Tottori travel: start with the dunes or Yonago?

Stay near Tottori Station for the dunes and Sand Museum, or near Yonago Station for a trip to Sakaiminato to see Shigeru Mizuki's work. Kurayoshi lies between the two areas, but its station is separate from the white-walled warehouse district, so allow for a local bus.

Choose the Tottori attractions you want to see

The dunes and Sand Museum are in eastern Tottori city; the white-walled warehouses and Utsubuki Park are in central Kurayoshi; the yokai street and Yonago Castle Ruins are in the west. Decide whether to combine the outdoor dunes walk and exhibition in one day or split them across two.

Itineraries by trip length

Choose a focus on the dunes and Sand Museum or a trip as far as Kurayoshi's historic streets. To add Sakaiminato's yokai street and Yonago Castle Ruins, see the itineraries that move your overnight base west. Also check the departure station on your final sightseeing day.

2 days, 1 night

Stay one night near Tottori Station for the dunes, Sand Museum, and Tottori Castle Ruins, or near Yonago Station for the yokai street and Yonago Castle Ruins. JR travel between the stations takes time, with another bus or train needed for the dunes or Sakaiminato. On a two-day trip, choose one side to leave more time for sightseeing.

3 days, 2 nights

Stay two nights in Tottori to give the dunes walk, Sand Museum, and city castle ruins a day each. Alternatively, combine the dunes and exhibition on day one, then change hotels to Kurayoshi for the warehouse district and Utsubuki Park. The single-base itinerary ends at Tottori Station; the hotel-change itinerary ends at Kurayoshi Station.

4 days, 3 nights

Move west with one night each in Tottori, Kurayoshi, and Yonago, or split eastern dunes and castle visits from central walks with two nights in Tottori and one in Kurayoshi. Sakaiminato is a day trip from your Yonago hotel. On hotel-change days, choose the JR train to the next overnight city first, then check the local trip to the sights and back to that night's lodging.

5 days, 4 nights

For the yokai street sculptures and Yonago Castle Ruins, move west with two nights in Tottori, one in Kurayoshi, and one in Yonago. For more time at Tottori Castle Ruins and Utsubuki Park, choose three nights in Tottori and one in Kurayoshi. The eastern/central itinerary does not add a Yonago round trip to its costs.

Where should I stay?

Overnight bases and sightseeing areas

Tottori city is in the east, Kurayoshi in the center, and Yonago and Sakaiminato in the west. Combining the dunes and Sakaiminato in one day on a short trip leaves much of the day for travel between stations. Start with the side where you arrive.

Choose your accommodation and arrival/departure stations

Stay near Tottori Station for the dunes, Hakuto Shrine, and Tottori Castle Ruins; near Kurayoshi Station for the warehouse district and Utsubuki Park; or near Yonago Station for Sakaiminato and Yonago Castle Ruins. Itineraries that change cities end at the station of the final overnight base. Add a separate JR journey if you need to return to your arrival station.

Compare the Tottori-Matsue Pass with individual tickets

The adult Tottori-Matsue Pass costs ¥4,000 for three consecutive days. It covers the JR sections between Tottori, Kurayoshi, and Yonago and the Sakai Line shown on the official map. Distinguish the Loop Kirinjishi and Matsue Lake Line buses listed in official guidance. This guide does not count Route 39 to the dunes, Kurayoshi Routes 11 and 12, or Kururi buses as included in that pass.

For the westbound three-night A and four-night A itineraries, JR base fares total ¥2,330: Tottori–Kurayoshi ¥680, Kurayoshi–Yonago ¥990, and a Sakai Line round trip ¥660. Individual tickets cost less than the pass if you only take ordinary trains on these sections. With limited expresses or additional travel, compare the actual routes, seats, and dates again.

Eligibility requires a non-Japanese passport and Temporary Visitor status. Reserved seats require advance reservations. The pass does not cover the entire five-day itinerary or bundle admission, lodging, and meals. Check trains for your travel dates before choosing its start date.
