Admission

Individual admission is ¥800 for adults, ¥400 for junior high and high school students, and ¥300 for elementary school students; younger children enter free. Adult admission including Ninomaru Palace is ¥1,300. Adult Honmaru Palace admission is ¥1,000, purchased separately from castle admission with an advance reservation. The exhibition gallery also costs extra.

Nijo Castle opens 8:45 AM–5:00 PM, with admission until 4:00 PM. Ninomaru Palace reception runs 8:45 AM–4:10 PM; Honmaru Palace reception runs 9:30 AM–4:00 PM.

How to get to Nijo-jo Castle

From Kyoto Station, take the Karasuma subway line and transfer to the Tozai Line at Karasuma Oike. Get off at Nijojo-mae and leave through Exit 1. Walk toward Nijo Castle and buy tickets beside the East Gate. Check trains and fares separately for your visit date.

Enter the castle before the palace reception cutoff

Ninomaru Palace reception ends at 4:10 PM, but you must enter the castle by 4:00 PM. Do not plan your arrival around the later palace cutoff alone.

Nijo Castle hours and closures

The castle and individual palaces have different closure days

Nijo Castle closes December 29–31. Ninomaru Palace closes on Tuesdays in January, July, August, and December, or the following day if Tuesday is a public holiday. It also closes December 26–January 3. Honmaru Palace closes on the third Monday of each month and the following day, unless those dates are public holidays. Honmaru also closes December 26–January 3.

You cannot see Ninomaru Palace's interior on its closure days. Check which areas are open before buying the appropriate ticket.

Questions about Nijo-jo Castle

Does the Ninomaru Palace ticket also include Honmaru Palace?

Honmaru Palace needs a separate ticket and an advance date-and-time reservation. The Ninomaru Palace-inclusive ticket does not admit you to Honmaru.
