retro-area building.

Leave the gates for the forecourt, then use your hotel's address or the retro-area directions. The area covers several streets. Check station facilities for storage/access.

A checked 5/10 October 2026 example is airport 05:45 → north Kokura 06:18 → JR 06:37 → Mojiko 06:51. Bus delays, crossing and ticketing can mean a later train. An international landing time alone does not establish that you can catch either departure.

Kusami rail connection: compare it if the direct bus is full

Kusami Station · 朽網駅 is off the airport island. Follow 1F → airport stop 2 ‘朽網駅方面’ → rapid or route 51 bus → Kusami east side → Nippo Main Line towards Kokura → Kokura Station. The Nippo Main Line · 日豊本線 does not start in the terminal.

Separate tickets cost bus JPY 540 + local train JPY 450 = JPY 990. Time on board is about 16–22 minutes by bus plus 20 by local train, excluding changing/waiting. Choose a Kokura/Hakata-bound train stopping at Kokura, not the opposite Yukuhashi/Oita direction. On the ordinary bus, hold bags securely and keep aisles clear.

What does the JPY 710 app combination ticket cover?

The ‘北九州空港特急きっぷ’ JR Kyushu app ticket includes airport–Kusami bus plus Kusami–Kokura base fare and unreserved limited-express travel. It requires JR Kyushu Web registration and app purchase; it is not sold at a counter. Select airport → Kokura. QR use needs no paper collection; show the bus ticket in the app to the driver.

It is valid on the stated day for the specified route's local/rapid trains and unreserved limited-express seats, without a guaranteed seat or connection. It excludes Shinkansen and Mojiko; reserved limited-express seats require a separate charge. Ordinary separate limited-express tickets are listed at JPY 1,380 in airport guidance, different from this JPY 710 offer.

An official example is airport 10:27 → Kusami 10:44 → Sonic 10:53 → Kokura 11:03. Check the actual connection table; nine minutes is not guaranteed if the bus is late. Limited expresses are not an option at every first/last service time.

App sales open at 05:30 one month before the journey and end at 23:00 on its date. As this JPY 710 product is below JPY 800, convenience-store, bank-ATM and station payment are unavailable. After card payment, an uncollected/unused date change is permitted once under the official conditions; unused refunds deduct JPY 440. No refund applies after use starts. Flight delays do not automatically move a reserved seat. Check date, use and change rules with the issuer; my route is a separate seller/product with separate terms.

Last Kokura buses and last Mojiko trains are separate

The 29 March–24 October 2026 airport-departure table is common to weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. ‘24:00’ means midnight at the start of the next day.

  • First bus 05:45: direct → north exit 06:18 → bus centre 06:25.
  • Last direct 22:35: north exit 23:11 → bus centre 23:18.
  • Via Nakatani 23:05: Heiwadori 23:57 → bus centre 24:00.
  • Via Nakatani 23:35: Heiwadori next day 00:27 → ‘小倉駅前’ 00:30; no bus-centre stop.
  • Overall last bus 24:00: airport next day 00:00 → Heiwadori 00:52 → ‘小倉駅前’ 00:55; neither direct nor north-exit service.

The fixed table does not promise that all buses wait for international processing. Check today's operation and ask the operator about the actual last departure if your flight is delayed. Domestic flight examples do not include international immigration time.

The last JR trains to Mojiko

Tables checked for 5 October (Monday) and 10 October (Saturday) show local 144M at next-day 00:31 → 00:45, followed by Relay Kamome 66 at 00:39 → 00:52. The limited express needs an extra ticket beyond JPY 340; check the selected seat's charge. Use the timetable's operating date, not just the clock after midnight.

The airport 23:35 bus reaches the street stop at 00:30, leaving one minute to the local and nine to the limited express. Collecting bags, walking to the station, gates/platform and possible delays make these unreliable connections. The 24:00 bus reaches Kokura at 00:55, after both. For Mojiko hotels, choose an earlier airport bus or a confirmed car.

The terminal lists 05:15 opening and 24:05 closing, subject to flight/bus changes. Around-the-clock airport operations do not establish all-night terminal access, buses or overnight stays. Confirm late check-in and save directions to the actual hotel entrance; indoor passages may close.

After the last bus: taxis, booked cars or nearby accommodation

Follow 1F taxi signs to the official rank. Airport examples list Kokura about 25 km/45 minutes/JPY 8,500 and Mojiko about 37 km/45 minutes/JPY 12,000. These include tolls but exclude night surcharge. The displayed fare table revised 22 July 2025 adds 20% from 22:00–05:00. Address, waiting, vehicle and road conditions change the actual fare; these are not guaranteed fixed prices. Ask about dispatch if no vehicle waits.

The airport also links NearMe and booked fixed/shared taxis. In the official NearMe booking, select Kitakyushu Airport, date/time, address, passengers and bags, then confirm availability and booking. Check the selected product's cutoff, pickup, delay waiting, changes, cancellation and luggage terms. An enquiry is not a confirmed booking; a Fukuoka Airport transfer is a different product.

Rental companies list different hours, including 08:00–20:00, 08:00–19:30, 09:00–20:00 or 09:00–19:00. Do not assume midnight collection. Confirm Japan-valid driving documents, insurance/extras, collection/return and delay cutoffs. If transport ends, check actual nearby room availability, late check-in and a confirmed shuttle or ride; do not rely on a terminal overnight stay.

Check flights, buses and JR separately

Use airport flights and airline alerts, airport transport status, Nishitetsu notices and JR Kyushu Fukuoka/Kitakyushu status. A flight delay does not establish that all transport is suspended; one suspension does not guarantee another option. Notify booked pickup/rental operators promptly about delays and confirm changes/cancellation.

Official tickets and booking links

The direct bus ticket and limited-express combination via Kusami use different routes. Check cars and rentals for your date and actual hotel address.

These are official links, not affiliate offers. Affiliate links elsewhere on the site are disclosed separately. No unverified rail pass or Fukuoka Airport pickup is substituted for this journey.

Kitakyushu Airport transport FAQ

How do I get to Kokura Station from Kitakyushu Airport?

Take the Nishitetsu Kokura bus from stop 1 outside 1F arrivals. Adults pay JPY 710. Direct buses take about 33–36 minutes to the north Shinkansen Exit or 40–43 to the south bus centre. Via Nakatani, allow about 55 minutes to the bus centre; it does not serve the north exit. Add arrivals and waiting.

Do I need to book the airport bus?

No seat reservation is accepted. Use cash, supported IC/contactless payment or the official non-reserved web ticket. A web ticket does not secure a seat or departure; check the next service if full.

How are direct and Nakatani buses different?

Direct buses serve the Shinkansen Exit and bus centre. Nakatani buses serve city stops including Tokuriki, Moritsune, Mihagino and Heiwadori, without the north exit. Airport departures at 23:35 and 24:00 use Kokura-Ekimae instead of the bus centre.

Which side of Kokura Station should I use?

The Shinkansen Exit is north. For south-side hotels, cross via the 2F public passage using stairs/lifts, or stay on to the bus centre. Late Kokura-Ekimae and the bus centre are different stops.

How do I pay the bus fare?

Pay when getting off, according to airport guidance. Kokura supports cash, listed IC such as nimoca/Suica/PASMO and listed contactless bank cards. Tap the same card/device on boarding and exit. JPY 5,000/10,000 notes cannot be exchanged onboard.

Can I bring a large suitcase?

Highway-style buses use a hold as directed; keep valuables and fragile items with you. Nishitetsu restricts over 30 kg total per person or 2 m combined dimensions. The ordinary Kusami bus does not guarantee the same hold. Ask beforehand about multiple bags, and keep aisles/exits clear.

How do I reach Kokura Castle and Tanga Market?

For the castle, compare the south bus-centre arrival and walk towards the Murasaki River/Riverwalk. For Tanga, walk south via Uomachi from the station, or use Heiwadori on a Nakatani bus. The market is under redevelopment; follow current shop/access signs outside construction areas.

How do I get from the airport to Mojiko?

Take the JPY 710 Kokura bus, then a Kagoshima Main Line local train towards Mojiko. JR costs JPY 340 for about 14–15 minutes, totalling JPY 1,050. Moji and Mojiko are different stations; continue to the Mojiko terminus. Add station walking and waiting.

What if my delayed flight makes me miss the last bus?

The current Kokura table ends at airport 24:00, meaning next-day midnight. Allow arrivals and walking to the stop; buses are not guaranteed to wait for all delayed passengers. After the last service, contact official taxis, a confirmed booked car or nearby accommodation, and notify your hotel.

Does late airport operation mean buses run all night?

No. Terminal hours are listed as 05:15–24:05, subject to flight/bus changes. The first Kokura bus is 05:45 and last 24:00. Around-the-clock flight operations do not guarantee all-night buses, terminal access or overnight stays.

Where do I check today’s transport?

Use the airport/airline for flights, Nishitetsu and airport transport notices for buses, and JR Kyushu Fukuoka/Kitakyushu status for trains. Wind, typhoon or rain forecasts alone do not establish cancellation of every service. Check alternatives separately.
