Five days in Akita: harbour views or more time in Kakunodate?

To include harbour views, stay two nights in Akita for separate park and Selion days before moving to Kakunodate. With four nights in Kakunodate, you can visit the samurai houses, craft exhibits and lake on separate days. Neither plan includes a long sightseeing journey on the final day; the Kakunodate-only stay adds no sightseeing before departure.

Five days: harbour and lake on separate days

For harbour views, samurai residences and lake scenery, stay two nights in Akita followed by two in Kakunodate. See the park and Selion on separate days before changing accommodation, avoiding an immediate long-distance train connection after the harbour visit.

Day 1 · Senshu Park

Spend two nights in Akita and two in Kakunodate. Start with a park walk on arrival day, visiting harbour and lake on different days.

  1. Akita Station or accommodation → Walk to Senshu Park

Walk from Akita Station towards Senshu Park. It is about five minutes to Pocket Park or 15 to the Ninomaru site; choose a moat-side walk or continue uphill.

    Akita City park guide

  2. Senshu Park → Moat and Ninomaru walk

Walk around the moat in the afternoon and continue to Ninomaru if the slopes are manageable. Osumiyagura interior visits need a separate operating check and are excluded from basic costs. Afterwards, return towards the station for dinner and rest at your booked accommodation.

    Akita City park guide

For a late arrival, take a short moat-side walk before dinner.

Day 2 · Selion observation deck

Visit Selion while keeping the same Akita accommodation. Return to the city for dinner and a rest instead of connecting straight to a long-distance train.

  1. Akita Station West Exit stop 4 → Selion bus stop

Take a Selion-bound bus from stop 4 at Akita Station’s west-side bus terminal and alight at Selion. The adult fare is JPY 550 each way. Plan time at the harbour around your bus back to Akita Station.

  2. Arrive at Selion → Observation deck and lunch timing

Enter Port Tower’s front entrance and see the harbour and sea from the free observation deck on Level 5. Hours are 09:00–21:00. For lunch at the harbour, check restaurant hours and time before your return bus.

  3. Selion → Akita Station or accommodation

Take the bus from Selion to Akita Station’s West Exit. Eat near the station and rest at the same accommodation. You are staying another night in Akita, so there is no immediate onward train to another city.

Choose your return bus first. If there is too little time for harbour lunch, eat back near Akita Station.

Day 3 · Move to Kakunodate and visit Aoyagi House

Finish your Akita stay, move to Kakunodate and visit Aoyagi House. Leave Kawarada for the final day.

  1. Akita Station → Board the Akita Shinkansen towards Morioka

Take the Akita Shinkansen from Akita towards Morioka to Kakunodate. Reserve seats on a train stopping there. The section is covered by the JR EAST PASS; ordinary tickets can also be used. Check your journey falls within the pass’s consecutive validity period. Lake buses, Selion buses and accommodation are extra.
